This entire film was filmed on the island of Kauai over a 9 day period. The first 3 days were spent hiking the Napali coast, a 11 mile hike along the coast. We did this for 3 days. After this we spent 2 more days exploring the island. I did this with 8 other friends. After the 5 days were up with them, they all flew back to Oahu where everyone was living, and I stayed on the island on my own for 4 more days. I had a rental truck, that's how I got around. I didn't want to spend money on hotels though, so I slept in the truck, in a Walmart parking lot for the other 4 nights. A lot of cars get broken in on the island of Kauai, according to rumors, so that's why I would camp in the parking lots, so I was a lot more exposed if someone tried to break in where I was sleeping That way i wouldn't get robbed, raped, or murdered, ha. At night when I got done filming, I would go into the only Walmart on the island, where they also have a McDonald's, and I would bum off there wi-fi with my ipod touch, and plot my path for the next day, then I would head out before the break of dawn every morning, and I would get back after sunset to do it all over again. We spent 10 days on Vancouver. Most of that time was spent in one of my favorite places, Barkley Sound. It's an area with 150 islands in a 5 mile radius. We canoed from one island to the next, camping on them. On a technical side, it was all shot on the Canon 5D Mark II. Most of the shots were done with the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 L Series. A Nikon 50mm 1.8 adapter, and a Nikon 70-200 2.8 with Canon/Nikon lens adapter. The smooth shots were done with a glidecam 2000. She's also the head soccer coach at BYU Hawaii. We did all the filming on the island of Oahu, in Hawaii. On a technical side, it was all shot on the Canon 5D Mark II, and for two special shots we did those with the GoPro HD. I wanted to try and give people the "perspective" of the soccer ball, so what we did was we duck taped a GoPro HD camera to the soccer ball. I then hid behind a tree so I wasn't in the shot, and then Carolyn, the soccer girl in the video kicked the ball up as high as she could, that's how we got that shot. As far as lenses go, the only lens I used was a Canon 16-35mm 2.8 L Series lens. For the underwater shots with the ocean, I used a SPL housing specifically made for a Canon 5D Mark II. I usually film all my movies at 24fps, however with this one, I wanted to try something new/experiment with. So I filmed all the shots with Carolyn at 30fps. I then conformed them with cinematools to 24fps. By doing this it slowed down the clips just a little bit, so they are barely played in slowmotion. It gives it a slight "dream effect" because of this. With the <b>...</b>

Marika and I were on the Big Island of Hawaii for two weeks working. We traveled all over getting shots and this is sort of a "best of" montage! Magic Lantern with CBR at 3.0x was used for most of the shots. Some timelapses used the FPS override function at 4fps and several HDR shots at Exposures of ISO 100-1600 were used. This video highlights several clips we've made using our new High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. The cameras are configured so that they record different exposure values, eg, one camera is overexposed, the other underexposed. After the footage has been recorded, we use a variety of HDR processing tools to combine the video from the two cameras, yielding the clips you see above. HDR Video provides filmmakers with many exciting new opportunities. Not only can HDR video create interesting effects, it can also allow for even exposure where artificial lighting is unavailable or impractical. For example, when a subject is backlit, one camera could be set to properly expose the subject, the other the sky, resulting in video with perfect exposure throughout. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH-2 vs. Canon 5D Mark 2. Quick skin tones compared in high contrast dynamic range situation featuring off-color backlight. The scene is window-lit with custom white balances set on each camera off the neutral gray floor. Canon45mm TS-E and 90mm TS-E lenses used at f2.8. Due to the GH2's 2x crop factor, the Canon 45mm TS-E lens was used which matches perspective of the 90mm TS-E lens on the 5D. A simple Micro43 adapter was used to mount the canon lens on the GH2. Could be much brighter with ISO 25600, but at the time I record this I'm kinda afraid to use it because of the noises, but after I try it today, the ISO 25600 is actually so awesome, and the noise is more like film grain.. Should have use it on this video, but well ,, :)

In extremely low lighting, the lens that came in the 5D kit was not adequate. It is the EF 24-105mm f/4L USM. It has a maximum aperature (min fstop setting) or 4.0. In low light it produced a lot of noise. I have purchased another lens with an fstop of 1.4 It is the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. It does not have any of the wide angle or zoom feautures of the kit lens, but it is great for indoor portrait and low light situations.

We also made trips out to nearby Osaka, Nara, and Koyasan. Especially in the winter, the snow was beautiful in the Mount Koya cemetery world-heritage. On the technical side, we shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and Sony A65. The 5D was mounted on a Glidecam HD-2000 with the Nikon 24mm f/1.4G lens for the flying shots.
