Shepard Fairey + The Obama Poster (Boing Boing)

Boing Boing Video: www.boingboing.net One year ago, Boing Boing editor David Pescovitz blogged a cool new "socialist-realist" style poster created by street artist Shepard Fairey for the Barack Obama presidential campaign. Today, January 20, 2009, Obama will be sworn in as President of the United States. Sean Bonner and I visited Shepard's art gallery in LA some weeks ago with Boing Boing's video team to talk with Shepard about how this image came to be. We also wanted to know what the past year has been like for the artist most of us here on the blog previously knew as "The Andre The Giant Has a Posse Guy." The moment we walked into the space, Shepard had picked up a call on his cellphone, was staring intently into space, and uttering a lot of thoughtful "mm-hmmms." When he hung up the phone, he turned to us and smiled. I asked who he'd been on the phone with, and he explained the call was from Obama's staff, telling him for the first time that an adaptation of this same poster would be used as the official inauguration poster. Inauguration day has come, and with it, the beginning of a new era in America. I don't know what this era will bring. I don't know what kind of president Obama will be. But I hope we achieve what Shepard's poster said: progress.

Throbbing Gristle Interview: Boing Boing Video (2009 Reunion Tour)

Before we shot this Boing Boing Video interview with legendary industrial music band Throbbing Gristle, Richard Metzger and I spoke to the band's sound technician backstage, and asked what we should expect in the way of sub-bass frequencies -- rumored to be so powerful during performances that cameras can't hold a steady shot, and bowels sometimes can't hold their contents. Charlie Poulet, TG's sound tech, cracked up and flashed an evil grin. "Oh, we got some frequencies," he laughed, "Yeah, we definitely got some frequencies ready for you people tonight." Those "frequencies" are part of what make TG's music so transcendental and disturbing, and in the BB interview with Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, we explore their technical and creative underpinnings. We hear TG members talk about the sort of mind-meld trance they all fall in to while performing, and we learn about the early days of recording work like "Hamburger Lady" to cassette tapes, then walking down to have a hamburger together at a corner sandwich shop down the street from their old studio in what was then a really shitty part of London. Gen talks about her first time with Twitter, and we hear what it's like for the band once called "wreckers of civilization" to be celebrated, more than 30 years later, as living legends. - Xeni Jardin Complete blog post on Boing Boing: www.boingboing.net More on Throbbing Gristle's website: throbbing-gristle.com

The Decemberists Interview: Boing Boing Video / Scott Compton

In case you're not hip to The Decemberists, they're a fantastic indie/folk/rock outfit from Portland, Oregon who took 15 years to become an overnight success. Their influences are diverse, from 1960s British folksters like Shirley Collins and Anne Briggs to 1980s modern rock songwriters like XTC, REM, and Morrissey. In January, the band released its sixth album, an epic alt.country/bluesy work titled The King Is Dead and took to the road. When their wagon train came through Oakland's Fox Theater in February, Boing Boing pal and hypertalented video director Scott Compton made the scene. BB readers may remember Scott for directing the Swell Season interview/performance film in 2009 that quickly became a Boing Boing Video fave. The Decemberists' timing was impeccable as it was Valentine's Day and Scott, well, loves The Decemberists. Scott rallied his crack video team -- the inimitable Bart Nagel and Chris Valente on Canon 5D cameras and Lauretta Molitor on sound -- for 20 minutes with the band and stageside access for a couple tunes. Then he took the footage back to his Remedy Editorial facility where editor Jeffrey Boyette and colorist Ayumi Ashley worked their post-production magic. The video team's passion and the band's talent gelled into the lovely piece you see above. "In person, The Decemberists were humble, smart, and collaborative," Scott says. How to hack RFID-enabled Credit Cards for $8 (BBtv)

A number of credit card companies now issue credit cards with embedded RFIDs (radio frequency ID tags), with promises of enhanced security and speedy transactions. But on today's episode of Boing Boing tv, hacker and inventor Pablos Holman shows Xeni how you can use about $8 worth of gear bought on eBay to read personal data from those credit cards -- cardholder name, credit card number, and whatever else your bank embeds in this manner. Fears over data leaks from RFID-enabled cards aren't new, and some argue they're overblown -- but this demo shows just how cheap and easy the "sniffing" can be. This episode is part of our ongoing series of interviews with some of the thinkers, hackers, and tinkerers at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference this year. Die Antwoord's US debut at Coachella: interview with Xeni (Boing Boing Video)

Ninja and Yo-Landi of Die Antwoord sat down with Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing.net for an interview just after the South African "rap-rave" band's first-ever US performance at the Coachella music festival. The duo spoke about their explosive, internet-fueled burst to fame, and about the origins of their "car crash music" (it's disturbing, but you can't look away) by way of District 9 and an anarchic internet and music subculture in post-Apartheid South Africa. We're told this was the only interview Die Antwoord granted during their US visit. Boing Boing tv passes the 150th episode mark today, and we're celebrating by cooking up some delicious takenoko (竹の子), young bamboo shoots, with Joi Ito -- and original music by Ryuichi Sakamoto. You may know Joi as a serial entrepreneur, a twittering globetrotter VC, a World of Warcraft junkie, or the CEO of Creative Commons, but he has a more traditional side, too. In this video, Ito welcomes us into his back yard in Japan, where he and his partner Mizuka teach us how to hunt for and prepare this traditional seasonal delicacy from a lush bamboo forest. The episode is accompanied by an original score composed by Grammy, Academy Award, and Golden Globe-winning composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. For more episodes of Boing Boing tv, visit tv.boingboing.net.

My Morning Jacket by Scott Compton (Boing Boing Video)

On June 24, My Morning Jacket descended on Oakland's historic Fox Theater for an epic performance in support of their majestic album, Circuital. Remedy Editorial's Scott Compton and his merry band of video documentarians made the scene on behalf of Boing Boing. You'll remember Scott and crew as the artistes who brought The Swell Season and The Decemberists to the big little screen for Boing Boing Video. We are now honored to feature their loving cut of My Morning Jacket, interviewed and live in concert on June 24, 2011. Here's Scott: About our time with the band: We spent about 45 minutes interviewing the band. This is one of those happy stories where you meet your heroes and they are even cooler than you had hoped. They were unscripted, present, and exhibited a great esprit de corps both in the interview and onstage. I got the sense that they were appreciative of their fans. I'm an even bigger fan now and I hope the BB audience enjoys the extended 21 minute experience. Thanks to MMJ road manager Eric Mayers for his collaborative spirit and of course the beautiful Fox Oakland theatre and Tony Leong of Another Planet Entertainment. About the production: MMJ like shows are legendary. Lighting Designer Marc Janowitz immerses the audience with an ultra-sophisticated blend of colors and shapes. The audience response to the sight/sound is emotional and visceral. I wanted to give the MMJ fan a sense of what it was like to be in the audience at the Fox in Oakland. Every concert ...

Cory Doctorow on The War on Kids, Boing Boing, & His Next Novel

As one of the editors of Boing Boing, Cory Doctorow runs one of the best-known blogs on the planet. As the author of best-selling young-adult novels such as Little Brother and the new For The Win, he has his pulse on what it is like to be growing up in the 21st century. As a writer who simultaneously publishes his work online for free and via a traditional bookseller (Tor), he is at the bleeding edge of creating what he calls 21st century art: "contemporary art that is made to be copied." In July Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie talked with Doctorow about raising free-range children, the future of copyright, and what makes Boing Boing tick. Approximately 5.26 minutes. During the mid-'70s, Germany's Kraftwerk established the sonic blueprint followed by an extraordinary number of artists in the decades to come. From the British new romantic movement to hip-hop to techno, the group's self-described "robot pop" — hypnotically minimal, obliquely rhythmic music performed solely via electronic means — resonates in virtually every new development to impact the contemporary pop scene of the late- 20th century, and as pioneers of the electronic music form,

Octopus Brains [UNCUT, 30-MINUTE VERSION]

Everybody loves cephalopods—that class of animals containing octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. But why? What makes these non-fluffy, non-mammals so appealing? Last August, I attempted to answer that question in a presentation for a University of New Mexico IGERT symposium (www.chtm.unm.edu "Those Fabulous Octopus Brains" is a speech linking cephalopod neurobiology to cephalopod behavior, and asking what it really means to call a species "intelligent". It'll get you caught up on what we do, and don't, know about cephalopod smarts—and what studying these amazing creatures means for the future of human technology, and our understanding of the human brain. Don't have time to watch the entire thing? Never fear. The intrepid editors at BoingBoing Video have put together a highlights reel that will enlighten you in a 1/3 of the time. The Aquabats have been a band for over a decade, have toured the world, and put out 5 full length studio albums."
