Police violence at Occupy Berkeley - Dec 22, 2011

After the first police attack near the truck, the second wave of police brutality begins at around 4:10. BACKGROUND: After serving Occupy Berkeley with an eviction notice, on 12/21 and the early morning of 12/22, Berkeley police began making quick incursions into the Occupy Berkeley camp to steal as many tents and belongings as possible before being repelled by occupants. At around 2AM on 12/22, a public works truck filled with the campers' stolen gear pulled up across the street from the camp, near a dumpster. It appeared the belongings were to be thrown in the dumpster. The video begins as individuals are attempting to reclaim their stolen property and are promptly attacked by the police. (The police station is across the street from the camp.)

Police Brutality hits UC Berkeley: Eyewitness account

Yesterday at the University of California -- Berkeley, 39 people were arrested including an English professor. The arrest came after approximately one-thousand protesters came together to rally against tuition increases and public education funding cuts. In an attempt to break up the protesters, police used their batons to hit non-violent participants in the ribs and elsewhere. Eric Uribe, a student protester, tells us what it was like on the frontlines of police brutality. He was just one of the victims of yesterday's assault. Follow Liz on Twitter at twitter.com

Berkeley Police improper display of "less-lethal" weapons at protesters

On December 22, 2011 Berkeley Police officers began a series of late night raids and provocations on the Berkeley Occupy encampment. One Berkeley officer, Lt. Reece helped to direct operations against the camp. Reese is holding a "less-lethal" munition that we believe has the capacity to shoot either bean bag or "ricochet" rounds. These weapons are intended to scatter a violent crowd. They are not supposed to be fired at waist height or higher. They are not to be fired at close range. They are potentially lethal weapons and this officer 1) aims at protesters at point blank range 2) aims at individuals attempting to document police activity and 3) he improperly displays these munitions repeatedly.

The assembly started on Nov. 9th 2011 from 12:00 PM. The police injured and arrested several students around later afternoon. At night, around 10:00 PM, Alameda police showed up in riot gear and surrounded the Sproul Hall in Berkeley camps. Approximately 40 students were arrested, and many beaten up. The tents were striped away as well. After the second police raid, the students and the police held their own lines.

Police Brutality Occupy Berkeley Protest

Occupy Cal Berkeley Protest - Police Brutality. As the evening wore on, the crowd swelled as protesters debated whether to stay overnight.at least 39 protesters were arrested on Wednesday at the Berkeley campus, the epicenter of the statewide college protests. Another 11 students were arrested at UCLA. The university reported earlier that an administrator had told the protesters they could stay around the clock for a week, but only if they didn't pitch tents or use stoves or other items that would suggest people were sleeping there. The protesters voted not to comply with the demand and to go ahead with setting up a tent site they dubbed "Occupy Cal" to protest financial policies they blame for causing deep cuts in higher education spending.Protesters put up tents in defiance of Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, who on Wednesday said that while the university shares many principles with Occupy activists, they would not be allowed to set up camps on campus or take over any buildings.

Occupy Berkeley: 'Cops hit us with batons in stomachs'

Seven University of California students were arrested and dozens of others suffered bruises and abrasions following a police crackdown on an attempted encampment at a local plaza on Wednesday. "We had the tents set up for about a half an hour when the police decided they wanted to shut down the camp," student protester Eric Uribe recalled in an interview with RT. "What the students did is they set up a human wall around the tents. Soon after that, the police approached with full force in riot gear, with batons. We had no intention to move, but they jabbed some of us repeatedly in the stomach, pulling people onto the floor and arresting them." Hundreds of protesters had gathered at the town's Sproul Plaza to protest against tuition fee increases and public education funding cuts. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Occupy Berkeley - December 22 - Police Aggression & Brutality in 1080 - Engagement 1 of 2

I've been up for 36 hours (I don't do those drugs), but I wanted to get this up before sleep. This is a draft description. Occupy Berkeley & Occupy Oakland protestors ACT as Berkeley Police use the distraction of an Occupier's arrest - parading the man in front of us and into the front door of the police station - to sneak an unmarked pickup truck to the southeast corner of the Occupy Berkeley camp site (The Alamo). Two Berkeley Police officers SNATCHED the two closest tents, like some kind of literal thieves in the night. Occupy Berkeley and Occupy Oakland protestors rush the small group of Berkeley PD officers, assailing them with shouts and chants, which cowed these obviously terrified officers, forcing a total retreat. The swine DID keep the tents, but they put a big dent in their truck driving over other camper's possessions in their haste to vacate the area. The kicker is that the one pig had the nerve to say "You guys are being aggressive towards us." Really dude? Who was the group who STOLE HOMELESS PEOPLES PROPERTY with WEAPONS DRAWN like SNAKES in the grass? I don't seem to remember that description applying to nonviolent protestors. Bite my shiny 1080 metal ass. PS To the MainStream Media guy who said: "No dude, I'm here and covering this.. We're not doing a bad job. The only reason Occupy is so big is because we [the MSM] are giving you such great coverage." (i swear this is true) Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah!! PPS If I got this kind of footage on a DSLR with no ...

Occupy Cal: UC-Berkeley Students Rally for Public Education; Are Attacked by Riot Police

This week the Occupy movement drew thousands of California college students to protest on campuses across the state. The University of California system faces some of the steepest budget cuts and tuition hikes in the nation. Tuition and fees could increase by 81 percent over the next four years. This fall, students saw tuition hikes just a few weeks before their classes began. Community colleges and the California State University system face similar fee hikes. On Wednesday students held protests at least 10 campuses, including UC Irvine, UCLA and UC Berkeley, where police forcibly removed students and arrested 39 people. For more, we turn to a report by KPFA's John Hamilton. [Originally aired on Democracy Now!, 11/11/2011]

Police weaponry brought to University of California at Berkeley protest.

A few brief questions for a police officer in riot gear. Notice someone's rude and unfortunately timed remark towards the police officer. Many of the protesters are non students, and the commenter did not appear to be a student. On closer inspection the gun seemed to carry .45 caliber or so sized rounds which had a plastic or painted coating on the exterior. They were in a round drum somewhat resembling an antique style "tommy gun". A bystander who was present mentioned that earlier the officer had stated that they were plastic bullets. To my knowledge the gun was not fired on November 9, 2011. If anyone has any further information on the type of injuries that this weapon might cause please post this in the comments.

911 caller dies while cops work on occupy movement

BERKELEY (KCBS) — Berkeley Police acknowledge they didn't immediately respond to a call in the hills that would eventually result in a homicide this past Saturday. Officers were preparing for an Occupy protest headed to UC Berkeley from Oakland and said it didn't appear to be an emergency. Neighbors in the area of Grizzly Peak Blvd. and Park Gate Road said that the police response to the call was slow. KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports: Berkeley Police Admit No Immediate Response To Eventual Homicide Police issued a statement Monday night that said the initial call was for trespassing and that because on-duty officers were being reconfigured for the protest; only emergency calls were to be handled. Police said they did immediately responded to a 911 call about an assault in the same area that came later that evening, but it was too late. Peter Cukor, 67, had been beaten to death with a flower pot. The suspect, 23-year-old Daniel Dewitt, was taken into custody and will be arraigned on Wednesday. His mother Candy said it's a tragedy. "Our hearts go out to the other family. It breaks my heart. We've all lost in this," she said. Dewitt was a football player at Alameda High School and his father was the first African-American City Councilman in the Island City.

One officer overheard asking, "Ok, who killed the squirrel?" - Approximately 3PM Feb 11, 2010, I happened upon this scene, three cop cars, three cops, and four 13-16? year old girls (who looked to be on their way home from school) sitting on the curb on the 800 block of Cragmont Ave in North Berkeley. They were kept sitting /standing in the same location for over 1/2 hour or longer. My camera battery quickly ran low. What I didn't get to video: At one point they were lightly frisked by a female officer. The three police cars on the street were impeding normal traffic on this narrow stretch of Cragmont in North Berkeley. Toward the end, one girl looked like she had been singled out and maybe cited. I left before they were either released or arrested.
