Alternative Energy - Biofuel from Algae

Algae is the fastest growing plant life, and as an organism it converts sunlight into oil, scientists theorize that Algal biofuel can produce a whopping 30 times more energy per acre than any other biofuel option. The US Department of Energy has estimated that if Algal Biofuel replaced all conventional fuel in the country, it would require 15000 square miles of land to harvest the algae... which is roughly one seventh of the area that is used to harvest corn in the US every year. And a diverse group of byproducts, such as neutraceuticals and feedstocks for producing plastics, can be created in algal biofuel operations, making the production more cost effective. But before we start celebrating the great biofuel solution we've been looking for, there are a few problems... the biomass for producing a significant amount of algal biofuel just doesn't exist yet. The algae has to be grown from scratch and harvesting it is very expensive at this point in time. The potential of Algal Biofuel is staggering... but the problem is that, as of now, it's all just potential. It might be years before the technology catches up to make producing algal biofuel on a large scale possible... but when that time comes, we might be able to finally celebrate a more efficient, renewable, and environmentally friendly energy source. For more information on this exciting and developing technology, check out AlgalBioMass.Org. I'm Elizabeth Chambers. Check back here for more eco friendly news and tips ...

Richard Branson announces biofuel breakthrough

We are announcing a world-first, low-carbon aviation fuel with half the carbon footprint of the standard, fossil-fuel alternative. The partnership represents a breakthrough in aviation fuel technology that will see waste gases from industrial steel production being captured, fermented and chemically converted for use as a jet fuel. The revolutionary fuel production process recycles waste gases that would otherwise be flared off into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide -- so is the next step forward from our previous biofuels work. We anticipate that within two to three years, Virgin Atlantic will use the new fuel on its routes from Shanghai and Delhi to London Heathrow, as LanzaTech develop facilities in China and India. We also hope that the technology will be retrofitted to UK facilities, as well as other facilities worldwide, enabling us to uplift a significant proportion of low-carbon fuel across the world.

How to Make Algal Biofuel-Part 1:Growing algae at home

QIZHONG LABS presents you with its two-part tutorial on how to make your own algal biofuel. Making biofuel has two steps, growing algae and using algal biomass to produce biofuel. This video will tell you everything you need to know about cultivating your own algae. It is important to grow algae to fix carbon dioxide to reduce the effects of global warming. Scientists have already predicted that extreme weather conditions will persist if action is not taken. In recent years, we have seen record snowfall, deadly tornadoes, heavy flooding, and extreme drought. Everyone is affected by these events, so, it is imperative that everyone does their part in combating global warming. Growing algae is the simplest thing that one can do to fight global warming. If everybody participated in growing algae, millions of tons of carbon dioxide would be removed from the air every year. In addition to reversing the effects of global warming, growing algae also produces a large amount of algal biomass that can be used to make algal biofuel that can replace fossil fuels and improve indoor air quality. This video has everything you need to get started cultivating your own algae and doing your part to fix the climate crisis. Visit us at www.qizhonglabs.com Subscribe for Part 2!

Biofuel is Taking Flight

An increased focus on reducing fossil fuel usage to minimize climate change has propelled aircraft manufacturers to investigate the use of biofuels. Biofuels are providing reasons for the aviation industry to be hopeful, as a means of achieving sustainability. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has recently given the preliminary approval to the blending of 50% biofuels produced from algal, jatropha, municipal waste and other cellulosic feedstocks in aviation fuels. Final approval is expected in July 2011. Lufthansa and Airbus are expected to begin a six-month commercial trial of a 50 percent biofuel blend, on four flights per day operating between Frankfurt and London. Bioenterprise works with a company who produces biofuel from agricultural crop residues and waste, and purpose-grown cellulosic feedstock. With the recent surge of aviation biofuel interest, perhaps there's an opportunity to vertically integrate.

Airlines Consider Using Biofuel

BY: LOGAN TITTLE ANCHOR: JENNIFER MECKLES You're watching multisource tech video news analysis from Newsy. You may want to save those leftovers for something other than tomorrow's lunch. Airline companies are looking at a new form of fuel that could potentially help the environment AND your pocketbook -- food! "We are now going to biofuels of the second generation which means biofuels produced out of algae, out of the sea, out of biomass, out of 200 kinds of nuts... The good news is that it contains about 10 percent more energy so a plane can fly about five to 10 percent further than with ordinary kerosene." (Video source: Bloomberg) Jim Anderson is business director for Honeywell, a technology manufacturing company tasked with testing the biomass fuel. He tells CCTV - serving food for fuel is a much more satisfying method. "Overall it results in between a 60 to 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to flying with traditional fossil fuel." International Business Times says eight US airlines have already planned to negotiate purchasing biomass fuel produced by a company in California. They say, "The plant hopes that by 2015, they will be converting 550000 tons of urban and agricultural waste into 16 million gallons a year of jet fuel." The result? "...jet fuel currently costs $131 per barrel. Biofuel could ultimately cost less than $50 a barrel." CNN estimates some commercial passenger jets will start flying on biofuels within months. Algal Biofuel: A natural energy resource

When most people think about algae, they imagine common seaweed on the beach, or maybe the thin green layer on the surface of their backyard pond. In another ten years, however, we may more commonly think of algae as a source of energy. Bigelow Laboratory, located in Boothbay Harbor, ME, is conducting research on algae as a biofuel resource. This audio story explains the hurdles to be overcome before we see algal biofuel on the market, including the current conflict in the scientific community regarding this research. Biofuel bandits steal fast food grease

Soaring gasoline prices have spawned a new kind of crime in Albuquerque - grease theft, as in restaurant grease. On Monday, Albuquerque police arrested 45 year old Darin Espinosa after watching him pump grease from another company's dumpster into the grease tank on his truck. The episode occurred at Sadie's Restaurant, a popular North Valley eatery featuring New Mexico cuisine. Brian Stafford of Sadie's said the restaurant saves vegetable oil from its fryers to sell to biofuel producers, but this was from the dumpster reserved for animal fats, like grease from hamburger.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack, Senator Klobuchar See Biofuel

Today at Cenex Harvest States headquarters — which is located in Inver Grove, south of Saint Paul — Senator Amy Klobuchar and US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack touted Minnesota's agricultural prowess and its production of biofuels. Governor Mark Dayton was also in attendance. Because corn ethanol acts as a substitute for foreign oil and natural gas, Klobuchar and Vilsack both highlighted biofuels as renewable energy — despite critics' concerns that it bumps up food prices and turns Midwestern farmland into mono-crop factories.

Mobile BioFuel Technologies - Video Presentation

Mobile BioFuel Technologies Inc. (MBT) has created an exciting new cutting edge product. MBT is unveiling the world's first and only industrial grade Mobile Biodiesel Refinery. The mission of MBT Inc. is to manufacture and distribute these Mobile Biodiesel Trailers as well as other biofuel processing equipment to farms, cities, schools and businesses the world over, thus reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and encouraging environmental stewardship. We first introduced mobile biodiesel refineries in 2008. Early into the introduction phase we made the difficult decision to stop production and return to the drawing board. The motivation to reengineer our mobile processors was twofold. First, we immediately realized that we had discovered a profound niche in the biodiesel refining market that offered enormous global potential. This brought us to the conclusion that it was in the best interest of MBT to create a safer, more user-friendly machine capable of producing larger quantities of fuel. Second, understanding that knock-offs and imitations would be entering this untapped market, we decided to invest heavily into researching and developing the latest technologies and incorporating industrial quality components and construction throughout our top of the line Mobile Refineries. What we have created simply has no peers. These units can produce vast amounts of premium biodiesel with very little labor and are engineered to handle even the heaviest of production demands.
