One day, while walking along the shore, the kupuna looked down the beach, and saw a gracefully dancing human figure. The kupuna wondered out loud, "Who would so joyfully greet this day with hula?" and began to walk faster to catch up. Getting closer, the kupuna saw that the dancer was a keiki (child), who was not dancing at all. The keiki was reaching down to the sand to pick up something, and was very gently throwing it into the sea. The kupuna called out to the keiki, "Aloha! What are you doing?" The keiki paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the sea." Surprised, the kupuna sputtered, "I...I guess I should have asked, WHY are you throwing starfish into the sea?" Israel "IZ" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kaˌmakaˌʋiwoˈʔole]; May 20, 1959 -- June 26, 1997) was an American musician. He became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of "Over the Rainbow" and his cover of Louis Armstrong's classic "What a Wonderful World" was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials. Through his ukulele playing and incorporation of other genres (such as jazz and reggae), Kamakawiwoʻole remains one of the major influences in Hawaiian music. Kamakawiwoʻole was born at Kuakini Hospital in Honolulu to Henry Kaleialoha Naniwa Kamakawiwoʻole, Jr., and Evangeline Leinani Kamakawiwoʻole. He was raised in the community of Kaimuki, where his parents had met and married. Israel Kamakawiwi'ole was one of the most beloved singer songwriter musician philosophers in Hawaii's history. Despite his size, clearly out of control in later years eventually leading to his death, he was a true legend and icon of Hawaiian music. His songs inspired people of all ages, and many kids headed for trouble looked to Brother Iz as role model. Kamakawiwi'ole did have some runins as a youth, which made his later example all the more meaningful, not just for young, but people in all walks of life and ages. One of his most inspirational messages was "When you think no can, can." Which was his way of saying just when things seem toughest, there is still hope if you hold on and have faith. Music by Brother Iz- "Hele onto Kauai" Our son, Alex, who is Hapa Haole, just graduated kindergarten. Normally, we surf out of Santa Cruz, but we take a two week surf trip to Hawaii each summer. For the past three years, Alex has been surfing tandem with his father on an 11-foot board. Or, occasionally, we'd push him into a small wave on his own, and let him ride to the beach on his belly. But, we've never truly let him surf "on his own." We told him he had to become a truly strong swimmer before he was allowed to ride a board on his own. Alex has been taking daily swim lessons after school with a terrific swim coach. (Two of his former students went on to become Olympians.) We have no Olympic aspirations for Alex, but we're glad the guy is a terrific swim coach. If you look carefully in the video, you can see Alex is still wearing a life vest over his shortie suit. Why? Longboards are heavy, (up to 30+ pounds), and if it hits you in the skull the right way, it can knock you out. And, unconscious, all those swim lessons really aren't going to help much... But, Alex is very confident in the water now. He is excellent physical shape, and a very strong paddler. All that swimming really developed his upper body so he can paddle a surf board with ease. But, everything came together. Alex had a terrific time learning to surf in Hanalei Bay this year. It was more crowded than last year. A summer camp for the local kids was going on at the time, so the water was just inundated <b>...</b>

I enter Nebraska from Iowa in Sioux City. The Missouri River is flooding and I choose this route because many of the other bridges are closed further up the river. I travel to Ponca and spend the night at Ponca State Park. From there I jump on HWY 20 and travel west, spending the night in Plainview NE and Oneill NE where SummerFest was happening.
