Our name, Beat Down Boogie, came from a feature film script that we pitched to some film industry folks in 2009. The video above was a rough concept piece to show the humor and action style. In the end we had to make too many compromises in order to get the budget for the film. We decided to save the script for a day when we could make it the way it's supposed to be. Hopefully we will get the chance some day! We got a visit from stuntmen Eric, Manny and Shawn to discuss the film. While they were here we filmed a couple impromptu practice sessions. Learn to make breakaway dinner plates for fight scenes using plaster of paris. It's pretty safe, but try it at your own risk. Basically all you have to do is mix 1 part water with 2 parts plaster of paris and poor the mixture into a plastic mold (like a tray or large bowl). Then wait til it dries. Thanks for watching! It's hard work, but we keep it fun. We'll have some new outtakes and bloopers up soon! PS. The adhesive I'm using is called Sculpt-or-Coat and it's made in Winston Salem here in NC. Usually we have a 3-man crew (with the lead actors helping out as well), but for more ambitious scenes we get a couple more volunteers. When we started out, the only real gear we had were the monopods, tripods, and Rick's SmallHD monitor. But a few equipment companies (CMR Blackbird, Kessler Crane, CPM, Sigma & Ehobbyasia) admired our effort and passion and reached out to help us make MWGS Parts 3, 4 , and 5 really special. DJ Scott La Rock was murdered on August 27, 1987, months after the release of BDP's debut album Criminal Minded. The name of the group, Boogie Down, derives from a nickname for The cultural South Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City. The group pioneered the fusion of dancehall reggae and hip hop music and their debut LP Criminal Minded contained frank descriptions of life in the South Bronx of the late 1980s thus setting the stage for what would eventually become gangsta rap. Boogie Down Production's D-Nice also discovered the white rapper and current rocker Kid Rock in 1987 and helped him get a deal with Jive Records in 1988. While the origins of hip-hop are believed to be from The Bronx, rival hip-hop group Juice Crew's lyrics were misunderstood to contain a claim in the song The Bridge that hip hop was directly a result of artists originating from Queensbridge. Boogie Down and KRS retorted angrily with songs like The Bridge is Over and South Bronx, which started one of the first notable hip hop wars as MC Shan, Marley Marl and Roxanne Shanté all released songs featuring verses personally attacking KRS and Scott La Rock.
