Caracas, The Informal City 1/6 (9.33 of 50 min)

The first in depth documentary to tell the inside story of the new informal urban developments, this groundbreaking film explores our changing world -- the great debate over globalization, architecture and the future of our society. "This is not a mountain full of houses, it is a house as big as a mountain." In Caracas, the most dangerous megacity on the South-American continent, petrol is cheaper than water, yet the rich spend billions of dollars on private security only to end up behind their own barbed wire fences. Over the last decennia, like a magnet gone mad, Venezuela's capital has drawn in millions of migrants. Now more than four out of its six million inhabitants live in self build constructions in the informal conditions of the barrios where only the laws of the strong rule. Caracas: The Informal City is a portrait of a city that is rapidly becoming the prototype for the exploding urbanization witnessed on especially the African and South-American continents. Here a completely new socio-political and architectonic reality has been developing. Shot in the Spring of 2007 on location in the barrios of Caracas, the slums where Comandante Chavez has his powerbase, the film provides a unique perspective on the practice of the informal city. Caracas based architects Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner, founders of the Urban Think Tank. Billo's Caracas Boys - Mosaico No. 2

Classic from Venezuela's most popular big band of all time. Dominican born "Billo" Frometa was the Tommy Dorsey of Venezuela and the Caribbean, leading a top rated tropical/latin style big band for 50 years. Here's an example of his early 1960's work in a concept borrowed from Dorsey's "Memory Medleys". Billo created his own version and called it a "Mosaico". This is his second Mosaico and like the Memory Medley, it features classic tunes that were hits years back but still popular with the audience. Billo never had girl singers however. He employed different featured male singers according to the type of song. Slow "Bolero" or "Tango" style tunes would be sang by Felipe Pirela and later Jose Luis Rodriguez. The fast, swinging numbers were sang by Cheo Garcia, one of the finest "guaracheros" that ever walked the planet. Billo himself would arrange and/or direct the orchestra. In his later years, he did not regularly play his instrument (the saxophone), but simply directed on stage. Billo's had been working with his orchestra since 1939, so by this time he had perfected his particular brand of latin swing. And he certainly had a knack for top quality musicians and singers, discovering many future superstars. Enjoy!

BILLO'S CARACAS BOYS en Barranquilla 2009

BILLO'S CARACAS BOYS en Barranquilla 2009. Concierto en el Hotel el Prado, Sabado 21 de Febrero 2009. Luis María Frómeta was born in Pimentel, Provincia Duarte,Republica Dominicana, on November 15, 1915; he would move with his family to San Francisco de Macorís some years later. The school he attended there had compulsory music lessons, so he learned much of his musical training there. Frómeta and his orchestra arrived in Venezuela in December 1937 with his orchestra to play regularly in a dance club in a Caracas, the Roof Garden. The Santo Domingo Jazz Band did well, but the club owners didn't think the name would stick- so they had Frómeta change it to something more marketeable. Frómeta went along, which got him barred from ever returning to his native Dominican Republic as Trujillo considered the change- "Billo's Caracas Boys"- an insult. Frómeta would continue to play in Venezuela until the fall of Marcos Pérez Jiménez in 1958. Accused of being a supporter of the regime, he was barred by the Asociación Musical de DF y Estado Miranda from ever playing in Venezuela again. Following this, he moved to Cuba to play with a Cuban band there. In 1960, a special session of the National Assembly was convened in Caracas. The purpose was to lift the ban passed on Billo in 1958, which was by then considered to have been unfair. That very same year, Frómeta returned to Venezuela. Last years On April 27, 1988, he suffered a stroke while rehearsing with the Venezuela Symphony ...
