Intellectualize My Blackness

A series of photos from some amazing women (musicians, actors, poets & writers)who've had to deal with the color of their skin being thrown back at them at some point or another (not to mention their gender) The more women you can recognize, the more brownie points you get ;-) (but, if you ask nicely, I could put up a list of the women!) Halle Berry, Blackness Confirmed

I can't count how many times people keep bringing up the issue of ethnicity. A little lesson on why Halle Berry should be less concerned with the ethnicity of her near-white-looking daughter and should focus more on not looking like an ignorant dumbass. The "one-drop rule" is bullshit. And remember, black history is American history. We don't need to set aside a separate month for it. Blackness Castle

Located on a rocky promontory beyond the village of Blackness, Blackness Castle stands on the south shore of the Firth of Forth 3 miles (5 km) east of Bo'ness. It was built as a place of defence around 1440 by the Crichton family. By 1453 ownership had passed to the Crown, Sir George Crichton (brother of Sir William, Chancellor of Scotland) having presented it to King James II (1430-60). Between 1537 and 1543 the castle was reinforced by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart (d.1540) to become one of the strongest fortifications in Scotland. It was at this time that the castle took the form of a ship, with the bow pointing out to the river and the stern facing inland. Blackness was used as a high-security prison until 1707, its most famous prisoner being Cardinal David Beaton (1494 - 1548). It was besieged and severely damaged by Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650, and was subsequently repaired to confine the Covenanters in 1667. After 50 years of obscurity, it was pressed into service once again to hold French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars until 1815. The castle comprises three towers, the Central Tower rising to four storeys, the South Tower where the principal residential rooms were located, and the North Tower where the prison and pit were to be found. In 1870, the castle was converted once again to become the principal ammunition depot for Scotland. Separate barrack blocks for the officers and men were constructed along with a new seaward entrance and a long pier ...

Sounds Of Blackness - " I Believe " ( Classic Gospel Mix )

A 40-person choir and ten-piece orchestra led by Gary Hines, combined traditional African music with urban soul to become one of the most distinctive and popular contemporary gospel groups. Over the course of their career, the group won many awards, from organizations as diverse as the Grammies and the NAACP. Russel Knighton formed the group, The Macalester College Black Chores, that would prove to be the origins of Sounds of Blackness in 1969 at St. Paul, Minnesota's Macalester College. In 1971, Gary Hines was hired as their musical director and the group began developed its own identity. They opened the group up to the entire community and expanded their musical scope to concentrate on all aspects of black music. They designed the group as a way to embrace all manners of African-American music and create rich, diverse music to celebrate God and the human spirit, as well as make social statements. With their new direction in mind, the group renamed themselves Sounds of Blackness. For the first decade and a half of the group's existence, Sounds of Blackness primarily played around Minneapolis, often opening for acts as diverse as Jackson 5, The and Hampton Hawes. They frequently released their own records, which helped them strengthen their local following. Partially by choice, Sounds of Blackness remained a regional attraction until 1989, when Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, the hot Minneapolis-based production team, brought Janet Jackson to one of their concerts. I Believe by Sounds of Blackness with Ann Nesby

I'm back with another YouTube video. I'm taking us back to 1994. This phenomonal 40 member, 10 piece band group known as Sounds of Blackess first arrived on the scene in 1969 in Minnesota, but it wasn't until 1971 that the group was solidified. Sounds of Blackness was the first real musical group to combine traditional African music with modern day American music, such as R&B and Gospel. In 1994, they came out with the album "Africa to America: The Journey of the Drum", one of its most successful albums to date. With now-famed singer Ann Nesby-Lee singing the solo to this song, this hip-hop/inspirational song is sure to keep you tapping your feet to the beat. I donot own this song, nor am I seeking monetary gains or publicity. The words of the song are on the video for those who want to follow along or learn the lyrics. I hope you enjoy. God Bless!!!
