Filmed for Live and Loud on MTV on 18 May 1997 after Nick Cave had been nominated for the best 1996 male artist and refused the honor (see his letter to MTV on www.nick-cave.com). The songs performed were: Into My Arms, Brompton Oratory, West Country Girl, Far From Me, and The Carny. Sorry for the mess up in the middle of the clip, it's how it was on my copy. The Carny is one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever, full of savage beauty and an intensity that only Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds can bring ... Carny- A documentary film by Alison Murray
Directed by Alison Murray, this documantary is a look at the Carnival as both pop culture and sub-culture of Americana. Carny captures the colorful images of the midway at county fairs but also goes behind the bright lights and whirling twirling rides into the elusive world of the carnival worker. Accompanying the images are tender and raunchy interviews with the carnival workers. The carnival emerges as its own living, breathing entity, which can be a transient creator of nostalgic romance for the towns in which it sets up the temporary midway of rides and games, or providing a place of refuge and escape for both those who follow its lead and those who eagerly await its arrival. This is a unique view of a seemingly ageless American pastime.

Having sawdust in the blood is a carny compliment, but blood in the sawdust is another story. In 1936, during The Great Depression, a traveling sideshow sets up shop to mystify yet another dustbowl town with freaks and illusions. When a sinister force begins taking the carnies' lives one-by-one, Detective Ellison (Reggie Bannister) is put on the case. Is it the cryptic carnival owner, Helen (Denise Gosset)? What about the strong man, Virgil (Chris Staviski)? Or how about Ratty, the snake handler (Doug Jones) and his friend William, the sword swallower Step right up folks, step right up.
