Obama on Landmark Housing Settlement with Banks

US Attorney General Eric Holder, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and Colorado Attorney General John W. Suthers announced today that the federal government and 49 state attorneys general have reached a landmark $25 billion agreement with the nation?s five largest mortgage servicers to address mortgage loan servicing and foreclosure abuses. The agreement provides substantial financial relief to homeowners and establishes significant new homeowner protections for the future. The unprecedented joint agreement is the largest federal-state civil settlement ever obtained and is the result of extensive investigations by federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, HUD and the HUD Office of the Inspector General (HUD-OIG), and state attorneys general and state banking regulators across the country. The joint federal-state group entered into the agreement with the nation?s five largest mortgage servicers: Bank of America Corporation, JPMorgan Chase Co., Wells Fargo Company, Citigroup Inc. and Ally Financial Inc. (formerly GMAC). About the agreement President Obama said "We have reached a landmark settlement with the nation?s largest banks that will speed relief to the hardest-hit homeowners, end some of the most abusive practices of the mortgage industry, and begin to turn the page on an era of recklessness that has left so much damage in its wake."

Web Extra: Interview w/Naked Capitalism's Yves Smith on Mortgage Settlement and Bank Hostage Crisis

Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Last month's proposed $25 billion mortgage settlement involving 49 states along with Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Ally Financial is a step closer to being official, reports Reuters, as Federal representatives ask a judge to approve it. Supporters claim this deal attempts to prevent the mortgage crisis from happening again, with banks agreeing to revamp loan modification procedures and abandon abusive practices such as robo-signing. But critics argue this is a case of a trend we've seen far too many times before: a settlement that's a good deal for the banks, where they admit no guilt, but a lousy deal for homeowners. Yves Smith is author of the popular blog Naked Capitalism and the book Econned. She's a critic and has followed this deal closely throughout the entire process and breaks down why this is the case and how this deal ended up with "a lot of garbage in it." Smith says banks are paying much less than $25 billion, there is no element of damages or notion of punishment, and the cash payments for people who lost their homes wrongfully is so trivial it's insulting.

50-State, $25B Mortgage Settlement: Relief for Struggling Homeowners or Bailout for Banks?

democracynow.org - The US Justice Department has unveiled a record mortgage settlement with the nation's five largest banks to resolve claims over faulty foreclosures and mortgage practices that have indebted and displaced homeowners and sunk the nation's economy. While the deal is being described as a $25 billion settlement, the banks will only have to pay out a total of $5 billion in cash between them. We speak to one of the settlement's most prominent critics, Yves Smith, a longtime financial analyst who runs the popular finance website, "Naked Capitalism." "The settlement, on the surface, does look like it is helping homeowners," Smith says. "But in fact, the bigger part that most people don't recognize is the way it actually helps the banks with mortgages on their own books. ... The real problem is that this deal is just not going to give that much relief." Look at Pelosi and Reid bith got big money from "healthcare industry" which is 99% health insurance companies that's why we have the mis-named "Affordable Care Act" or Obamacare which is a bailout of insurance companies which are wedded to the banks and deep in the fraud of derivatives and the mortgage fiasco. Papantonio: The Truth About the Mortgage Fraud Settlement

Recently, the federal government announced that they had reached a $25 billion dollar settlement with the nation's biggest banks to repay the victims of the mortgage industry's greed and corruption. These banks have swindled millions of Americans out of their homes, and until recently, had received little more than a slap on the wrist from federal regulators and investigators. But this new settlement isn't the cure-all for mortgage fraud, and Mike Papantonio spoke with attorney Peter Mougey recently about what this settlement actually means for the homeowners who were taken advantage of by our country's biggest banks.

Palestinians accuse Israeli settlers for eating up lands

Palestinians in the West Bank stand by and watch as Jewish settlers continue to claim land rights and demolish their property, leaving some homeless and without better prospects and diminishing chances of peace between both sides. Palestinians say the land is privately owned but Israeli settlement plans have exposed the deep division between the two sides. The community of Bani Nuaim which houses around 30 families is serene and families continue to go on with their everyday lives. Palestinians say this land was theirs and has been taken from them illegally. "Each morning when I come to this place, really I start crying. It's my land for many many years and that I know of my family owned this land maybe three or four hundred years ago. And suddenly, almost twenty years ago now, we can't even get close to the land," said Harbi Ibrahim Mustafa Hasan, one of the land owners. Hasan, along with other private owners like him, took their case to Israel's High Court. A ruling in their favor called for the settlers to vacate by May 1 and their homes to be destroyed -- but the settlers appealed. "Demolishing the homes is not justice. If justice were to be done, then the Supreme court will wait until the case finishes in the district court and the case is decided based on proof and evidence and not on hearsay," said Judy Simon, settler. According to analysts the Israeli government is pressuring the court into stalling the case so that new laws can be formulated to enable the ...

Protest against the occupation, Nabi Saleh, West Bank, 20.1.2012

January 20, 2012 Six weeks since Mustafa Tamimi was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier, Nabi Saleh village held its weekly demonstration in Mustafa's memory. This week protesters marched towards the village's hilltops, overlooking the spring taken by Halamish settlers. Once on the first hilltop, tear gas canisters were shot at the peaceful procession. Since the wind carried the gas back to the soldiers, protesters kept marching on the hilltops, until they were close to the other Palestinian village that Halamish settlement has grabbed land from - Deir Nidham. At this stage Israeli soldiers already managed to climb up the next hilltop. They then shot tear gas canisters directly at protesters. A medic was hit in the thigh by two consecutive tear gas canisters. His friends rushed to help him keep up with the procession, which was going back to the village. Even then, Israeli soldiers kept shooting tear gas at the protesters. Tear gas was also shot in the village's populated areas at times during the demo, and at one time soldiers entered the village's street and kept shooting at protesters and houses. Later on some youths threw stones there to ward off this incursion. As is traditionally the case in Nabi Saleh, the demonstration kept for a few hours. The Israeli forces used the "skunk" foul-water cannon, tear gas machine that shots dozens of canisters at once and rubber-coated steel bullets. Is the $7.8 Billion BP Oil Spill Settlement a Bad Deal For Gulf Residents and Businesses?

democracynow.org - Investigative journalists Greg Palast and Antonia Juhasz examine who wins and who loses in BP's settlement. "[BP's] basically being told, like a bank robber -- you put the money back and everything will be forgiven," says Palast, who also investigated the Exxon Valdez settlement. Meanwhile, state and federal governments are still pursuing separate civil claims against BP for environmental damage. "That's when we're going to hopefully uncover those 72-million pages of investigation that will include wrong doing not just by BP, not just by Transocean, not just by Halliburton, but by every major oil company involved offshore, and very likely based on my research, wrongdoing by the Obama administration," says Juhasz. "It is a desire to keep that out of the public that has pushed the settlement process forward." We also speak with Florida State University Oceanography Professor Ian MacDonald about what it means to restore the Gulf of Mexico. In the wake of the oil spill, BP pledged up to $500 million over a decade to conduct independent scientific research on the environmental effects. But MacDonald notes that, "When the oil was gushing, there were literally hundreds of ships ... studying this disaster. Now as we try to learn what happened, and prepare ourselves for the next catastrophe, we have nothing like those kinds of resources present."
