Miles Davis "Summertime" (1958)

"Summertime" is a track from the album "Porgy and Bess" by jazz trumpet musician Miles Davis, released in 1958 on Columbia Records. The album features arrangements by Davis and collaborator Gil Evans from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. The album was recorded in four sessions on July 22, July 29, August 4 and August 18 in 1958 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City. It is the second collaboration between Davis and Evans and has garnered much critical acclaim since its release, being acknowledged by music critics as the best of their collaborations. For many jazz critics, Porgy and Bess is regarded as historic. In 1958, Davis was one of many jazz musicians growing dissatisfied with bebop, seeing its increasingly complex chord changes as hindering creativity. Five years earlier, in 1953, pianist George Russell published his Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, which offered an alternative to the practice of improvisation based on chords. Abandoning the traditional major and minor key relationships of Western music, Russell developed a new formulation using scales or a series of scales for improvisations. Russell's approach to improvisation came to be known as modal in jazz. Davis saw Russell's methods of composition as a means of getting away from the dense chord-laden compositions of his time, which Davis had labeled "thick". Modal composition, with its reliance on scales and modes, represented, as Davis put it,[3] "a return to melody". In a ...

Bess of Hardwick Hall

Clips on Elizabeth Cavendish, most commonly known as 'Bess of Hardwick'. She was one of the most remarkable Elizabethans and through her intelligence and ambition she amassed great wealth and helped her family rise to positions of prestige. About her granddaughter Arbella -- Bess married her daughter also called Elizabeth to Charles Stuart, Earl of Lennox who was the youngest son of Margaret Douglas. Margaret's mother was Henry VIII's elder sister and so she was a cousin to Elizabeth I. Margaret's eldest son, Henry Staurt, married Mary Queen of Scots and was the father of Mary's only surviving child, James (who would in 1603 become James I of England). Margaret and Bess arranged the marriage between their children but without Elizabeth I's consent and subsequently both had to answer to the queen when the marriage was discovered. Elizabeth Cavendish and Charles's marriage was short and they both died leaving an infant daughter, Arbella. Arbella had a claim to the throne but it was not as impressive as her cousin James's claim and it is debatable whether Elizabeth I actually considered Arbella at all for the throne. Arbella's own life was quite tragic; she eventually entered a secret marriage during the reign of James I and was subsequently imprisoned in the Tower of London, where she died in 1615. She died without children. There are several noble families today in England that can link their ancestry back to Bess. The Dukedom of Devonshire is still held by the Cavendishs.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Bess, You Is My Daughter Now . Part 1/3

www.youtube.com Mary agrees to take care of Phyllis's precocious daughter for a few days. Voted one of the best TV themes ever .. The Mary Tyler Moore show. After she left a long term relationship, she She ran into an old friend, Phyllis Lindstrom, who was the landlady of a huge house and had signed a year's lease for her to have one of the best apartments in the house. Mary met a woman who lived in the building, Rhoda Morganstern. Mary and Rhoda became best friends, to Phyllis's dismay. She also had a bond with Phyllis's daughter, Bess. Mary applied for a secretarial job at a television station, WJM-TV, the Twin Cities' lowest rated station. She met with news producer Lou Grant, who hated her spunk, but hired her anyway. The secretarial position was filled, so Mary was hired as associate producer, a job for which she was not qualified, and which paid less money than she would have made as a secretary. She quickly became friends with news writer Murray Slaughter, who in time came to adore her. She was even friends with the very vain (and very incompetent) news anchor, Ted Baxter. In fact, Ted got along better with Mary than anyone else in the news room. Mary often was the voice of reason, but that didn't help her whenever she threw parties. Her parties were always unqualified disasters, and were legendary in Minneapolis. After almost four years of living in Phyllis' apartment house, she moved into a new high-rise apartment. While living there, Mary made friends with next ...
