Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht (help·info) (born Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht (help·info); 10 February 189814 August 1956) was a German poet, playwright, and theatre director. An influential theatre practitioner of the twentieth century, Brecht made equally significant contributions to dramaturgy and theatrical production, the latter particularly through the seismic impact of the tours undertaken by the Berliner Ensemble—the post-war theatre company operated by Brecht and his wife and long-time collaborator, the actress Helene Weigel—with its internationally acclaimed productions.[1] From his late twenties Brecht remained a life-long committed Marxist who, in developing the combined theory and practice of his 'epic theatre', synthesized and extended the experiments of Erwin Piscator and Vsevolod Meyerhold to explore the theatre as a forum for political ideas and the creation of a critical aesthetics of dialectical materialism. Brecht's modernist concern with drama-as-a-medium led to his refinement of the 'epic form' of the drama. This dramatic form is related to similar modernist innovations in other arts, including the strategy of divergent chapters in James Joyce's novel Ulysses, Sergei Eisenstein's evolution of a constructivist 'montage' in the cinema, and Picasso's introduction of cubist 'collage' in the visual arts.[2] In contrast to many other avant-garde approaches, however, Brecht had no desire to destroy art as an institution; rather, he hoped to 're-function' the theatre to <b>...</b>

Bertolt Brecht's Exception & The Rule

A filmed version of the Brecht play. Produced for a theatrical staging of 3 one acts with the Liminal and Catamount performance groups. The two "live ensembles" went first. My filmed version was the third and final piece. Great review here - escapedfromla.com - There were also some hilarious reviews from newspaper critics that I can only assume had never read Brecht. (or anything else that might not have been what it seemed on the surface) For example one of them took me seriously (and put it in print) when I said I'd never read the play. Perhaps not the best reviewer to send to an emotionally distancing teaching play brimming over with sarcasm and dry humor? Also, one of the more 'serious' thespians involved mentioned to me afterwards that I was hateful. I offered him a hug but he refused. I let it go without asking if he would prefer spooning on the floor. Just didn't seem like he was ready for me to reach out, if you know what I mean. Another actor has never spoken with me again. Walked past me so fast I couldn't even try the hug offer thingy. Might not of helped either. So perhaps we all reached the best outcome imaginable. Humor and sarcasm are not for everyone after all. I love this play. And it sincerely thrills me when people enjoy this interpretation of it.

Bertolt Brecht "An die Nachgeborenen" - Autorenlesung

Rezitation: Bertolt Brecht (Aufnahme 1953) Ein seltenes., sehr wertvolles Tondokument. Galileo (1975) - Joseph Losey (1)

This bio-film is based on Bertold Brecht's play about Galileo Galilei, the 17th century Italian who laid the foundations of modern science. Galileo made himself one of the world's first telescopes and discovered the moons of Jupiter. He supported Copernicus' theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun. This brought him in conflict with the Catholic Church. By threatening him with torture, the Church forced him to recant his views in front of a tribunal, and sentenced him to house arrest. However, Galileo's trials and theories inspired others like Newton and Kepler to prove that the Earth was not the centre of the Universe. Some years ago, the Pope accepted that Earth does revolve around the Sun and issued a rare apology for what the Church had done to Galileo, ie, the Catholic Church recanted. Haiti, Hollywood, Colia Clark & Brecht Forum 7.16.09

Starts with a roll-in of an old travel trailer of Haiti so I call it Hait as Hollywood sees it. Hait is little understood by Americans because its story hides the wealth of the country that has been denied to its people. Last July '09 Joe Friendly was not able to accommodate Colia Clark who had an "in" with union leaders from the Caribbean. So Paula Gloria had the honor to meet FIgnole Saint-Cyr of the Autonomous Workers Confederation of Haiti, Elie Domota, Spokesperson of LKP, General Secretary of Union of Guadeloupean Workers, Professor Raymond Gama and Professor Yarima Bonilla. Colia Clark, long time activist from her student days pushing Martin Luther King "farther down the rabbit hole" of civil rights stands in as host for an episode of Paula's show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network. :earn how the island of Guadeloupe was shut down for 44 days and great concessions including a pay raise of $250/mth for the average worker were achieved.
