**Don't Forget to Rate, Comment, and Subscribe!!!** We are testing the lethality of the .22LR @ 300 Yards...The reason I'm performing this test is because in the past I've had many people down play the lethality of the .22LR at any ranges. This test will help us better understand the capabilities of this little round. TEST: The test here consists of a 4-5" thick piece of chuck roast and 8 layers of denim (4 in front 4 in back). The .22LR round that we are using is the CCI Velocitor GDHP. This round is moving about 1400 FPS out of the muzzle. @ 300 yards this 40 grain bullet is moving about 825 FPS with about 60 ft/lbs of energy. Your standard velocity .22LR is moving about 1050 FPS and has about 100 ft/lbs. So this is both representative of the Velocitor's capability at range but also a closer shot with a more standard velocity ammo. RESULTS: We had two center of mass hits at 300 Yards...one of these penetrated completely through the denim and roast, the other penetrated through 4 layers of denim and the entire roast, but came to a stop on the other side under the rear denim, highly expanded. Both rounds (comparing the wound channel) were expanded. DISCUSSION: After reviewing the results I feel there is no doubt that the .22LR (specifically the CCI Velocitor is lethal at extended ranges. I can speculate that if this test were performed with solid lead nose or FMJ ammo the penetration would probably be even greater due to the lack of expansion (and the braking effect that <b>...</b>

I use a whole hog heart, inside Homemade Ballistics Gel for this test. Standard Testing uses 4 layers of Denim on the front of the ballistics gelatin. Denim is used to see if the hollow point round will be effected by material clogging the cavity of the hollow point, thus preventing expansion of the round. The PDX1 hollow point rounds however, are well known for continuous expansion even through denim and other material, so I didn't find it necessary to use any denim in this test. Also, Keep in mind that there is no bone to inhibit the hollow point either, because once again, I wanted to see the Direct Impact of the round on the heart. How many videos of ballistic testing with a form of ballistic gel do you see on YouTube? There aren't many, in comparison to all the ammo testing videos that have been posted in all formats. I am willing to make an effort to change that scenario. Introduction, overview, and ammo test of SIM-TEST Ballistic Test Media, a format very similar to ballistic gel. After posting over three dozen ammo tests videos using wetpack (May 2009 - December 2010), I felt the need to make a change. More info on this product manufactured and distributed by Corbin, located in Oregon, USA. If interested, you must order direct. www.corbins.com Wetpack is a very inexpensive media for ammo testing, but it was time-consuming using my format. In the past, I would stuff one gallon jugs with wet newspaper, then cover the first jug with four layers of denim. The process of making five jugs for each test required 2 1/2 hours of spare time. It was not possible to view an accurate "wound channel" with this format, and wetpack is not generally viewed as a reliable testing medium by some people....even though folks have been using it for decades. This format requires more of a financial investment, but the process is more scientific and should yield good representative results. An overview of the ammo testing process that was deployed during my first year on TNOUTDOORS9. Hopefully, this will answer some questions regarding the testing format and protocol moving forward. The recipe and process for making the ballistic test jugs is included below in the description. With regard to your own testing, if you do not have access to a safe, spacious location for target shooting, please do not try this. Managed ranges certainly are not the place. There are tons of resources online to properly research your ammo selection. My tests are not definitive, only a representation, and possibly a basis for comparison. Folks usually perform extensive research when buying a TV, computer, car, house firearm, etc.. Why would you forego fully researching an ammunition selection that might be needed to safe your life? Pursue all available resources; ammo company web sites, videos, photos, gun forums, and law enforcement tests. MAKING THE BALLISTIC TEST JUGS Setup 5 half-empty one gallon jugs. Using a single 4-page section of newspaper, start stuffing into the jug one page/section at a time. If you roll it lengthwise, it goes faster and easier. I do not use ad slicks or heavy newsprint. I use a blunt stick or something similar to push the paper all the way down, compressing during the entire process to give a good pack and eliminate air bubbles. Be certain to fill any water gaps that are likely to occur near where the handle is molded into the jug. Add water as needed <b>...</b>

Stinger: 32gr Bullet 1640 FPS Velocitor 40gr Bullet 1435 FPS The Velocitor has a 20% heavier bullet and is 12.5% slower then the Stinger. What the extra MASS will give you is better longer range ballistic, better terminal ballistics (as penetration goes). It is still considered a hypervelocity ammo. The Stinger will expanded in tissue faster and more violently, but will not penetrate as far as the Velocitor. When we are talking a light slower bullet like the .22LR I'd rather have as much penetration as possible. What will stop an intruder or offender: 1. Disruption of the central nervous system which includes the Brain, Brain Stem, and Spinal Cord. 2. Disruption of the hearts ability to pump blood by either damage to the heart itself or hypovolemic shock (blood loss). 3. Disruption of the bodies ability to oxygenate the blood by damage to the Lungs. 4. Disruption to the Musculoskeletal system. A somewhat unscientific ballistic gelatin test that incorporates fabric and raw pork ribs. The test ammo was Winchester PDX1 95gr 380 acp bonded JHP's and the Federal HST in 165gr 40S&W. The test weapons were a Ruger LCP (380) and a Sig Sauer P229R (40S&W). Distance was approximately 20 feet. The bullets were fired through 2 layers of damp 100% cotton and about 1 inch of wild hog spare ribs and then into 12 inches of ballistic gelatin. I put the bullets on a different scale afterwards. Sorry mine crapped out. The PDX1 380 came in at 6.09 grams averaged. (one shot @ 6.07g and one @ 6.11g) The factory spec is 6.17grams. That's 98.7% weight retention for the PDX1. The HST came in at 10.66 grams. The factory spec is 10.69grams. That's 99.7% weight retention for the HST. Pretty good. Thanks for watching my first YouTube video.

In this segment, I demonstrate a process for diluting the original SIM-TEST media in an attempt for the results to more closely resemble those in calibrated ballistic gel. The original SIM-TEST blocks are melted with various percentages of water added to lessen the density. "Calibration" is tested with .177 BB's at approximately 600 fps, followed by a 9mm +P Speer Gold Dot 124 gr with a "soft objective" of 14" as my penetration target. In formal professional testing, this cartridge typically penetrates 14" in calibrated gel, without denim or other barriers. The Chapter 1 video posted on 2-11-2011 provides more insight into the basic process and my transition from wetpack for ammo testing. This process was a delicate balance in trying to achieve a representation in the range of ballistic gel performance, without too much alteration of SIM-TEST's base composition. The dilution factor noted at the conclusion of the video will be my standard moving forward; with the option to make adjustments as deemed necessary.
