The design is just so simple and yet the illusion is so amazing. This illusion has been around for a long time but always in the form of an image. It was created by MIT professor Edward H. Adelson. I wanted to take it from a flat piece of paper and turn it into a real, life sized illusion that I could interact with to demonstrate the effect. The illusion works because of the "shadow" that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesnt exist, you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow. I wanted to try and different version by using the black lights and also to add a little production value instead of just simply showing the effect. The effect works by using a formula that provides the specific length for each string. When all of the pendulums are started at once the patterns will start to form. The pattern resets after about 1 minute. I glued white poster board on the sides of the nuts and used a black light, causing the white to glow. I tape the templates to poster board then cut with a hobby knife. I fold the poster board then use scotch tape to hold them together. The templates are not 100% perfect. So if you build this model, you might have to squish the columns a little or move the pieces a little to get it to look just right. These are my favorite illusions. From one angle everything looks perfectly normally until you see the balls rolling uphill. When you change the angle of the camera you see that the ramps are not as they appeared. They are actually slanting downhill instead of uphill. It's all about the perspective of course. All of the work for the illusion is performed in a 3D program. The process to create these illusions is long and difficult. I basically create the design the way it should appear and then create a duplicate of the design that will be the actual physical copy. I manipulate the duplicate in the 3D program so that the ramps ultimately slant down but still match the original layer of the ramps that are aiming up. Once I've created the ramps that slant down, I flatten the shapes, print them out, cut, fold and tape. The camera must be set up in the same position that the camera <b>...</b>

Some may not consider this an illusion. Heres the definition of illusion: something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. The idea for this started when I was editing the behind the scenes footage for the Fire Illusion video. I sped up the footage of me blowing out the candles and it looked really cool to see the candles going from being lit to unlit so quickly ..and it hit me that the candles could be used as pixels. I spent a couple of weeks thinking about how involved it would be to do. My initial goal was to animate classic videos games, such as tetris, pong, pac-man and mario bros. After testing I realized mario bro's would be too hard and I gave up. I stuck with tetris, pong and pac-man but since those didnt take up much time I decided to include a few random shapes. The initial goal was to light each candle individually and blow it out according to the required movements of each shape. I soon realized that it was just not going to be practical. The main problem was keeping the flame consistent on the candles. Some candles would burn perfectly. Others would burn out quickly. I decided to take a different approach. I took a picture of all the candles unlit ..and then lit all the candles ..and took a picture of that. I know that some people will consider that <b>...</b>

These animations use the same concept as my other videos. The only difference is, the images in this video are on a screen instead of printed on a piece of paper. Ever since I first created my first animated optical illusion years ago I have always wondered if the concept would work on a screen. Sure enough! It does. This took about a week to produce. Everything had to be absolutely exact for the effect to work. I used photoshop to created the 2D animations and Lightwave 3D to create the 3D animations. The illusion may look complicated but it was really very easy to make. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Details of materials and construction for Infinity Mirror Illusion The sizes and measurements i've provided may not be 100% accurate. Feel free to experiment with your own materials and measurements. I picked up all of the materials in the video from Hobby Lobby ..except for the mirrored tint. 1 - 7" Cardboard lid 1 1/2" height 1 - 9" Cardboard lid 1 1/2" height 1 - 15 bulb LED light strand 1 - 7" diameter mirror 1 - 1' X 1' 1/10" thick plexiglass or real glass (whichever you prefer -- real glass will give a cleaner result) Take the 7" Cardboard lid and mark a spot every 24 degrees on the outside rim halfway between the top and the bottom. That will create 15 marks around the lid for the LED's I used a hand drill to create the holes for the LED's. Make the holes a little smaller than the LED's so that they'll fit snug Push the LED's into the hole. Push them in far enough so that they visible from the inside. Cut the bottom of the lid out. Glue the mirror in the middle of the inside of the 9" lid. Place the 7" ring with LED's into the 9" lid. The small ring should sit directly on top of the mirror. You have to place the special magnetic disc that comes with the unit, inside of the objects you want to float. The device I'm using in this video is the Levitron Revolution. Normally you are supposed to place an object on top of the magnetic disc. Obviously you can have a lot of fun doing that and get great results but I wanted to take it a step further by hiding the disc inside what ever object I was trying to float. To see the object floating "by itself" just gives a much more dramatic feel. To float the rubiks cube, I had to drill out a hole in the cube big enough for the disc to fit in. I felt really bad destroying a rubiks cube but I thought the final result was worth it.

Even though I have seen this demonstration before, everything I see it I still can't believe it. I decided to give it a try myself and sure enough it works easily. You definitely should give it a try. It's fun to take the ruler and balance the tip on the end of your finger. Your instinct is to not want to let go because you feel like it'll fall but it doesn't. If you decided to try this trick just becareful with the hammer not to drop it on your toes or the floor. And also you will need to use a hammer that has an edge where the grip stops about halfway up. You need the edge for the string to catch on to. I wrote the song in this video. The top parts of the radio were the easiest to work on. All we had to do was spread the tape semi-evenly. When viewed from a low angle is basically looks like a solid piece. The closer we got to the bottom of the radio, the more difficult it became. Even a small 1 inch by 1 inch piece could take 20 minutes to work on. There were several points during the creation of the illusion that I was ready to give up. I did a few test shots when the radio was half finished and it just didnt seem to be working. I just about gave up on looking but decided to try one more mom and pop store. Sure enough they had the lights I was looking for. I really had no idea if I could pull this tron illusion off with x-mas lights but I had to give it a try. So I started the painstaking process of taping the x-mas lights to the wall. I was about 5 seconds from giving up. It was so difficult to get the lights to stay on the wall. They were contantly falling and changing positions. It took about 10 hours to complete the illusion. Overall, I was pleased with the results! I love this style of illusion and thought pacman would be perfect for it. This illusion uses the same concept as the rubiks cube poster. This video is not about creating a new concept, it's about a new design being applied to a concept. (Think of it like a painter using the same lighting and shading techniques for each painting he creates.) I've included links to templates so you can make this poster at home. The top link represents the left side and the bottom link represents the right. The poster will work with only 1 middle section ..but I used 2 in this video. You can use as many as you'd like. Watch as hidden animations come alive by using a specific frame rate and shutter speeds of a camera and RPM of a record player. To me this is one of the ultimate illusions. Definition of Illusion: something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. I used a Numark turntable set to 45 RPM and the camera was set to 24 FPS. The shutter speed was set to around 840. With that combination of settings a 30 frame animation would appear to stand still. I used the slider to increase / descrease rpms which caused the images to move foward or backward. The sequence of the guy jumping on the blocks was the most difficult but turned out the best, in my opinion. The images of the guy jumping is me. I recorded myself jumping in the living room then took 30 frames from that footage and traced the images in photoshop and filled with black. Then printed out the 30 images and cut each one out. I used 30 wooden blocks and glued them to a piece of construction paper then taped the images of the jumping guy to the clear sheet and aligned them with the blocks. I also love the pac-man animation. It's so simple but just has such a cool feel to see the mouth opening and closing.
