Dance is an integral part of the BOMBA: the dancers move their bodies to every beat of the drum, making bomba a very wild and rich dance. Bomba is described to be a challenge between the drummer and the dancer. The dancer produces a series of gestures to which the primo drummer provides a synchronized beat. Thus, it is the drummer who attempts to follow the dancer and not the other way around.

Bomba is the music from northern Puerto Rico, around San Juan. Bomba music and dance were performed by the slave population and resound with the rhythms of Africa, much like Cuba's rumba. Bomba is also the name of the drum traditionally used to perform this music. Originally, the only instruments used for bomba were the drum by the same name and maracas; the melodies were sung in a dialogue with the percussion, while the women raised their skirts as they danced to mimic the plantation "ladies".
Atabey: Bomba en Santa Ana, CA. Part 1

ATABEY: Bomba Afro-Boricua drumming, singing & dancing Join Atabey on FaceBook: www.facebook.com Atabey was formed in the early spring of 2008 in Los Angeles, Ca by Jose Rodriguez aka Fawole. The foundation of the groups knowledge on the rhythms, songs, and dances of Bomba come from various mentors from the island of Puerto Rico and from various people from around the United States. The majority of our groups knowledge however comes from years of studying with Elia Cortez of Tamboricua, Coco Barrez from Bayanga/Calle Trece, and Vitito Emanuelli from Bomba Evolucion and from the homies in San Diego, Areito Borincano whom I was a founding member of. Our group is dedicated to performing and educating people on Afro-Puerto Rican music and culture. All people interested in joining the group or learning about classes please send us a message. We give classes on song, drumming, and dance!!! Atabey represents a continuous struggle of Afro-Boricua people to maintain and promote their culture through drumming, dance and song. Bomba music is a tradition that was brought to Puerto Rico from Africa by the slaves who worked in sugar cane plantations. The music represents a mixture of religious, cultural, and poverty dynamics within struggles of life and love. The name Atabey is one of many names used to call out to the deity in Taino culture of mother earth and sometimes represents fertility and renewal. The music of Puerto Rico is alive in Los Angeles, California!
