"It may have looked like an out-of-this-world blast, but authorities say a mysterious glow that lit up the early-morning sky in Bridgewater today was no cause for alarm. Some county and Bridgewater officials believe that transformer fires caused by heavy rain may have played a part in the freakish light show, although they had no definitive answers about the source of the lights. Shortly after midnight, several Bridgewater residents reported seeing a pulsating glow in the distance that changed colors, similar to the aurora borealis. They said the lights appeared to come from the northern part of the township. "The sky lit up like pure daylight," said 87-year-old Joseph Wing, who lives on Foothill Road. "This was unlike anything I've ever seen." Wing said he first wondered if an explosion was responsible, but he didn't hear a blast or feel an impact that matched the intensity of the lights. "La belle vie", a melody composed in 1962 by French singer-songwriter/actor Sacha Distel, became a jazz standard in 1963, when Tony Bennett recorded an English version "The Good Life", and scored a hit. In 1973 the song got French lyrics, for an interpretation by Sacha Distel himself. On her 2005 album "J'ai Deux Amours", full of French classics, Dee Dee Bridgewater recorded this bilingual, wonderful interpretation, pouring the very best out of the song. The clay that is used to make your favourite pieces of Emma Bridgewater pottery will have travelled from Wales, Cornwall and Staffordshire. It is mixed up in huge quantities in the factory, in a machine rather like a giant food processor, and the slip casting technique that is used to create our beautiful shapes is time consuming and complicated. Bigger shapes take longer to cast than the smaller shapes, so casting a teapot is a more time consuming process than casting a baby mug, for example. The Enterprise of Brockton, Mass. www.enterprisenews.com WEST BRIDGEWATER — A candy factory operating out of a church basement in a residential neighborhood could soon be moving to bigger digs in an industrial plant. David McCarthy, 51, sole proprietor of Hill-Top Candy Kitchen, will appear before the Zoning Board of Appeals tonight (tuesday) to seek a special permit to relocate the candy-making business from an old church at 24 Sunset Ave. to a plant at 56 Manley St. Taffy-making is a simple process, McCarthy said. "It's something that you could actually do at home in your own kitchen," he said. "We're only doing it at a higher volume." Here's the process: A batch of corn syrup and sugar is cooked for about 10 minutes in a copper pot at about 250 degrees. The mixture is poured onto a cooling table, where flavoring and coloring are added. As it cools, the batch is stretched on a pulling machine to aerate and cool it off. From there, the confection is sent to a 1907 "kiss" machine, where it is stretched, cut, wrapped and dropped into a bucket. In business since 1946, Hill-Top today makes about 22 batches, or about 1000 pounds, of taffy a day. The company makes about 40 different flavors of taffy, including cookie dough and cinnamon bun, McCarthy said. A larger scale kitchen can produce almost 10 times as much taffy, but McCarthy said he relies on candy-makers Jose Torres and Ernie Johnson, both with 20 years of experience.
