Kanzi the bonobo demonstrates language recognition, and shows his understanding of intentions while playing with the narrator. Bonobo vs. Pacman

Making the assumption that if cognition was to be found in non-human species, it would most likely be in the ones that were most similar to ourselves - bonobos. In this modern age experiment, a test is being conducted to exercise the hand-eye coordination of bonobos and whether they can understand an end goal. On a side note: this ape seems right at home in the video game world. But I am still not seeing the importance of teaching him how to play Pacman. Now Donkey-Kong, that's a game I think he would like.

The Bonobo Song

Buy The Bonobo Song! The Bonobo Beat area group of talented young apes from the Democratic Republic of Congo who are currently touring the world promoting their latest album "Congolian Dreaming". They recently took time out from their busy schedule to record "The Bonobo Song" which was written for them by SpeciesCreative's team of hit songwriters. Bonobos are the most endangered of the great apes and are found solely in the Democratic Republic of Congo where there are only about 10000 left. Bonobo's share 98% of their DNA with humans, and are unique in that they do not fight amongst themselves, which is why they are sometimes referred to as "the good apes". It is predicted that without our help - Bonobos could become extinct in the next decade this is due to a combination of habitat loss, and hunting for bush meat. The civil war in the DRC, which has been ongoing since the 1990's, has added to this problem. Visit ecoptimist.com and learn more about endangered species and how to protect them.

RARE BONOBO BORN AT THE COLUMBUS ZOO

A baby bonobo was born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium yesterday afternoon as Zoo volunteers and staff who have been conducting around the clock observations since February 17 watched via surveillance camera. This is the eleventh bonobo born at the Columbus Zoo since the Zoo received its first bonobos in 1990 in conjunction with the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for this endangered ape. This is the fourth baby for mother Susie who is caring for the newborn in the company of the other bonobos in her group including her offspring Donnie, born in 1993, and Lola, born in 2004. Daughter Kimia, born in 1999, now resides at the Cincinnati Zoo. Bonobos live in dynamic groups and confirmation of the babys sire, either Toby or Jimmy, awaits the results of genetic paternity testing. Currently there are 85 bonobos in ten facilities in North America and 15 reside at the Columbus Zoo. Bonobos and people share more than 98% of the same DNA; in fact, bonobos and chimpanzees are more closely related genetically to humans than they are to gorillas. The bonobo is the smallest of the great apes and is a separate species from the chimpanzee. Females give birth to a single baby after a gestation period of approximately 8.5 months. Bonobos were the last of the great apes to be discovered and is the rarest with only 5000-50000 living in the equatorial forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The primary threat to the endangered bonobo is human behavior, mainly habitat destruction caused ...

Young female bonobos having a tickle fight and sex

There's some sex and french kissing around 1:46. Not unlike humans, bonobos frequently integrate sex into play. Notice how when the female adult gets hurt, the play stops. At 4:43, the adolescent mirrors the adult as she nurses her injury. This is a fine example of empathy. Notice the squinty eyes and open-mouthed smile. That's the ape "play face." Humans make the same expression. They also laugh. Unfortunately the laughter didn't penetrate the glass. This is the most fun I've had researching for a paper. I captured this at the Milwaukee Zoo as homework for my ethology class.

Bonobo, Chimp, Gorilla, Orangutan Captive Wild Greeting

Video shows the bonobo, Chimp, Gorilla, Orangutan, both wild and captive, and humans in primate greetings. Both captive and wild individuals are shown. Also shown is Colo the first gorilla born in captivity and world's oldest gorilla. Primates use pretty much the same greetings, such as head nods, facial expressions, saluting, knocking on things, and hand gestures, whether ape or human. Humans may use facial paint for color as the mandrill does. In the first part of the video, the bonobo, Lady, and the human hadn't greeted each other for around 2 years. Also, the human had heard that Lady was no longer there. However, both recognized and greeted each other. A large strong gorilla is shown gently knocking on a door in the next portion. After he fails to arouse anyone, he kicks the door -- letting them know he is there. Note how his posture resembles ones that humans take when knocking and how his head moves in rhythm with his knocking. He also struts past some people. A young gorilla greets people with waves. The big male looks over the assortment of humans watching him. Several bonobos greet each other by grooming. Colo, the world's first gorilla born in captivity and also the world's oldest gorilla, simply watches people passing by. Video shows the bright colors the mandrill uses in greetings. Young bonobos and young humans play and greet each other together. The bonobos will play attack people because they consider the area by the glass as their space A wild chimpanzee ...

This is Panbanisha; she is a Bonobo Chimpanzee (Pan Paniscus). Another very well known Bonobo is Kanzi which is Panbanisha's adopted brother. These Apes have their own language and have acquired through observation understand of the human language, not only are they our closest relatives they are the closest species to match our level of intellect. I recommend everyone ready Kanzi - The Ape at the Brink of the Human Mind! FYI, Examples of Kanzi's behavior * In an outing in the Georgia woods, Kanzi touched the symbols for "marshmallows" and "fire." Susan Savage-Rumbaugh said in an interview that, "Given matches and marshmallows, Kanzi snapped twigs for a fire, lit them with the matches and toasted the marshmallows on a stick."[5] * Paul Raffaele, at Savage-Rumbaugh's request, performed a Maori War Dance for the Bonobos. This dance includes thigh-slapping, chest-thumping, and hollering. Almost all the bonobos present interpreted this as an aggressive display, and reacted with loud screams, tooth-baring, and pounding the walls and floor. All but Kanzi, who remained perfectly calm; he then communicated with Savage-Rumbaugh using bonobo vocalizations; Savage-Rumbaugh understood these vocalizations, and said to Raffaele "he'd like you to do it again just for him, in a room out back, so the others won't get upset. So a private performance in another room was successfully, peacefully and happily carried out.[5] * Sue Savage-Rumbaugh has observed Kanzi in communication to his ...

Bonobo Chimp Talk Mate Rare Sound Vocalization Greeting Endangered

Very rare video shows the vocalization of the Bonobo or Pygmy Chimpanzee. Few if any recordings of bonobo vocalizations exist. The bonobos are heard screaming and sound much like people. Bonobos also make a murmuring sound that is more difficult to record. They are highly intelligent and can read and write (using a computer). A bonobo, Kanzi, has a large vocabulary. Maybe they have a language that people dont understand. The bonobos recognize individual people. One of the bonobos, who knows me, came to greet me. The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. It is a highly endangered species. Only around 140 bonobos are in captivity (2002), world wide, and only around 100 are exhibited. It is noted for its human-like appearance and for walking upright. Some researchers consider the bonobo to be the best living prototype of the common ancestor of humans. The Red Data Book, of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, lists the bonobo as endangered. They may soon be extinct in the wild.. (74.125.47.132 Bonobs are also shown mating. In one case a female is shown mating with both a son and daughter. This, in the bonobo, is often a form of greeting, rather than actual mating.
