An odd and goofy singer/songwriter who didn't fit in any comfortable niche when he emerged in the late 1960s, New Orleans pianist Biff Rose was like a vaudeville entertainer reincarnated as a spacy hippie. It isn't quite accurate to call him a rock artist, but he fits in rock about as well as anywhere else. If he's remembered by rock audiences, it's because David Bowie covered a Rose song -- "Fill Your Heart" (co-written by Rose and Paul Williams), from Rose's 1968 debut album The Thorn in Mrs. Rose's Side on Hunky Dory. Bowie also covered another song from that album, "Buzz the Fuzz," in live performances (it can be heard on a 1970 bootleg), and there can be no doubt that Rose influenced Bowie's early-'70s work, particularly Hunky Dory, which owed something to Rose's early albums in both the quasi-musical piano styles and thorny-rose lyrics. www.biffrose.com

Collie Buddz burst onto the scene in 2006, after being totally unheard of before this time, unless you were from the island of Bermuda, where Collie was born and raised. It's fair to say that Collie has not always had the backing of the black community, but has stuck with it, and has pushed and pushed the boundry's of reggae music. Let's remember, Eminem was "distrusted" when he burst onto the Rap scene in 1999, and we all know where he is now! Collie has gone on to work with many US and Jamaican producers, hip hop and reggae artist's, including Movado, Busy Signal and Lil Wayne, and is now Bermuda's biggest export and has tackled the "haters" by proving that music is about music, not colour, race or creed. Although, it would be my second television appearance (the first being my debut on ESPN2 where I talked about my Jordan 2 Collaboration and commented on general sports fashion topics) I was very extremely anxious and overwhelmed. They had written the lyrics to a tune, and needed the right singer for the song. After hearing her sing as she was walking through the corridor of a studio he was also working in, she was given a demo of the track and asked to put her vocals to it. The rest as they say is history. The song was released in June 1985 and reached top ten within six weeks. SAY I'M YOUR NUMBER ONE has sold over 1 million copies worldwide. The EPONYMOUS album went gold and yielded four top ten singles, one of which was part of a movie soundtrack. Princess was in demand - appearances on "Top of the Pops", appearances on the various morning TV shows, augmented by radio and TV appearances worldwide. The band spent a couple of years gigging around the local club circuit, putting out an EP and their eponymous debut full-lenght disc on their own Que-so Records. After relocating to Denton, Texas, the group issued "Rock On Honorable Ones!!", in 1997, on local FFROE label. Two years later Bowling For Soup recorded "Let's Do It For Johnny!!", which was offered initially through the Denton-based label; the set included some early tracks, new material, the cover of Bryan Adams' "Summer Of '69" and "The Bitch Song", which got some local radio buzz and helped the band eventually land a deal with Jive Records. What a record this is!!! This is taken from the white label (a prized possession in my record box) of 89' the full release coming the following year along with her debut album 'Lalah Hathaway'. The daughter of the great Donny Hathaway, Lalah made a good impression with her debut album in 1990. She not only displayed poise, confidence, and good technique, but was also versatile enough to do more than just light urban contemporary ballads. Her stage shows included jazz, pre-rock pop, and even gospel, and Hathaway later appeared on Black Entertainment Television doing jazz and fusion. Lalah attended Chicago's Performing Arts High School then graduated to the famed Berklee School of Music in Boston. She was soon snatched up by Virgin Records and, upon strong urging from the record company, relocated to Los Angeles following the release of her eponymous debut album (with producers including Andre`Fischer, Angela Winbush and Chuckii Booker).
