Protesters started marching up the pedestrian walk way over the bridge while others tried to take the traffic lane. For a few minutes officers held the line and then they turned around and led the way up the traffic lane on the Brooklyn Bridge. From what I saw no police told any of the protesters to leave until they created a barricade in front of the march about halfway through the bridge. They then pulled vans and buses up to the back of the group and started arresting everyone. In total over 700 people were arrested.

In 1898, the modern City of New York was formed with the consolidation of Brooklyn (until then an independent city), Manhattan and outlying areas. About 700 people from the Occupy Wall Street protest movement,including child have been arrested on New York City's Brooklyn Bridge. Those arrested were part of a larger group crossing the bridge from Manhattan, where they have been camped out near Wall Street for two weeks. The New York City police department say that they began arresting people because they had spilled from the pedestrian section of the bridge onto the roadway and were blocking traffic. Protesters claim they were led onto the road by police and essentially trapped so they could be arrested. The loosely-organised group is protesting against corporate greed. A emotionally disturbed young man who was dangling from the Brooklyn Bridge was pulled to safety by police officers Sunday afternoon May 30 2011, as scores of people watched from the pedestrian walkway, from the street below and from cars on the bridge that had been halted during the rescue. When the officers arrived, the man, wearing a gray shirt and dark pants, was holding on to a railing on the southeast end of the bridge near the ramp to Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn. One foot was on a narrow ledge; the other hung in the air. Many feet below was an empty parking lot. Dozens of police officers and firefighters, along with emergency vehicles, came onto the bridge and into the parking lot about 4:30 pm The man, whose identity was not immediately known, had both hands on the railing, but he was below eye level of the officers who had carefully approached him.
