California Students Stop Cal Grant Cuts

In a rare protest victory for students, a recent proposal to cut over 300 million dollars from the Cal Grants program was stopped after students and faculty protested. These cuts, which would have disproportionately hurt poor and minority students, have been warded off for now. Ana and John discuss the future ramifications. What do you think will happen next? What programs will be cut to make up for this California state budget deficit? Will students be targeted again, once this protest fervor dies down? Occupy Berkeley: 'Cops hit us with batons in stomachs'

Seven University of California students were arrested and dozens of others suffered bruises and abrasions following a police crackdown on an attempted encampment at a local plaza on Wednesday. "We had the tents set up for about a half an hour when the police decided they wanted to shut down the camp," student protester Eric Uribe recalled in an interview with RT. "What the students did is they set up a human wall around the tents. Soon after that, the police approached with full force in riot gear, with batons. We had no intention to move, but they jabbed some of us repeatedly in the stomach, pulling people onto the floor and arresting them." Hundreds of protesters had gathered at the town's Sproul Plaza to protest against tuition fee increases and public education funding cuts. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Occupy Cal: UC-Berkeley Students Rally for Public Education; Are Attacked by Riot Police

This week the Occupy movement drew thousands of California college students to protest on campuses across the state. The University of California system faces some of the steepest budget cuts and tuition hikes in the nation. Tuition and fees could increase by 81 percent over the next four years. This fall, students saw tuition hikes just a few weeks before their classes began. Community colleges and the California State University system face similar fee hikes. On Wednesday students held protests at least 10 campuses, including UC Irvine, UCLA and UC Berkeley, where police forcibly removed students and arrested 39 people. For more, we turn to a report by KPFA's John Hamilton. [Originally aired on Democracy Now!, 11/11/2011]

Where's the Funding?

Actions you can take: • Call members of Congress and ask them not to cut the Pell grant or TRIO programs • Sign the petition in support of Speaker John Pérez's Middle Class Scholarship Act: asmdc.org About the "Where's the Funding?" video project: In the Spring of 2012, the Associated Students of the University of California and imagiCal joined forces to produce the "Where's the Funding" video project with the goal of showing the public and our representatives the immense importance of public higher education. We believe that it is critical that our representatives hear the voices of the students and know that cutting higher education will have a very damaging effect on the future of this nation. The "Where's the Funding?" video project documents the experiences and sentiments of students at the University of California, Berkeley and then provides insight from Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich about why funding public higher education is so important in today's social and political climate.

University of California, Berkeley Racist Bake Sale

Here's the link www.youtube.com A Republican group at the University of California, Berkeley has cooked up controversy with a plan to hold an "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" as a way to oppose legislation that would allow public colleges to consider race in student admissions. (Sept. 26)test against an Affirmative Action-like bill awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown's signature, UC Berkeley College Republicans announced plans to host a satirical Increase Diversity Bake Sale, selling racially price-adjusted pastries on campus, SFGate reported. The bake sale is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10am. The announcement, posted on the group's Facebook page, advertised a pricing structure, ranging from $2 per pastry for white men to $.25 per pastry for Native Americans, with a $.25 price break for women. "Just like the CA Senate Bills 185 and 387 the phone bank supports, we will be considering race, gender, ethnicity, national/geographic origin and other relevant factors to ensure the equitable distribution of baked goods to our diverse student body," read the announcement. The post finished with a signoff: "Hope to see you all there! If you don't come, you're a racist!" In another post, the group explained that the bake sale is meant to be satirical. But many students were not amused. "I'm ashamed to know that I go to the same school with people who would say stuff like this," said student Skyler Hogan-Van Sickle in a Facebook. "I'm really trying to figure out how someone can be this ...

Law School Debt by the Numbers

April 18 (Bloomberg Law) -- Just how onerous is the debt load for law students? Consider the graduates of San Diego's California Western School of Law. They have an average of more than $153000 in loans, the biggest debt load of any law school in the nation, according to US News & World Report. That's enough to buy this 41-foot yacht, complete with hydraulic Jet Ski lift. Or stay on this private Caribbean island for more than 100 days. Or dine at an Outback Steakhouse every night for more than 16 years. Even if they stretch out the loans over 25 years, graduates could be spending as much as 20 percent of their gross income just to pay off the debt. While Cal Western tops the charts, it's hardly the only law school where graduates are saddled with massive debt. The average law student nationwide leaves school owing more than $100000. And there are far more law school graduates than available legal jobs. This decade, US law schools will produce four times as many new lawyers as there will be new lawyer jobs, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. So it's no wonder that the number of people taking the LSAT has dropped 24 percent over the last two years. Law school isn't the ticket to riches it once was. Berkeley Invents Chronozoom - Saekow

Based on an idea from a University of California, Berkeley, student, Roland Saekow, ChronoZoom - a zoomable timeline of timelines augmented with multimedia features -- is coming to life. UC Berkeley geology professor Walter Alvarez and his students have teamed up with Microsoft Research Connections engineers to make this web-based software possible. ChronoZoom is being designed to help visualize history and to assist researchers in viewing large amounts of data to find new historical connections. A beta version of ChronoZoom was released today (Wednesday, March 1, 2012) by Outercurve Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports open-source software. The idea arose in a UC Berkeley course about Big History taught by Alvarez, who first proposed that a comet or asteroid smashed into the Earth 65 million years ago and killed off the dinosaurs. Big History is a unified, interdisciplinary way of looking at and teaching the history of the cosmos, Earth, life and humanity: the history of everything. For full story: newscenter.berkeley.edu
