Saint Helena/British overseas territory/the South Atlantic Ocean

Saint Helena - named after St Helena of Constantinople, is an island of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha[2] which also includes Ascension Island and the islands of Tristan da Cunha. Saint Helena measures about 16 by 8 kilometres (10 by 5 mi) and has a population of 4255 (2008 census). The island has a history of over 500 years since it was first discovered as an uninhabited island by the Portuguese in 1502. Britain's second oldest remaining colony (after Bermuda), Saint Helena is one of the most isolated islands in the world and was for several centuries of vital strategic importance to ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa. For several centuries, the British used the island as a place of exile, most notably for Napoleon Bonaparte, Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo and over 5000 Boer prisoners. The Development and Economic Planning Department, which still operates, was formed in 1988 to contribute to raising the living standards of the people of St Helena. In 1989, Prince Andrew launched the replacement RMS St Helena to serve the island; the vessel was specially built for the CardiffCape Town route and features a mixed cargo/passenger layout. The St Helena Constitution took effect in 1989 and provided that the island would be governed by a Governor and Commander-in-Chief, and an elected Executive and Legislative Council. In 2002, the British Overseas Territories Act ...

British Overseas Territories Law

BOOK REVIEW BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORIES LAW By Ian Hendry and Susan Dickson ISBN: 978-1-84946-019- 4 Hart Publishing www.hartpub.co.uk AT LAST! -- THE UP TO DATE BOOK ON THE LAW OF BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORIES -- AND THE FIRST IN FORTY-FOUR YEARS! An Appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor The gradual disappearance of the British Empire and its subsequent metamorphosis into a Commonwealth of Nations continues generally to be a topic of interest, not just to historians, but for many members of the public at large and especially to lawyers. We were surprised therefore to read in the Foreword to this scholarly and very readable work from Hart Publishing, that it's the first study in 44 years on the topic of law in this specific area; that is, the law and practice relating to British Overseas Territories. As the learned and expert authors, Hendry and Dickson, point out, the great authority on this subject was Sir Kenneth Roberts-Wray's 'Commonwealth and Colonial Law' published in 1966. As its worthy successor, 'British Overseas Territories Law' contributes a much needed fresh and topical examination of this somewhat overlooked area of law. The old Empire is consigned to history, of course, but there are still fourteen British Overseas Territories out there: not just obscure and remote ones like Tristan da Cunha, Pitcairn and South Georgia, (not to mention a large chunk of the Antarctic), but densely populated, thriving territories with dynamic economies ...

The Cayman Islands /The British overseas territory in the Caribbean Sea

The Cayman Islands is a British overseas territory located in the western Caribbean Sea. The territory comprises the islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman, located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica. The territory was once a major offshore financial centre in the Caribbean. The Cayman Islands were sighted by Christopher Columbus, on 10 May 1503 on his fourth and final voyage to the New World. He named them Las Tortugas after the numerous sea turtles there. The first recorded English visitor to the islands was Sir Francis Drake, who landed there in 1586 and named them the Cayman Islands after caiman, the Neo-Taino nations' term for alligator. The first recorded permanent inhabitant of the Cayman Islands, Isaac Bodden, was born on Grand Cayman around 1661. He was the grandson of the original settler named Bodden who was probably one of Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at the taking of Jamaica in 1655. The Cayman Islands remained largely uninhabited until the 17th century. A variety of people settled on the islands, including pirates, refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, shipwrecked sailors, deserters from Oliver Cromwell's army in Jamaica, and slaves. The majority of Caymanians are of African and British descent, with considerable interracial mixing. Great Britain took formal control of the Cayman Islands, along with Jamaica, under the Treaty of Madrid in 1670. Following several unsuccessful attempts, permanent settlement of the islands began in the 1730s ...

Bermuda

Bermuda is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. Located off the east coast of the United States, its nearest landmass is Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, about 1030 kilometres (640 mi) to the west-northwest. It is about 1373 kilometres (853 mi) south of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and 1770 kilometres (1100 mi) northeast of Miami, Florida. Its capital city is Hamilton. Bermuda was discovered in 1505 by Spanish navigator Juan de Bermúdez (who claimed to only find the island inhabited with pigs) after whom the islands are named, who claimed it for the Spanish Empire. Unoccupied, the island was settled by England in 1609, making it the oldest and most populous remaining British overseas territory. Its first capital, St George's, was established in 1612 and is the oldest continuously inhabited English town in the Americas. Bermuda has an affluent economy, with finance as its largest sector followed by tourism. In 2005, Bermuda was even claimed to have the world's highest GDP per capita, yet these statistics are hard to verify as Bermuda is not classified as a country but rather as a territory of the UK It has a subtropical climate. For a place of such small size, Bermuda is the location for a considerably high number of shipwrecks. ( source Wikipedia )

Ascension Island/ British overseas territory

Ascension Island / the British South Atlantic territoriesis an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1600 kilometres (994 mi) from the coast of Africa, and 2250 kilometres (1398 mi) from the coast of South America which is roughly midway between the horn of South America and Africa. It is politically organized and governed as part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha[1] from the capital Saint Helena, which is 1287 kilometres (800 mi) to the southeast and the protectorate also includes the "remotest populated archipelago" on earth, the sparsely populated Tristan da Cunha archipelago some thirty-degrees farther south — about half the way to the Antarctic circle. The Island is named after the day of its recorded discovery, Ascension Day and is located about as far south of the equator as tropical Venezuela is to its north. Historically, it has played a role as an important safe haven and coaling station to mariners and for commercial airliners during the days of international air travel by flying boats and during World War II was an important naval and air station especially providing antisubmarine warfare bases in the Battle of the Atlantic and throughout the war.Ascension Island was garrisoned by the British Royal Navy on 22 October 1815. Despite its small size there is a lot to do on the island. There are numerous walks, the opportunity to go scuba diving, and play a wide variety ...

Anguilla / The British overseas territory in the Caribbean

Anguilla is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It consists of the main island of Anguilla itself, approximately 26 km (16 mi) long by 5 km (3.1 mi) wide at its widest point, together with a number of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population. The island's capital is The Valley. The total land area of the territory is 91 km2 (35 sq mi),with a population of approximately 13500 (2006 estimate). Anguilla was first settled by Amerindian tribes who migrated from South America. The earliest Amerindian artifacts found on Anguilla have been dated to around 1300 BC, and remains of settlements date from 600 AD.The date of European discovery is uncertain: some sources claim that Columbus sighted the island in 1493, while others state that the island was first discovered by the French in 1564 or 1565.The name Anguilla derives from the word for "eel" in any of various Romance languages (modern Spanish: anguila; French: anguille; Italian: anguilla), probably chosen because of the island's eel-like shape. Anguilla was first colonised by English settlers from Saint Kitts, beginning in 1650.The French temporarily overtook the island in 1666 but under the Treaty of Breda it was returned to English control. Other early arrivals included Europeans from Antigua and Barbados. It is likely that some of these early Europeans brought enslaved Africans with them. Historians confirm that African ...

Montserrat / British overseas territory

Montserrat / British overseas territory is located in the Leeward Islands, part of the chain of islands called the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It measures approximately 16 km (10 miles) long and 11 km (7 miles) wide, giving 40 kilometres (25 mi) of coastline.[3] Christopher Columbus gave Montserrat its name on his second voyage to the New World in 1493, after Montserrat mountain located in Catalonia, Spain. Montserrat is nicknamed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish descent of its inhabitants. Its Georgian era capital city of Plymouth was destroyed and two-thirds of the island's population were forced to flee abroad by an eruption of the previously dormant Soufriere Hills volcano that began on July 18, 1995.The eruption continues today on a much reduced scale, the damage being confined to the areas around Plymouth including its docking facilities and the former WH Bramble Airport. An exclusion zone extending from the south coast of the island north to parts of the Belham Valley has been imposed because of an increase in the size of the existing volcanic dome. Visitors are no longer permitted entry into Plymouth. The village of Brades currently serves as the temporary centre of government while construction proceeds on a new town at Little Bay in the north of the island, out of reach of further volcanic activity. In July 1995, Montserrat's Soufriere Hills volcano, dormant throughout recorded history ...

Emotional return for HMS Montrose 11.05.12

Sailors of the Royal Navy frigate HMS Montrose have received an emotional welcome home at Plymouth this morning (Friday) after more than six months at sea. She sailed into Plymouth Sound, where she was greeted by a seven-gun salute from 29 Commando Royal Artillery at Plymouth Citadel. A crowd of 700 cheering families and friends were waiting on the jetty with the Royal Marine Band. HMS Montrose has been deployed as the Atlantic Patrol Task South ship, protecting and promoting British interests in the South Atlantic Ocean. She has also been providing reassurance to the inhabitants of the most far flung British overseas territories. The ship's commanding officer Commander Jonathan Lett said: "Having navigated over 35000 nautical miles, patrolled in three oceans, visited five continents and six British Overseas Territories there is a real sense of achievement amongst the ship's company. "From the frozen wastes of the South Sandwich Islands to the tropical paradise of Bermuda we have faced some significant challenges but the team can be justifiably proud of a job well done. "My ship's company are clearly glad to be home and back with their families after six and half months away." HMS Montrose will now undergo intensive maintenance before returning to operations later this year.

Mighty pillar, Rock of splendour, Guardian of the sea, Port of hope in times of need, Rich in history. Gibraltar, Gibraltar, The Rock on which I stand, May you be forever free, Gibraltar my own land. God give grace to this our homeland, Help us to live as one, Strong in freedom, Truth and justice, Let this be our song. Anthem of the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory located in the western Caribbean Sea. Beloved Isle Cayman is the official national song of the Cayman Islands. As a British Overseas Territory, the official national anthem is still God Save the Queen. Lyrics and music: Leila Ross-Shier, 1930. Lyrics: O land of soft, fresh breezes And verdant trees so fair, With the Creator's glory Reflected ev'rywhere, O sea of palest em'rald, Merging to darkest blue, Whene'er my thoughts fly Godward, I always think of you. Chorus: Dear, verdant island, set in blue Caribbean Sea, I'm coming, coming very soon, O beauteous isle, to thee. Although I wandered far, My heart enshrines thee yet. Homeland, fair Cayman Isle, I cannot thee forget. Away from noise of cities, Their fret and carking care, With moonbeams' soft caresses, Unchecked by garish glare, Thy fruit with rarest juices, Abundant, rich and free, When sweet church bells are chiming, My fond heart yearns for thee. (Chorus) When tired of all excitement And glam'rous worldly care, How sweet thy shores to reach And find a welcome there, And when comes on the season Of peace, goodwill to man, Tis then I love thee best of all, Beloved Isle Cayman.

My Country

Wikipedia says, Argentina (ɑrdʒənˈtiːnə), officially the Argentine Republic (Spanish: República Argentina [reˈpuβlika arxenˈtina]), is the second largest country in South America by land area, after Brazil. It is constituted as a federation of 23 provinces and an autonomous city, Buenos Aires. It is the eighth-largest country in the world by land area and the largest among Spanish-speaking nations. Argentina's continental area is between the Andes mountain range in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. It borders Paraguay and Bolivia to the north, Brazil and Uruguay to the northeast, and Chile to the west and south. Argentine claims over Antarctica, as well as overlapping claims made by Chile and the United Kingdom, are suspended by the Antarctic Treaty of 1961. Argentina also claims the Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which are administered by the United Kingdom as British Overseas Territories. A recognised middle power, Argentina is Latin America's third-largest economy, with a "very high" rating on the Human development index. Within Latin America, Argentina has the fifth highest nominal GDP per capita and the highest in purchasing power terms. Analysts have argued that the country has a "foundation for future growth due to its market size, levels of foreign direct investment, and percentage of high-tech exports as share of total manufactured goods", and it is classed by investors as an emerging ...

Alex Ohan; Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located about 250 nautical miles from the coast of mainland South America. The archipelago consists of East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 lesser islands. The capital, Stanley, is on East Falkland. The islands are an internally self-governing British Overseas Territory, with the United Kingdom responsible for defence and foreign affairs. Ever since the re-establishment of British rule in 1833, Argentina has claimed sovereignty. In pursuit of this claim, which is rejected by the islanders, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982. This precipitated the two-month-long undeclared Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom and resulted in the defeat and withdrawal of the Argentine forces. It is currently on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories.

George Galloway rants angrily about Falkland Wars, 30 years on...

George Galloway will be talking to Patrick Mercer on the 30th anniversary of the Falkland Wars which saw the British succeed and the Argentine junta at the time basically crumble into dust. Galloway has stated that he fully supported the war but could have handled the execution a bit better than the Iron Lady herself. George Galloway will also speak to Paul McKeever the Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales on Prime Minister David Cameron's plans to put a US-style drunk tank for those who have had a glass too many. George Galloway will speak to British Humanist Association trustee David Pollock on secularism or the perceived militant secularism in the UK. Galloway will also speak to Jude Rogers on the Welsh language and whether or not to preserve it with taxpayers money. Galloway begins the show with an angry rant about the Falkland Islands, whether to give it back to the now-democratic Argentina and repatriate the resident back to the UK or not. Originally broadcasted on talkSPORT February 17th 2012.

George Galloway Vs 4 callers on the Falkland Islands (And the 1982 war)

George Galloway takes on 4 idiots who basically are defending the Falkland Wars and defending British sovereignty over the islands. None of the callers have managed to deliver a credible punch to the debate. The 1st caller thinks there are good parts in certains colonialism like the Falkland Islands but agrees with Galloway on his stance on the Iraq war. The caller then openly admits that the British Empire did a lot of shady things in the past to which Galloway decided to draw a veil over that conversation... The 2nd caller has believed the Falkland Islands fiasco is purely money related and considers the Falkland Islands itself to be a country of its own to which Galloway shoots down this inaccurate description. The caller then makes a poor analogy by saying how would he like it the Americans have announced that Scotland is actually a part of the US. A very, very poor analogy indeed... The 3rd caller is someone who is raised in the Falkland Islands. The caller challenges him and anyone else to go to the islands itself before making second guesses on the place, to which Galloway replies by saying it is too far away and inhospitable. Galloway challenges her by saying she can either live in the UK or keep her British passport and stay in the Falklands but don't expect to be subsidised by the UK in the name of hanging onto a piece of land 8000 miles away and there are not enough British troops to do station themselves there.
