This is part one of an "argument" between Tony and Mikiel in an impromptu performance. Tony Camilleri is one of the top singers in Malta. He's famous for the Maltese Folk songs (Ghana - pronounced aana - gh is silent) and gave us several immortal songs like for example, "Int Sabiha Malta taghna" (You are beautiful our Malta) which you can find on one of the mychoice channels. Mikiel Abela "il-Bambinu" was born at Zejtun in 1920. He died in 1991. He was the son of a farmer and spent several years looking after animals. He became a legend of Maltese folk music. In most cases, the singers will get together on stage and improvise the song on the spot. It's amazing how they can either "discuss" issues or "fight" together in a teasing way whle at the same time they rhyme the verses of the "Ghanja" - song. I have no info on who filmed this video. Joseph Vincent "Joe" Camilleri, (born 21 May 1948 in Malta) aka Jo Jo Zep or Joey Vincent, is a legendary Australian vocalist, songwriter and saxophonist. Camilleri has recorded as a solo artist and as a member of Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons and The Black Sorrows. Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons highest charting single was "Hit & Run" from June 1979, which peaked at #12; Jo Jo Zep's "Taxi Mary peaked at #11 in September 1982; and The Black Sorrows top single, "Chained to the Wheel", peaked at #9 in March 1989. Camilleri has also produced records for The Sports, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Paul Kelly & the Dots, The Black Sorrows, Renée Geyer and Ross Wilson. Australian music journalist, Ian McFarlane, described him as "one of the most genuinely talented figures in Australian music", and, as a member of Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Camilleri was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2007. Maltese Singers - Tony Camilleri, Tal-Laqam (Those with a nickname)
In Malta and Gozo, each town or village has some kind of nickname or is known for something from nice to silly. This song covers several town and villages which the singer mentions. He also speaks about the way certain words are pronounced in various villages. Malta is tiny but at times you find different dialects in certain villages that are only about 3 kms away from each other. He ends up his song by offering his apology if he offended anyone and if someone got offended, he simply doesn't care :)) We're showing photos of each village as they are mentioned in the song. It gives some nostalgic feeling to the Maltese abroad and the foreigners can have a glimpse of our villages. A general note: Malta has around 78 towns and villages. Population in each varies approx from 1000 to 25000. Only the Maltese can understand the lyrics but the others, who wished they were Maltese, will enjoy the beautiful music of this song based on Maltese folkloristic style music. We made this video in order to demonstrate how to take proper measurements when ordering custom made clothes. It was originally produced for Izzy's IZ Adaptable Clothing Collection, which caters to a seated clientele, but we quickly realized that this video would help anyone ordering custom clothing from a distance. ie. by phone, by mail order or by the internet. This video is the first in a series that shows some of the difficulties that people in wheelchairs encounter when getting dressed in the morning. Rajt ma rajtx - Smajt ma smajtx Imhabba f'Kemmuna It-Tieg tan-Neputija A medley of three Maltese songs sung by the popular singers Tony Camilleri (l-Ghannej) and Frank O'Neill accompanied by the great orchestra of Joe Brown. 1st song by Tony Camilleri is "Rajt ma rajtx; smajt ma smajtx" - (Saw but didn't see - heard but didn't hear). We find many crosses on columns around Malta. They were used as a meeting place. First song is about one of these crosses found near Birkirkara, Malta. It is said that in this neighborhook, a man had some serious arguments with another man and pulled out a knife and tried to kill him but the 2nd man ran away. The would be killer ran to try to find him but couldn't. He saw another man and asked him if he saw someone running. This guy told him he saw someone running into an alley. The angry man went in and killed that guy. So this cross which happened to be in that neighborhood was called "Rajt ma rajtx; smajt ma smajtx" - (Saw but didn't see - heard but didn't hear). This cross is about 300 years old. 2nd song by Frank O'Neill is "Imhabba f'Kemmuna" - Love in Comino. Comino is a tiny island between Malta and Gozo. 3rd song by Tony Camilleri is called "It-Tieg tan-Neputija" - The wedding of my niece, and the singer talks about the bride showing off her lace, drinking too much, jumping and finally circled by guests and asked to kiss the groom.
