The DL: The ABBA Curse

The DL's favorite drummer, Ola Brunkert , died this past weekend. "Who is Ola Brunkert?" you ask. Hey, if you have ever had your huevos rattled by the rhythm section on ABBA's 'Fernando,' then you can thank the drum stylings of the Brunkanator. "No big loss," you say. Well, you cold-hearted bastards, perhaps there's more to ABBA than just gilded locks and dancing queens. Thankfully, the investigative team of The Steaming Truth has brought you this expose on ABBA's sordid history. Let's just say 'Mama Mia' isn't the only blood on their hands.

Artist: Mads Vinding Group (Denmark) - Mads Vinding (acoustic guitar and Bass) - Kjell Öhman (all Keyboards, including synthesizers) - Ola Brunkert (Drums) - Jan Schaffer (Guitar) Album: Danish Design (1974) Song: Funky But... Long regarded as one Europe's finest jazz bassists, the Danish Vinding has played with such stars as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Gary Burton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bob Brookmeyer, among others. Vinding taught himself to play, and by the age of 16 was performing professionally. He served as the house bassist at the Montmartre night club in Copenhagen, where he accompanied many famous visiting American musicians. He began recording as a sideman in the late '60s. In 1974, he recorded with bebop pianist Duke Jordan. That year he also led a date that produced the album Danish Design on the Sonet label. Vinding played in the Radioens Big Band from 1978 and with Ernie Wilkins' Almost Big Band from 1980. During the '80s, he worked and recorded with pianist Kenny Drew and flugelhornist Art Farmer, pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist Doug Raney, and many others. With drummer Billy Hart, Vinding was a member of a Hank Jones-led group called the Great Jazz Trio. The group released several albums' worth of material in the late '80s and early '90s. Vinding was extremely active during the '90s, recording with such musicians as saxophonist Jesper Thilo, pianist Martial Solal, and many others. ABBA - Me and I (live Sweden '81)

Dick Cavett meets ABBA was a TV special featuring ABBA, recorded in 1981, and hosted by American TV talk show host Dick Cavett. It was a joint production between Polar Music (ABBA's record label), Sveriges Television (SVT) and ZDF (Second German Television). The show featured a mini-concert, in which ABBA performed 9 songs, 5 of which were sung live for the only time. This was ABBA's last concert. (Wikipedia) According to a photo in the book "From ABBA to Mamma Mia!" by Carl Magnus Palm and Anders Hanser, "Andante, Andante" was included in the set list (in Björn's handwriting) although there's no hard evidence that it was actually performed or recorded. (Oh how wonderful wouldn't that be, if a clip of them singing "Andante..." live, surfaced!) Backing musicians were:- Lasse Wellander, Mats Ronander and Björn Ulvaeus on guitars Ola Brunkert on drums Rutger Gunnarsson on bass Benny Andersson and Anders Eljas on keyboards and Åke Sundqvist on percussion Backing vocals provided by: Tomas Ledin, Lisa Öhman & Lena Ericsson. (abbaontv.com) Sometimes when I'm mad There's a part of me that seems to be a little sad Sometimes when I scream There's a voice in me that says, "You shouldn't be so mean" Oh no, oh no Part of me is acting while the other stands beside Yes, I am to myself what Jekyll must have been to Hyde We're like sun and rainy weather Sometimes we're a hit together Me and I Gloomy moods and inspiration We're a funny combination Me and II don't think I'm different or in ...

"Första Valsen" & "I Fatimas Hand" by Finn Sjöberg (Sweden, 1978)

www.facebook.com Member of band "Kvartetten Som Sprängde" I could't found english review... Abba - On And On And On

This video is for a very brave friend in Australia who has recently had a major operation. Abba songs have always been inspirational and they were clearly having fun here! Abba performed this rocking version of On And On And On for Show Express, a well known West German tv show. It was recorded in Stockholm on November 27th 1980, and broadcast live by satellite link to West German tv. It was originally planned for Abba to record the show in Germany. This trip was cancelled after kidnap threats against the group were received in an anonymous letter 2 weeks earlier. Everyone in the group was immediately put under police protection and advised to stay in Sweden. Rather than missing out, Show Express came to Abba instead! Their producers hired the SVT studios in Stockholm and flew over the tv crew, technicians and even the Show Express set from Germany to Stockholm. The studio building entrances were watched by ten policemen during the recording, while guard dogs searched the premises. Guests had to pass through 3 control stations before they were let into the building and rehearsals began at 3pm. The live link to Show Express in Germany was kept secret until Abba's slot commenced at 8.40pm, when presenter Michael Schanze interviewed Bjorn in German. Twenty minutes later the show was over and the German audience went wild. Songs performed to playback for the show were The Winner Takes It All, Super Trouper and On And On And On. The backing musicians were Mats Ronander (guitar ...
