Giant Weta - World's Biggest Bug?

BY STEVEN SPARKMAN ANCHOR STEVEN SPARKMAN Photos snapped by a nature lover went viral this weekend. No, it's not a picture of a beach or a sunset. It's something a little more... creepy. WTHR explains. "Here is the world's largest insect. There you go. Now, if you see there, that insect is sitting in the palm of a man's hand, filling his hand, and he's chewing on a carrot there. This is called a giant weta. He has a wingspan of close to seven inches, and this one here was caught on camera by a world-renowned entomologist, Mark Moffet..." Moffett said he spent several nights searching New Zealand's Little Barrier Island before he found the huge bug. He fed it a carrot so it would hold still for picture taking. That's quite a bug lover. Most people who saw the photos probably had the same reaction as Neil Patrick Harris on ABC's LIVE! With Kelly. Kelly Ripa: "That is..." Neil Patrick Harris: "Guh! Oh my god!" Ripa: "It's called a giant weta. WETA. Weta" Harris: "Yeah, if I saw it, I'd be like 'Weta hell?'" Ripa: "That's how it got it's name. 'Weta hell is that?'" Headlines have been calling Moffett's weta the world's biggest insect, at 71 grams and 7 inches long. But is the weta really king? MSNBC's Alan Boyle points out, it depends what you mean by "biggest." "By some accounts, goliath beetles can reach a weight of 100 grams during their larval stage and achieve a wingspan of nearly 10 inches. The White Witch moth, meanwhile, has a wingspan of up to 12 inches, which is ...

The giant weta is a cricket-like creature with a wingspan of close to seven inches. The one in the picture (full image below), isn't just the largest weta, it's the world's largest insect ever photographed. Renowned entomologist Mark Moffett found the amazing bug after two days of searching New Zealand's Little Barrier Island. The species was previously found on the New Zealand mainland, but had been virtually annihilated by rats introduced by Europeans. Moffett, 53, located the weta in a tree and proceeded to feed her a carrot. "She enjoyed the carrot so much she seemed to ignore the fact she was resting on our hands and carried on munching away," Moffett said in a press release. "She would have finished the carrot very quickly, but this is an extremely endangered species and we didn't want to risk indigestion." Moffett, who said the creature weighed about as much as three mice, quickly let go after the photos were taken.
World's biggest insect!

A nature-lover has revealed how he spent two days tracking down a giant insect on a remote New Zealand island -- and got it to eat a carrot out of his hand. Mark Moffett's find is the world's biggest insect in terms of weight, which at 71g is heavier than a sparrow and three times that of a mouse. The 53-year-old former park ranger discovered the giant weta up a tree and his real life Bug's Bunny has now been declared the largest ever found. He came across the cricket-like creature, which has a wing span of seven inches, after two days of searching on a tiny island. The creepy crawly is only found on Little Barrier Island, in New Zealand, although there are 70 other types of smaller weta found throughout the country The giants of the species were wiped off the mainland by rats accidentally introduced by Europeans. After Mark found the female weta he fed it the carrot before putting it back where he found her. Mark, 53, said: 'Three of us walked the trails of this small island for two nights scanning the vegetation for a giant weta. 'We spent many hours with no luck finding any at all, before we saw her up in a tree. 'The giant weta is the largest insect in the world, and this is the biggest one ever found, she weighs the equivalent to three mice. A Giant BEAST! Found on a Hike in Thailand

Bigger than big. I've seen these things often as I climb this mountain, and never thought to try to grab one and put it in the snake bag. I grabbed one today. They are fierce, and nothing to play with. With something this big it's best not to play around. I got the hell out of its way when it went for my gohn (ass in Thai).

Rare Giant Flower Blooms in Japan

It's been 20 years in the making... for one rare flower in Japan brought thousands of people in to one botanical garden to catch a glipse. On Friday, thousands of visitors flocked to a botanical garden in Tokyo to see a rare, giant flower that has bloomed for the first time in two decades. Once in full bloom, the flower emits a smell that resembles rotting meat. The smell attracts insects which pollinate it. "It smelled like some sort of raw garbage that has gone rotten." "Even while I was getting close, the smell was so bad that I couldn't breathe." Some people remembered the last time the same sort of flower bloomed in Tokyo in 1991. "I had seen it on TV. I heard it only blooms for two days and is the largest in the world, so I was really interested. So we left our house at 6:30am and got here around 8:00am." Standing at over five feet tall, the "titan arum" is endangered, and it is native to Indonesia where rainforest habitat on Sumatra is under threat due to deforestation. In the wild, the plant usually blooms once every 16 years. The flower lasts only two days after which the petals close and the central stalk breaks, releasing any pollen-covered insects that may be inside. While the botanical garden normally only sees approximately 100 people on weekends, over 2000 had already visited the park in the period leading up to the flower's blooming.
