www.learningdslrvideo.com Recently I had a lot of people request a comparison review between the T3i/600D and the Canon 60D. B&H was nice enough to send me both units so I can review them here. These two cameras have very similar features and price points so I can see why a lot of people want to know which one to buy. Lets talk about price first, the 60D is about $100 more than the T3i. I have been using them both for over a week and I have to tell you that in terms of image quality they are pretty much equal as you can see here. This one of the clouds does look different but in just the minute or so it took to mount the other camera to the tripod the clouds moved and changed a bit. These camera use the same sensors so it makes sense that they look almost identical. I used the same lens in this test as well as the exposure and picture style settings. www.learningdslrvideo.com I was excited when I got some boxes in the mail, the Nikon D5100 and the Canon T3i/600D. Both are very comparable entry level DSLR's. Both are about the same price. I know all I talk about on this site is Canon so I wanted to really give Nikon some air time now that is appears they are getting more serious about video on their DSLR's. I think it would be great to have a bunch of Nikon D5100 tutorials on this site. Both of the cameras are really close in cost and they both have features like 1080p video and flip out screens. The Nikon doesn't have all the frame rates that the Canon has but Nikon appears to have better low light performance. I was all set to spend a ton of time shooting with both and doing a really thorough review when I learned something shocking about the Nikon. You can't shoot video in a full manual exposure on the Nikon like you can with the Canon EOS cameras. (You sort of can watch this video) The non manual movie mode is kind of a deal breaker for me, but instead of boxing it back up and sending it back, I wanted to still run a few comparisons first. Tests: Low light Aliasing Rolling shutter Bottom line is if you are serious about getting started with an entry level DSLR for any type of video that is going to require some tweaking, get the Canon T3i over the Nikon D5100. There is really not to much to say about the camera other than it has upgraded a few features and kept the price the same as what the T2i is. That is a great thing that the camera is the same price for the new people who are going to purchase it. If you own a T2i or 60D I would not run out and upgrade or downgrade to this camera. A short video of shots on my soon to be remodeled upstairs. It was pretty low light and I had the ISO set to auto. There were a lot of grainy shots, so I used this as a test to see the different ways I could try and hide the grain in the video. I used Sony Vegas 10 pro. If it does, let me know in the comments! Wonton Soup Recipe - Canon T3i Video Test I shot this video with a Canon T3i. Since I am stil practicing, I figured why not film my wife cooking. She loves to cook, and as long as I am not in the way, then why not shoot it and post the recipes? (ha!) The scene uses two 1000 watt lights within the kitchen area -- but I am still trying to figure out how to use these lights best. It's hard because they're put on a stand and cannot be separated. I aimed them towards the ceiling to bounce them -- but still need practice to give off better lighting. One thing I learned is that my lens was not wide enough to shoot in the kitchen. Also, I wanted shallower depth of field -- but could only achieve 3.5 with kit lens -- so that kind of sucks. I tried to make this video a bit edgier than the other recipe vids you see on youtube with quick edits and jump cuts. Because in my opinion, recipe videos on youtube are waaaaaay too chatty and too damn long -- so I just wanted to show the basics and let people fill in the gaps. I managed to get my hands on a pre-release Canon 600D / Rebel T3i to take a quick look at the major difference between it and the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i. It seems there is only small changes apart from the articulating screen. I have been told there is a new redeveloped 18-55MM lens that will ship with this camera. I shall try my best to get my hands on it for a comparison with the old one. I also had an opportunity to play with the new 1100D. Video review to come in the future.
