Composed by Thomas Arne in 1740 this tune was originally part of a "masque", a baroque courtly festivity somewhere between an opera and a costume-ball, about Alfred the Great, but soon developed an independent life of its own. Transmission Date: BBC FOUR FRIDAY 16th OCTOBER AT 9PM In the late Seventies small pockets of electronic artists such as The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard to dream of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain. Gary Numan's 1979 appearance on Top Of The Pops heralded the invention of synthpop, which would provide the soundtrack as Britain entered a new, ruthless era in the Eighties. Depeche Mode, four lads from Basildon, came to embody the new sound, while post-punk bands such as Ultravox, Soft Cell, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and Yazoo took the synth from the pages of the NME and onto the front cover of Smash Hits. By 1983 the Pet Shop Boys and New Order were pointing to where the future of electronic music lay in dance. Contributors to Synth Britannia include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant.

Longboarding Races, Britannia Classic 2011
UNKLE.ca is leading the charge to bring downhill skateboarding to an elite level. Updating the name from Gold Rush to the Britannia Classic for 2011, UNKLE put on a premier event in 2011 and saw some of the best racers from around the world fly into British Columbia to attend. Rayne not only sponsored the event, but had a huge team out to raise the stoke. Watch for Robin Sandberg, Micah Gutierrez, Jose Guzman, Cameron Kite, Michael Bowditch, Mike Slota, Spencer Smith, Nick Jean, Mike Benda, Cameron Frazier, Jake Fast, Cam McQueen, Graeme Hystad, Graham Buksa and of course Kevin Reimer. Rayne Team Rider Spencer Smith took the Juniour podium for a second place finish. Kevin 'K-Rimes' Reimer was a favorite to win the Open after back-to-back Danger Bay X and Jakes Rash victories, but suffered an ankle injury mid-race and was rushed to hospital. He's on the mend and will be back bombing your local hills soon. Congrats Spencer!! Get well Kevin!!

Last Night of the Proms - Rule, Britannia!
The stirring British anthem Rule, Britannia! as performed at the annual Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Though the lyrics are older, the song appeared in Britain in the 1740s and has been performed, with modifications, ever since. It is still sung by patriotic British crowds at sporting events and the like. There are elements of patriotic fervour, optimism and gloating in the lyrics of Rule, Britannia! It emerged at a time when the British empire was increasing in size, its naval power was in ascension, and military campaigns against its arch-rival France were more successful than not. Britons - or at least their middle- and upper-classes - also considered themselves the freest people in Europe, sentiments that are echoed in the stirring crescendo "Britons never never never will be slaves!" By implication it mocks the absolutist monarchies of France, Spain, Austria and Russia, whose kings and emperors were not constrained by parliaments and whose citizens enjoyed no voting rights. The great freedom of Britons in the 1700s was, of course, only comparative: voting rights and political representation were still based on land and wealth. Britannia Campus Recruitment Film 2008
This film was WIP for almost 6 months. It started of with the then VP, HR Mr.Ramesh Shankar when he said "Britannia is where we do and learn." It slowly started to appear in various parts of our own lives, the escalator sequence is my favourite and was the first thought. It was my wife, Vrinda's observation.The first draft was in English, then Kavita Rayirath came in with Hindi and added some very college like sequences. Thats when it started looking different. Was not completely thrilled with the output. Felt, the cinematography could have been a little more voyeuristic to lend credibility. In fact in retrospect there are many more sequences that one could have added and the film could have been much tighter. The film seems to have worked very well for Britannia though. We are immensely grateful to St.Josephs College of Commerce, my Alma Mater for giving us unconditional support to shoot this film. Thanks to Fr.Daniel and his team.

The Britannia Banker - Steam on the Lickey Incline - LMS 6201 Princess Elizabeth & GWR 9600 Banker
THE BRITANNIA BANKER - With 40285lb of Tractive Effort, was there any need for LMS Princess Class 8P 4-6-2 no 6201 Princess Elizabeth to require the banking assistance of GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT no 9600? Either way, we filmed the tour here from "Half way foot crossing" on the "correct" side of the fence, traveling up the famous 2 mile long Lickey Incline which is a 1 in 37 graident. This tour was origionally set for 70013 Oliver Cromwell, but due to a fault being found just 2 weeks prior to the tour, Vintage Trains sourced a new locomotive, that being 6201 Princess Elizabeth. Firstly in this video, we witness our Lickey Banker no 9600 travelling light down the incline to Bromsgrove, where she will be added to the tour. In the second shot, we see everybodys fear - the "down" signal changing to Green. Luckily with prior knowledge of the train traveling down, I knew we would get a cross over, before our steam charter passed us, as the Cross Country 170 was calling at Bromsgrove (just out of sight). Although this is my second time to the foot crossing, this was the first time i've seen Steam on the Lickey, and what a fantastic first. Many thanks to everybody who paid to travel on this fantastic tour to make it happen, and also to AY67 & MG06ZT (AKA XC Hoover) for the company.
