Santiago Calatrava is a renowned architect, structural engineer and artist. Recent projects such as the Athens 2004 Olympic sports complex, the Turning Torso in Malmo, and TGV station in Liège, have brought him international acclaim. The only architect to exhibit at both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he is presently designing the main transportation hub for Ground Zero in Manhattan, as well as the tallest building in the USA: the 160-story Chicago Spire Tower. Calatrava collaborated extensively on this monograph, which traces his career and places his architecture in the context of his art and engineering prowess. All of his works, from the suspended swimming pool at Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology to his latest, startling designs, are featured in this lavishly illustrated volume, along with watercolors created by the architect specifically for its fold-out pages.

The Burke Brise Soleil, the movable, wing-like sun screen comprised of 72 steel fins, rests on top of the glass-enclosed reception hall and is raised and lowered to control both temperature and light in the structure. This Brise Soleil is opened and closed three times each day. As a fine arts photographer, it was something I wanted to do for a few years. I finally produced it last Saturday August 12. Aside from its distinctive structural form, the tower is innovative in enclosing the circular platform of microwave dishes, replacing the normal clutter with a serene white arc. As a result the 136 m (446 ft) tower is located in the Olympic park, and represents an athlete holding the Olympic Flame. Imagery abounds. The overall form of the tower is based on a Calatrava sketch of a kneeling figure making an offering. The base on which the figure 'kneels' is covered in broken glazed tiles in recognition of Gaudi (though with more restrained colors). The orientation of the tower means that the shadow of the central needle on the circular platform acts as a (rather impractical) sundial. The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is one of three Santiago Calatrava-designed bridges being built over the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas (USA) as part of the Trinity River Project. Construction on the bridge began in spring 2007 with the steel being manufactured in an Italian steel factory often used by Calatrava to manufacture his designs. The factory made the steel for his Athens stadium. Upon completion, it will connect Spur 366 (Woodall Rodgers Freeway) in downtown to Singleton Boulevard in west Dallas. The cable-stayed bridge is to cost $93 million, its total length will be 1870 feet (570 m) with a main-span of 1197 feet (365 m), and an apex-height of 400 feet (122 m). Music is 'Habanera' from Bizet's CARMEN performed by Charlotte Church. As you watch the progression of photos, we go from daylight, to dusk, to night. There's a very special magic about this place at night, when the buildings seem even more vibrant, if that's possible, it's very spectacular during the day.
