Assistant Secretary Robert O. Blake, Jr. statement after the meeting with President Rahmon

Robert O. Blake, Jr. Assistant Secretary of State Bureau of South and Central Asia Affairs Press Stake out after the meeting with President Rahmon Presidential Palace April 12, 2011 Dushanbe, Tajikistan ASSISTANT SECRETARY BLAKE: Good morning. It's a great pleasure to be back here in Dushanbe. I just have had a very wide-ranging and productive meeting with the President. I briefed him on the excellent discussions that I had yesterday with Foreign Minister Zarifi as part of our annual bilateral consultations. I thanked the President for all of the help that Tajikistan is providing to stabilize Afghanistan. We discussed ways that the United States and Tajikistan can strengthen border security and counter-narcotics efforts. I briefed the President on a very useful meeting that I had this morning with the American Chamber of Commerce here in Dushanbe. I told him that the companies here believe that there are important opportunities for investment in the minerals and energy and other sectors, but there also remain impediments to investments such as the burdensome tax code. As always, we also discussed the very important human rights dimension and issues such as media freedom and religious freedom which are very important parts of any democratic society. We agreed that the United States and Tajikistan should continue our joint efforts to intensify cooperation between our two countries. I would be glad to take a few questions. QUESTION: [Through Interpreter]. Mr. Blake, we ...

ARC-2123 MOTHERLESS CHILD BY John Blake, Jr

ARC-2123 MOTHERLESS CHILD BY John Blake, Jr. --- The precursor to the blues as a music form was first heard in the chants and songs of African American slaves. Their lyrics of hardship, perseverance, and faith were expressed through work songs, hymns, and spirituals, some of which are beautifully interpreted on John Blake Jr.'s Motherless Child. Growing up in South Philadelphia, Blake had this influence placed within him at an early age through his exposure to church services. His mother played piano and organ, and together with the stirring sounds of singers, the sacred music forged lasting impressions. Its germination shaped his musical path, one that led the classically trained artist, world-class violinist, and educator in performances with pianist McCoy Tyner, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Turtle Island Quartet, and a number of recordings as a leader. It also led to Blake's involvement in local community projects and global humanitarian efforts. This release lifts the spirit and swings anew via Blake's longtime working quartet (his son, drummer Johnathan Blake, bassist Boris Koslov, and pianist Sumi Tonooka) and special guests that include the sublime Howard University jazz vocal ensemble, Afro Blue. Blake's empathetic yet progressive arrangements of sacred music fits well with Afro Blue's stylish and pristine voices. They move in harmony on the updated version of the title track, Blake's violin singing soulfully and guest Mulgrew Miller delivering a virtuoso ...

Windows 8 on Microsoft Surface 1.0

I installed Windows 8 Developer Preview on my Microsoft Surface 1.0 device a little over one day from when the Win8 preview was released publicly at the Build conference. I used MultiTouchVista from multitouchvista.codeplex.com to convert the Surface vision system contacts to Windows 8 HID touch input. (This technique also works on Windows 7.) Here is the tweet I sent during the video twitter.com This was simply an experiment to see if it was possible. It is NOT a supported configuration and has nothing to do with Surface 2.0. If you want to know more about Surface 2.0, which is due out very soon, then check out surface.com and my book Natural User Interfaces in .NET at http Blog post with more details: nui.joshland.org
