Paul Frederic Bowles (December 30, 1910 - November 18, 1999) was an American expatriate composer, author, and translator. Following a cultured middle-class upbringing in New York City, during which he displayed a talent for music and writing, Bowles pursued his education at the University of Virginia before making various trips to Paris in the 1930s. He studied music with Aaron Copland and in New York wrote music for various theatrical productions, as well as other compositions. He achieved critical and popular success with the publication in 1949 of his first novel The Sheltering Sky, set in what was known as French North Africa, which he had visited in 1931. Except for winters spent in Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon) during the early 1950s, Tangier was his home for the remainder of his life. Paul Bowles died in 1999 at the age of 88. His ashes are buried in Lakemont Cemetery in upstate New York. Paul Bowles' reputation as a composer was ultimately overshadowed by his writing. He studied with Aaron Copland. He wrote chamber music and incidental music for the stage. The score of his 1955 opera Yerma is especially memorable and gets much radio-play. He collected Moroccan folk music. Along the way he aims more questions inward than at the outside world, without ever falling prey to easy rationalizations or self-pity. In the record's stark opener, the late Mark Heard's "What Kind of Friend," backed simply by a stark drumbeat, he asks, "What kind of friend am I?" It may not seem like much on the surface, but Ralston (who drops his surname) proceeds to show why this may be the toughest question of all. In his quest for "grace" (the title of one of the album's best songs), there are obstacles: angry words, wants, needs, regrets, and plenty of gray areas, all of which are handled with humility, dignity, and a somewhat spiritual bent (think T-Bone Burnett). There's also a subtlety and insight at work here that's missing in the material of most singer/songwriters these days. Bowles steers clear of the big statements and grand gestures. Instead, he deals with the quiet complexities of the everyday. In 2004, Thomas & Henry (Dee) Bowles returned to Omaha Beach, in Normandy, France, 60 years after the D-Day invasion. They served together in the Army from 1940 to 1945 as part of the Big Red One. Normandy was their third landing of the war...they also took part in the invasions of North Africa & Sicily. During this trip the twins were accompanied by Thomas' five sons and a Battlebus tour guide (Geert), who did an excellent job. Thank you to all those veterans that have served.

Remember that funky old Bowles MSL that I took pictures of? Well Duane Bowles was kind enough to get the thing to fire up and set it out for us to play with! Truck has a Detroit 6-71 motor and a Hydrostatic Rear end, meaning that the rear end is operated via hydraulics instead of a traditional driveshaft (this is what the whirring noise you hear when the truck is in motion). A few advantages to this design is that you also lose the need to have a frame, saving TONS of weight and giving you a low height and very DEEP hopper with no need for a packer panel. You get to see the full pack blade in action, you get to see the barn doors open, the packer in action, me driving from inside and outside the cab and more! There was too much video so I had to edit it down a little, but Zach has even more from his camera, so bug him a little and get him to upload his videos!
