RSA Animate - Crises of Capitalism

In this RSA Animate, renowned academic David Harvey asks if it is time to look beyond capitalism towards a new social order that would allow us to live within a system that really could be responsible, just, and humane? This is based on a lecture at the RSA (www.theRSA.org).

China's Capitalist Revolution Part 1/9

Sorry viewers! Because of copyrights complain, I'm forced to removed some Parts. But don't worry! Search around Youtube and you can find the full video. When Chairman Mao died in 1976, he left China in chaos and poverty. He was succeeded by Deng Xiaoping, who overturned Maoism and taught the Chinese to love capitalism, creating special investment zones for the West. But Deng's crash course in capitalism went wrong when inflation grew and workers lost jobs. By 1989, China faced disaster. Now, 20 years after the tragic events in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, this programme reveals an interpretation of the motives of the demonstrators that may well overturn the conventional view in the West. The demonstrators did not begin by demanding democracy. Corruption, inflation and the hardship caused by economic reforms drove students and workers to confront the government and the army. Students went on hunger strike, and troops killed more than 2000. Deng Xiaoping gave the order to fire, but his ideas prevailed. This film argues that Deng's capitalist revolution created today's China.

The Caring Capitalist - Brazil

July 2005 Some call it anarchic socialism, some cutting edge capitalism. At Brazilian manufacturer Semco, the workers have sacked the boss, and run the company themselves. At the lavish reception, one of two receptionists meet and greet the great and mighty. But no-one really ever knows which one it will be at any given time. "'We are not sure which one will be there, because they set their own schedule" explains IT worker boss Joao Neto. There are hammocks to help workers think in comfort, and departments can choose their own furniture. Even salaries are set by the employees themselves, and bosses are just as likely to tell you to ask for more money than less. But although it sounds like a workers dream, the rest of the department keeps an eagle eye on lazy employees: "There is peer pressure for bad behaviour. If you're here just to profit from other people's efforts, you're not wanted". The easy going atmosphere has paid dividends -- annual profits at Semco are up to US$ 160m these days, from $ 4m when owner Ricardo Semler took over 25 years ago. Now he has turned his attention to teaching -- without the teachers. Like Semco, pupils at Lumiar primary school in Sao Paulo dictate the rules. Vive La Revolucion? Sweden's March Towards Capitalism: Economist Andreas Bergh on the "Capitalist Welfare State"

In The Capitalist Welfare State, Lund University economist Andreas Bergh explains how Sweden has managed to increase economic productivity despite its large public sector. Bergh says that despite popular mythology, Sweden is not a socialist success story but instead owes its economic growth to the lowered tax rates and deregulation of the early 1990s, which allowed innovation and investment to flourish. Bergh also discusses how Sweden's national voucher program revitalized the country's educational system and warns that Americans who are hoping to emulate Swedish success by growing the public sector are learning the wrong lessons from Sweden. Produced by Ted Balaker and Daniel B. Klein; filmed by Jonathan Liberman and Henrik Devell; edited by Zach Weissmueller; with special thanks to Niclas Berggren, Martin Borgs, Nils Karlson, and the Ratio Institute . Approximately 10 minutes long. Go to reason.tv for downloadable iPod, HD, and audio versions. Jerry Harris: Globalization of Capitalism

Jerry Harris, Devry professor, author of The Dialectics of Globalization, explains the growing globalization of transnational capitalism replacing national sovereignty, at the Brecht Forum, November 14, 2008 Co-sponsor: Science & Society The Political Economy of Globalization US Hegemony or Transnational Capital? Jerry Harris Is globalization a project of US imperialism or an emerging transnational capitalist class? Harris will argue that while nationalism still plays a strong role in world affairs, particularly in the form of the US military/industrial complex, economic hegemony is now in the hands of transnational capital. The central historical process at work is the conflict between a descending form of capitalist accumulation based on national markets and the nation state and an ascending model of accumulation based on the transnationalization of finance and production. The contradiction between nationalism and globalization cuts across traditional party lines as the capitalist class struggles to develop a political project that can manage their growing crisis. Jerry Harris is a professor of history at DeVry University, Chicago and author of The Dialectics of Globalization, Political and Economic Conflict in a Transnational World. He is national secretary of the Global Studies Association and his articles are often featured in Science & Society, Race and Class and Das Argument. Hollywood Hates Capitalism - Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Edition

Oliver Stone's uber-villain Gordon Gekko is back in the new film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which (surprise!) features greedy capitalists behaving badly. It might remind you of Avatar, Mission Impossible 2 or roughly a zillion other films in which capitalists destroy the environment, concoct killer viruses, harvest organs, and cover up murder in order to feed their lust of profit. Even when capitalism isn't the primary target, the representatives of commerce are often flat-out repulsive (think Jabba the Hutt). Perhaps it's ironic that Hollywood filmmakers practice what they preach against. Sure he palls around with socialist dictators Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, but there's no doubt Oliver Stone hopes to rake in obscene profits with his new flick. Approximately 1.35 minutes. Capitalism, Socialism, and the Jews

Why have the Jewish people, who seem to have benefited greatly from capitalism, contributed disproportionately to socialist literature? Although the question remains unanswered, Dr. Milton Friedman, a secular Jew himself, offers some fascinating observations. Global Capitalism - Jan 2012 (1of2) - Professor Richard D Wolff

Global Capitalism: A Monthly Update and Discussion (Jan 2012) (1of2) Basic prospects for the US economy in 2012 opened this month's update. Most attention focused on analyzing the two main problems now shaking European capitalism: (1) the financial and social costs and implications of European governments' debts and austerity programs aimed to alleviate those debts, and (2) conflicts over Greece's debts and default scenarios. Emphasis was placed on the impact of Europe's crises on the US economy in 2012. These Tuesday evenings will each begin with an update and analysis of major economic events of the last month and their contexts of longer-term economic trends shaping politics and society here and abroad. We will focus on the evolving global capitalist economic crisis and its consequences. We will examine topics such as - the social costs effects of the historic long-term US unemployment, - national debt crises and "austerity programs" in Greece, Ireland, Spain, and beyond - changes in today's Chinese economy and their global effects, - tax reform and the entire tax issue in the US today, - continuing crisis in the US housing and credit markets - the economics of immigration Actual economic developments will shape the agenda for each monthly Tuesday meeting. Rick Wolff, with occasional guests, will present an economic update and an analysis of some particular economic topics and then open the floor to questions, comments and a general discussion of where the US and world ...

Capitalism -- what is it good for?

Speakers: Professor Sanjaya Baru; Phillip Blond; Professor Frank Furedi; Paul Ormerod Chair: Dolan Cummings Following the sub-prime crisis, the credit crunch and the collapse of investment banking, events which have rocked the Western world over the past year, the boast that capitalism can deliver prosperity for all seems less than convincing. Margaret Thatcher's famous claim that 'There is no alternative' (TINA), seemed triumphalist in its day, and accurately described the exhaustion of any left-wing challenge to the market, but it also suggested a lack of a credible moral case for capitalism. This lack is all the more glaring in the context of mounting economic problems. Even before recent dramatic events, there seems to have been a growing cultural dissatisfaction with the market, not simply confined to fringe anti-capitalist protests, but discernable in mainstream politics and even business, which defensively insists on its 'corporate social responsibility'. It has become fashionable to renounce both corporate greed and consumerism, and there are regular demands for governments to intervene and regulate the market to contain its worst excesses. Conspicuous consumption is accused of destroying the planet, wiping out indigenous cultures and corroding deeper moral values. Some critics argue capitalism actually makes us ill because of its relentless focus on acquiring ever more stuff, and suggest that individual happiness, rather than GDP, should be the measure of a ...

The Capitalist-Communist Connection

Excerpt from a 1980 interview with Professor Antony C. Sutton, highlighting the capitalist-communist connection. From Sutton's book 'Wall Street and the Bolshevik Revolution' (1974): While monopoly control of industries was once the objective of JP Morgan and JD Rockefeller, by the late nineteenth century the inner sanctums of Wall Street understood that the most efficient way to gain an unchallenged monopoly was to "go political" and make society go to work for the monopolists -- under the name of the public good and the public interest. This strategy was detailed in 1906 by Frederick C. Howe in his Confessions of a Monopolist. [1] Howe, by the way, is also a figure in the story of the Bolshevik Revolution. Therefore, an alternative conceptual packaging of political ideas and politico-economic systems would be that of ranking the degree of individual freedom versus the degree of centralized political control. Under such an ordering the corporate welfare state and socialism are at the same end of the spectrum. Hence we see that attempts at monopoly control of society can have different labels while owning common features.

Artist: Five Finger Death Punch Song: Remember Everything Album: American Capitalist Genre: Heavy Metal Release Date: October 11, 2011 Label: © 2011 Prospect Park Lyrics: Dear mother, I love you I'm sorry, I wasn't good enough Dear Father, forgive me Cause in your eyes, I just never added up In my heart I know I failed you, but you left me here alone [Chorus] If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain? Cause I remember everything. If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets? Cause I remember everything. But dear brother, just don't hate me For never standing by you, or being by your side Dear sister, please don't blame me I only did, what I thought was truly right It's a long and lonely road, when you know you walk alone [Chorus] If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain? Cause I remember everything. If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets? Cause I remember everything. I feel like running away I'm still so far from home You say I'll never change but what the fuck do you know? I'll burn it all to the ground, before I let you run Please forgive me, I can't forgive you now. [Chorus] If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain? Cause I remember everything. If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets? Cause I remember everything. It all went by so fast; I still can't change the past I always will remember, everything If we could start again, would that change the end? We remember everything. "Copyright ...
