I am not sure if beta fish like currents or not because my fish usually stays to the right of the tank away from the filters current but sometimes it goes in the big plant and just lets the current push it against the (leaves?) putting other fish in with your beta is not always a bad idea they can stand other small fish like tetras. Stay away from putting fish in with betas that are brightly colored, have big wavy fins, or thats another beta even sometimes females. I was too slow to notice the problem and didn't add the medicine fast enough. After that the tank was moved into my bedroom where I made it into a Amazon fish tank. I am still not a pro at fish keeping and am learning more everyday. ☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼ Advice: When buying fish always check if they are healthy. Also look at the Bettas temperament. Here is Culligan, my first betta fish (well, first fish, period). I got him as a gift from my boyfriend about two weeks ago. He was in a tiny cup and I didn't know anything about fish so I went out and got a pretty 1 gallon glass vase and kept him in there for about a week. Then, I read up on bettas and went out and bought him this 5 gallon aquarium. If you are thinking about getting a betta fish or currently own one in a small container (under 1 gallon), please go out and get him a bigger bowl/tank to live in. It's a myth that they prefer to be confined to small environments. I mean, would you want to live out your life in some stupid cup? From what I've read from various betta care sites, 2 gallons is the minimum tank a betta should be kept in. And of course, bigger is better. Remember to watch in high quality. I got this tank one week ago. It's the Eclipse System 12. It's housing my 2nd betta fish, Comrad, and 3 adorable albino cory catfish (Kip, Kanu, & Kitt). It is also home to six fuzzy marimo balls. Funny story about Comrad. I wasn't planning to buy a betta fish when I walked into Walmart to buy an aquarium heater for my new tank. But I saw the bettas sulking and most looked like they were very sick. But not Comrad. He was like an inch larger than the rest of them and I thought I'd save him. Oh, and HE NEVER FLARES. I dont know what his deal is. My other betta Culligan flares all the time but Comrad is very friendly and loves it when the albino cory swims up to him. Update (01/28/09) I've added one spotted cory. He schools w/the albino cory so I don't think he's lonely. Two days ago, added 1 very small (I think its really young) African Dwarf Frog. They're all getting along very well, I'm happy to report.
