Bolivia

Un tour por Bolivia. An enormous diversity of ecological zones are represented within Bolivia's territory. The western highlands of the country are situated in the Andes mountains and include the Bolivian Altiplano. The eastern lowlands include large sections of Amazonian rainforests and Chaco. The highest peak is Nevado Sajama at 6542 metres (21463 ft) located in the department of Oruro. Lake Titicaca is located on the border between Bolivia and Peru. The Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, lies in the southwest corner of the country, in the department of Potosí. Major cities are La Paz, El Alto, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and Cochabamba. Bolivia's ethnic distribution is estimated to be 30% Quechua-speaking and 25% Aymara-speaking Amerindians. The largest of the approximately three-dozen native groups are the Quechuas (2.5 million), Aymaras (2 million), then Chiquitano (180000), and Guaraní (125000). So the full Amerindian population is at 55% and the remaining 30% is Mestizo (mixed Amerindian and European) and around 15% are Whites. Bolivian culture has been heavily influenced by the Quechua, the Aymara, as well as by the popular cultures of Latin America as a whole. The best known of the various festivals found in the country is the "Carnaval de Oruro", which was among the first 19 "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity," as proclaimed by the UNESCO in May of 2001. Bolivia

Bolivia,is a landlocked country in central South America. It is bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina to the south, and Chile and Peru to the west. Prior to European colonization, the Bolivian territory was a part of the Inca Empire, which was the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, this territory was called Upper Peru or Charcas and was under the administration of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which included most of Spain's South American colonies. After declaring independence in 1809, 16 years of war followed before the establishment of the republic, named for Simón Bolívar, on August 6, 1825. Bolivia has struggled through periods of political instability, dictatorships and economic woes. Bolivia is a democratic republic, divided into nine departments. Its geography is varied from the peaks of the Andes in the west, to the eastern lowlands, situated within the Amazon Basin. It is a developing country, with a medium Human Development Index score, and a poverty level around 60%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, forestry, and fishing, mining and manufacturing goods such as textiles, clothing, refined metals, and refined petroleum. Bolivia is very wealthy in minerals especially tin. The Bolivian population, estimated at 9 million, is multiethnic, including Amerindians, Mestizos, Europeans, Asians and Africans. Bolivian protesters use official as shield

Amazonian indigenous groups in Bolivia have staged massive protests for more than a week against a government highway project imposed on their land. In an unusual tactic recently used to avoid violent police attempts to crush the protests, demonstrators forced David Choquehuanca, the country's foreign minister, to march against the project with them against his own will. While the government says the road is being built because its needed for development, the natives fear an invasion of settlers and are struggling to maintain their nature preserve. Azhar Sukri reports.

Death Slide Home!

While some think we've gone health-and-safety mad in the UK, this insane clip of some workers in Bolivia shows the opposite end of the scale. To save them having to walk down and across a huge valley, these Coca workers have rigged up cables which they suspend themselves from with rusted, old pulleys held together with bits of string. They risk everything gliding over the gorge with their harvest and even their children tied precariously beneath them! Bolivia: Deadliest Journeys

Criss-crossing the valleys of Bolivia, hundreds of metres above the ground, is a network of makeshift cables. Clinging onto these cables, coca growers whizz across the mountains, transporting their harvest. Should they slip or the aged cables snap, they face certain death. Once they've reached the other side of the mountain, the danger doesn't end. The coca then has to be transported along the 'Camino de la Muerte', or Highway of Death'. It's the only route connecting La Paz, Bolivia's administrative capital, with the Amazon Basin. And it's officially the most dangerous road in the world. Salar de Uyuni Tours in Bolivia

South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat. Music: Cliff Martinez - I that everybody wants (from the motion picture Solaris) Credits: Ayrton Orio and Sharon Kendelker In a world where the time flies, where people are required to work on a fast speed and stress is more and more common in humans, the choice of where to go gives now priority to places that offered silence and tranquility. In Bolivia, near the border with Chile, there is a small community where the main economic activities apart from llama-herding and quinua-farming, is mining salt. Uyuni Salt Lake is a peculiar place. About 40000 years ago, this arid area used to be part of a lake that covered a large swath of the Andes. Nowadays it is The World's Biggest Salt Desert. South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat". The crust of salt covers a surface of 10.582 Km2. of extension, at an altittude of 3.653 meters above sea level, like a static sea touched by by the southern winds. Like any other desert, the weather conditions in Uyuni Bolivia are extreme, from freezing night temperatures to fierce desert sun. In the Salar itself, you can find several hotels which have been made from salt bricks, including beds, chairs and cocktail bars. All is made from salt! Furthermore, the Salar de Uyuni has impressive views. A flat whiteness, fringed by the peaks of mountains on the horizon beneath a bright blue sky can be ...
