Twenty two niche car clubs from across the country have come together at the Bira Circuit near Pattaya for the Car Club Festival organised by the Super Club Thailand 2010. The idea being for the different clubs, all united by an overriding passion for the automobile, would mix together, showcase themselves and take part in activities, notably plenty of diversified on-track racing action. The clubs dotted around the infield are made up of the: Toyota Corolla 80, Eleven RD Chantaburi Car Club, 2 Drivers Rayong Club, AE Racing Club, Vios Club & One Make Race, Freestyle, Saraburi Racing Circuit 2010, Corona Club Burapha, Chonburi Friend Club, KE Club Chonburi, Euro Club Race, Unity Honda & Corona Club, MR2, VIP Club Thailand, 200 SX & Silvia, Cefiro Thailand, Sport Truck Club, JDM Racing Attack, EG 3D Car Club, Super club My Friends, Toronto Club and the Daihatsu Club. There are plenty of banners on show and some have set up booths and displays and have accessories for sale. The Thai motor sports season wraps up with one final event, XO Autosport sponsored Time Attack, which takes place at Bira, the home of the country's circuit racing. A week after the Thai Super Car series wraps up with the five-day street racing extravaganza at Bangsaen just up the coastline from Pattaya and Bira, a smattering of cars from this championship as well as the Pattaya Pro Racing Series will take to the 2.41 km track at intervals for a showdown against the clock and finally against each other. Like the Pattaya Pro Racing Series, Time Attack is also promoted by GPI Motorsport. Time Attack is taking place over two days, Saturday and Sunday, but due to other commitments I can only make it on Saturday which seems to be very much the warm-up day with practice and qualifying runs before the main race action takes place on Sunday. There isnt a whole lot happening on the track with a handful runners making sporadic appearances for around four to five laps. There are 10 classes listed, starting with Under 1500 FWD and running through under 1600cc/2000cc and over 2000cc, all split into front-or-rear-wheel-drive categories and in the case of over-2000cc, there is an all-wheel-drive class. Finally there is the Open Silhouette category where pretty much anything goes, engines can be up to 6-cylinders, there is no minimum weight limit, spaceframe or monocoque chassis are accepted, and tyres are free (slicks are used, whereas the other classes must use grooved rubber). The morning starts with the Super Club Sport Truck race won by Pitak K (#6 Isuzu) who crossed the line just under 10 seconds ahead of Sutiphot P (#19 Chevrolet). The Super Club FF race goes to Komkrit L (#41 Honda Civic) while the Super Club Classic encounter goes to "Japanese" category driver Chalermpon P (#86) Toyota with the "Euro Retro" runners led out by Artapon Ch (#79 BMW) who is just 3.163 seconds back at the chequered flag. The podium is rounded out by the pretty yellow #27 Porsche 944 of Henk Kiks which started from pole position but soon dropped back to finish 17.343 seconds back at the flag. A comfortable victory in the Production 1500 race goes to Paradon Nutchanart (#89 Toyota Vios) while there is quickly another clear winner, Pisanu Sirimongkhonkasem (#90 Toyota Yaris), who collects the spoils in the following Super 1500 race. The morning's final race see the Super Commonrail runners belching their thick black diesel smoke around the track, choosing a variety of racing lines and engaging in plenty of crowd-pleasing door-to-door action. Victory eventually goes to Mana Pornsiricherd (#59 Mitsubishi Triton) who has just over three seconds in hand over Kajonsak Na Songkla (#4 Isuzu) at the end of the 20-lap encounter. The atmosphere builds toward the "big race" showdown as the crowd surges into the infield for the post-lunchtime pit walkabout. Last weekend the fifth and final double-header round of the Pattaya Pro Racing Series was held at the Bira International Circuit, located just 10 km inland from the popular Thai seaside resort, and after trips to two rounds of the Super Carchampionship at Bira in recent months it was time to venture back to this 2.41 km permanent course to see the action on offer from what is a relatively new motor sport championship. The weather was warm and pleasant which always a good starting point to a weekends racing. The Pattaya Pro Racing Series Series offers a multi-layer programme much like the Super Car series, combining production cars, pick-ups and motorbikes in a rapid-fire programme. Like the Super Cars there is an itinerary of races on the Saturday and Sunday. As I have mentioned previously the Bira circuit, which first opened in 1985, is Thailands only FIA approved track and is the countrys premier facility. After the shock of stepping away from an itinerary that involves the worlds biggest and most-modern tracks in moving to Thailand earlier this year and immersing myself into local motorsport life, Bira, does pose a decent challenge to the driver and engineer on a track that is actually quite demanding and technical. The warm-up act to the main race, Super 2000, which basically allows pretty broad modification to sedans and coupés up to 2000cc, was action packed. In this encounter the top four comprised of two red-and-white official liveried Toyota Altis twins which traded paintwork with a couple of Honda DC5s before, Pirompakdee Piti (the son of the owner of Singha Beer, which seems to have its decals on almost every car in the paddock) got the upper hand and the front-runners settled down to a spaced out finishing order just a handful of laps from the chequered flag. By the end of the 22-lap race Piti had eased out to a decent cushion at the front and had a useful 10.868 seconds in hand over the second-placed Altis of Manat.
