Operation castle : Romeo 11 Mt

From the commander's report film archive Romeo was the second test from the operation castle.

Operation Grapple Y : largest britsh nuclear test (3 Mt)

Scientists hoped a more efficient thermonuclear bomb based on the successful Grapple X design. Like Grapple X, only one detonation was conducted during Grapple Y. The bomb was detonated off Christmas Island on 28 April 1958. Yield : 3 Megatons this is the largest British detonation ever conducted .

Operation Grapple X

Grapple X was an UK hydrogen bomb Grapple X was dropped and detonated over the southern end of Christmas Island on 8 November 1957.His yield was approximaively 1.8 megatons. This was close to being the real hydrogen bomb Britain wanted, but used a relatively large quantity of (expensive) highly enriched uranium.
RDS 37 nuclear test 1955

On 22 November 1955 the USSR conducted its first test of a multi-stage thermonuclear device. The device, the RDS-37, was designed as a nuclear gravity bomb with a full yield of about 3 megatons. The test version was modified to reduce the yield to an expected 1.45 megatons, to reduce the risk to the local population. It was airdropped from a Tupolev-95 bomber over Technical Area Sh ("Ground Zero") at the Semipalatinsk Test Site in Kazakhstan. It detonated with a yield of 1.6 megatons at altitude of 1550 meters. Civilians in nearby villages had been warned as a precaution, but one child who ran back into a house immediately after the detonation was killed when the blast wave arrived and caused the roof to collapse.

operation dominic

operation dominic: bluestone Bluestone was a parachute retarded test of the LRL XW-56X2 Prime device using a Mk-36 bomb case. A new Strategic Air Command crew dropped the device on its first drop mission after receiving extensive training at Kirtland Air Force base. The device was similar to that tested during Swanee and Arkansas. The test proved to be very successful, achieving the full design yield for the W-56 warhead. A 4.96 kt/kg yield-to-weight ratio, the highest during Operation Dominic, was achieved. The mushroom cloud rose to an altitude of 58000 feet. Eight B-57 aircraft sampled the cloud at altitudes ranging from 47000 to 61000 feet. A rocket used for device debris collection was fired at H+10 minutes and was later recovered by Air Force helicopters.

Operation Grapple Z (flagpole 1.2 Mt)

Grapple Z was conducted at Christmas Island in 1958. This was a four-shot series. Here is the shot, Flagpole, was airdropped over Christmas Island on 2 September 1958. This is smaller version of grapple Y with a yield of 1.2 Mt.

This is a clip of the Hydrogen Bomb test at Enewetak Atoll on November 1, 1952, and the first time one was exploded. The fireball was big enough to cover most of Manhattan Island. This clip show more of the aftermath of the nuclear cloud than do most films.
