music:George Enescu - Poem Constantin Brancusi (February 19, 1876 March 16, 1957) was an internationally renowned Romanian sculptor whose works, which blend simplicity and sophistication, led the way for numerous modernist sculptors. Brâncuşi grew up in the village of Hobiţa Romania, Gorj, near Târgu Jiu, near Romania's Carpathian Mountains, an area known for its rich tradition of folk crafts, particularly ornate woodcarving. The simple geometric patterns of the craftsmen is seen in his mature works. In 1903 Brâncuşi traveled to Munich, and from there to Paris. In Paris, he was welcomed by the community of artists and intellectuals brimming with new ideas.[3] He worked for two years in the workshop of Antonin Mercié of the École des Beaux-Arts, and was invited to enter the workshop of Auguste Rodin. Even though he admired the eminent Rodin he left the Rodin studio after only two months, saying, "Nothing can grow under big trees." He died on March 16, 1957 at the age of 81 leaving 1200 photographs and 215 sculptures. He was buried in the Cimetière du Montparnasse in Paris. Also located in that cemetery are statues carved by Brâncuşi for several fellow artists who died; the best-known of these is "Le Baiser" ("The Kiss").www.brancusi.ro en.wikipedia.org www.brancusi.ro

The sculptor and photographer Constantin Brancusi, a peasant's son, was born in Hobita, Romania in 1876. On leaving school, he was employed in a cabinet-maker's workshop before enrolling at the Bucharest Art Academy in 1898. Moving to Paris, in 1904, he soon became part of the art scene there and made a great many friends, including Amadeo Modigliani, Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp and Jean Cocteau. Brancusi first showed work at the Salon d'Automne in 1906. Although his early work was in the academy tradition, he developed a distinctive style of his own from 1907. Thematically he preferred classical antiquity and motifs drawn from the nature myths of his native land, further developing these into protracted series of works, some of which went on for decades. Invariably reducing the themes Brancusi started out with to abstract simplicity, he distilled them into what he saw as the essence of a motif, thus coming ever closer to the essential statement he wanted to make with them. "The Kiss", "Bird in Space", "Endless Column" are prime examples of this approach. This serial working process and strict limitation to stone, bronze and wood as his materials are salient features of his œuvre. Not long after his first one-man show in New York in 1914, Brancusi became acquainted with important American collectors. Man Ray taught him the essentials of photography in 1921. During the 1930s Brancusi was preoccupied with the links between architecture and sculpture. The upshot was ...

He came to Paris in 1904 and from 1916 he occupied a studio, first at n.8 and from 1928 at n.11, in Impasse Ronsin in the 15th arrondissement. It was in these studios that he produced the main body of his work up until his death in 1957. In 1956 he bequeathed his studio along with its entire contents (finished works, sketches, furniture, tools, library, record collection etc.) to the French State on condition that the Musée national d'art moderne undertook to reconstruct it exactly as it stood on the day of his death. The studio reconstruction by Renzo Piano in 1997 is not intended to be an ethnological recreation of the layout of the place down to the smallest detail, but to communicate the unity that Brancusi created between his sculptures inside that studio space. At his end of his life he succeeded in building up large series of works, such as "Colonnes sans fin" and "Grands Coqs" groups, which he did not wish to move since he believed he had found the best arrangements for them to be viewed in; this unity should be seen as the very fulfilment of his work. Brancusi's studio was located near Montparnasse in a district made up of alleyways that lent it a private character and was surrounded by other artist's ...

A beautiful metaphor for Brancusi's sculptures "Whose luminous beauty is his legacy. I bid you farewell but your works remain exalted, pure, luminous, never so alive as today, and they will never cease to live" Georges A.Salles - Director to Museum (Paris) Constantin Brancusi is sleeping at Montparnasse cemetery with his bones but his soul flying in the Universe. I am proud because I am born in the same day with you, Maestro!
