The Delta Bohemian's were able to attend the 32nd Annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis, TN on May 5, 2011. Accompanying Poor William and Magical Madge were Roger Stolle of Cat Head: Delta Blues and Folk Art, Becky Bobo Williams, Janet Coursin and Sarah Ruskey. John Arthur Lee - Down at the Depot Alabama bluesman, John Lee was born May 24, 1915, in Lowdnes County, AL. He learned his distinctive knife slide guitar style from his uncle, Ellie Lee, and spent the 1930s playing jukes and house parties before settling in Montgomery in 1945. Federal's Ralph Bass auditioned him there, and impressed with what he heard, recorded five sides in 1951. Other than "Down At The Depot" Lee recorded "Baby Please Don't Go" "Alabama Boogie" "Baby Blues" and "Blind's Blues" He also recorded an album for Rounder Records in the 1970 Thanks to Steve Leggett for the information.

Roger Earl and Gary Anton had the pleasure of presenting three BMA Awards to Buddy Guy at the 32nd Blues Music Awards in Memphis on May 5th. The first for Song of the Year was presented to Buddy and his co-writer/producer/drummer Tom Hambridge for "Living Proof", the 2nd was for Album of the Year for Buddy Guy for "Living Proof" and the 3rd was for BB King Entertainer of the year! And what a performance he put on for the Award audience! We will post bits of it here soon!

Prof. Sodsai Pantoomkomol His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was born in Cambridge (Massachusetts, USA), but he received his school education in Switzerland. There (still being a Prince) he received his first musical education. He started to play the clarinet when he was ten years old. Living in Europe in the forties of the Twentieth Century, when jazz was very popular everywhere, he also developed a liking for this music, and it should not be considered surprising that his first compositions were strongly influenced by jazz music. His first composition, the Candle Light Blues, is written completely according to the blues sequence of chords.

Boogie woogie is the best known kind of piano blues, though barrelhouse, swing, R&B, rock and roll and jazz are strongly influenced by early pianists who played the blues. Notable blues pianists include Roosevelt Sykes, Memphis Slim, Otis Spann, Sunnyland Slim, Pinetop Perkins, Dr. John, and Ray Charles. The Piano Blues is also the title of an episode of Martin Scorsese's documentary series The Blues. The episode was directed by Clint Eastwood, himself an avid piano blues enthusiast and one-time jazz pianist. From a musical family, he was a cousin of Earl Hooker. John was also influenced by his stepfather, a local blues guitarist, who learned in Shreveport, Louisiana to play a droning, one-chord blues that was strikingly different from the Delta blues of the time. John developed a half-spoken style that was his trademark. Though, similar to the early Delta blues, his music was rhythmically free. His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen" (1948) and "Boom Boom" (1962)"
