Battlefields: "Fall of France" 2 of 12

At dawn on Friday, 10 May 1940, Adolf Hitler plunged his bloody fists into the Low Countries and headed for France; at 5:00 PM that same evening, Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Great Britain. The new Prime Minister felt confident of victory then, but the French high command had made a grave miscalculation. Believing that the enemy would be coming through Belgium, as in 1914, the sixty-seven-year-old generalissimo Maurice Gamelin had sent the flower of the French troops and the entire British army?the British Expeditionary Force, or BEF into Flanders. Instead, Nazi tanks struck through Ardennes Forest and crossed the Meuse. When the French defenders panicked, the panzers rolled up the entire Allied line all the way to the sea, trapping the Allies' force. On the fifth day of the enemy offensive, the extent of the disaster began to emerge. Paul Reynaud, the French Premier, wired Churchill: "The German army has broken through our fortified lines south of Sedan." He then asked for ten more Royal Air Force squadrons "immediately." The Prime Minister sent four squadrons, then decided it was "imperative to go to Paris." At 3:00 PM on May 16th, he took off in an unarmed Flamingo, a civilian passenger plane, accompanied by Generals Hastings Ismay and Sir John Dill and his bodyguard Walter Thompson, an inspector from Scotland Yard. Over the French coast Churchill peered down, and Thompson saw his face go grey. He was looking, for the first time, at the war's refugees ...

Sear Bliss - Eternal Battlefields

Sear Bliss - Eternal Battlefields from the "Forsaken Symphony" album. Lyrics: On the battlefield The carnage is done Heroes, broken and dead Lying in the mud But I look up to the sky Ready not to die The sky above me is gray My blade is drawn It's getting dark I see the shades of my enemies They gather by the thousands Darkness encircles us all My sword is drawn For the very last time They're sharpening their claws Screams and thunder Their claws ripping my flesh It is the greatest day As I won't retreat or surrender My body falls to the ground Their teeth tear my flesh Eyes, burning with madness Teeth bloody, I've heard The crunching of my bones I die! Enshrouded in fog I'm marching With great warriors of past Among the slain I wander I look up to the sky Filled with stars I became one with them

Almost immediately after invading Poland, Stalin began placing territorial demands on the Finish government. The Soviet Union demanded a 25 miles of land North of Leningrad and demanded a 30 year lease of the Hanko Peninsula area for a new Soviet naval base. Soviet leaders considered these as more than reasonable. The Finish government rejected the terms and began mobilizing. After an alleged shelling of a border town the Soviet Union invaded Finland on November 30th, 1939. The USSR forces consisted of 23 divisions amounting to 450000 men. The Finish defense consisted of 8 divisions amounting to 180000 men. The main finish defense line (Mannerheim Line) was located 25 miles North of Leningrad. The Finns relied on hit and run tactics in freezing conditions. The Finnish assault troops could outmaneuver the Soviets with ski troops. Much food and ammunition was captured to maintain the Finnish forces. Fortunately, the Finns used the same rifle ammo as the USSR. A crude but highly effective gasoline bomb, developed in the Spanish Civil War, was deployed and destroyed up to 2000 Soviet tanks.
