Handel Messiah: Comfort ye & Every Valley Richard Croft

Well, it was only a matter of time before Handel's Messiah was staged as a dramatic piece. From a telecast of such a thing come the opening number Comfort ye my People and Evev'ry Valley sung by American tenor Richard Croft. Please, spare us your superior intellect with comments like "This is ugly.' or "how stupid is this?" We have eyes and are able to recognize the stupidity and futility of this undertaking. How about discussing the performance instead? Richard Croft is one of the US's best tenors and has been performing this well for well over 30 years.

Vivaldi~ Beatus Vir: Beatus vir qui timet Dominum RV 597

Vivaldi's church music features prominently in concerto programmes today; his two best-known choral works, a Beatus vir and a vibrant setting of the Gloria, were more complex and altogether on a larger scale than anything he wrote for the girls of the Pieta. Each is virtually half an hour in duration. The setting of Beatus vir ('Blessed is the man') is the most elaborate of the two: composed for double orchestra and choir it is a wonderfully uplifting work, as ebullient as anything he ever wrote for the opera house. Mozart Requiem Mass in D Minor VII - Domine, Jesu Christe

John Eliot Gardiner conducts the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. This performance was filmed at the Palau de la Musica Catalana, Barcelona in Dec. 1991. A Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic tradition is a service designed to pray for the souls of the departed. The parts of the liturgy that are meant to be sung are what constitute all Requiem Mass compositions, including Mozart's. The structure is as follows: 1. Introit 2. Kyrie 3. Sequence: a. Dies irae b. Tuba mirum c. Rex tremendae d. Recordare e. Confutatis f. Lacrimosa 4. Offertory: a. Domine Jesu Christe b. Hostias 5. Sanctus 6. Benedictus 7. Agnus Dei 8. Lux Aeterna Mozart died before finishing the Requiem Mass, and his wife Constanze gave the task of finishing the work to a pupil of Mozart's named Süssmayr. From the Sanctus onward, the Requiem is the creation of Süssmayr, though he did use portions of the Introit and Kyrie for the Lux Aeterna, as requested by Mozart and as per tradition. Despite, or maybe partially because of, the controversy surrounding this Requiem Mass, it is widely regarded as Mozart's greatest masterpiece. Latin Lyrics and English translation follow:

For high quality: www.youtube.com Vivaldi: Juditha Triumphans devicta Holofernes barbarie, RV 644 - Pars Altera - Armatae, face et anguibus Performed by: Modo Antiquo and Coro da Camera Italiano Vagaus: Nicky Kennedy Directed by: Frederico Maria Sardelli Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbarie translated as Judith triumphant over the barbarians of Holofernes, Vivaldi catalogue number RV 644, is an oratorio by Antonio Vivaldi, the only survivor of the four that he is known to have composed. The libretto was written by Iacopo Cassetti, based upon the Biblical Book of Judith. The Assyrian king Nebuchadrezzar sends an army against Israel to demand overdue tributes. Under the leadership of the general Holofernes, the Assyrians lay siege to the town of Bethulia and are about to conquer it. The young Jewish widow Judith goes to him to implore mercy. He falls in love with her and she indulges him. After a rich banquet and having drunk much wine, Holofernes falls asleep. Judith beheads him, flees the enemy camp, and returns victorious to Bethulia. All characters, male and female, were interpreted by the girls of the Ospedale. They are: Juditha, contralto, a young Bethulian widow. Vagaus, soprano, eunuch, Holofernes's squire. Holofernes, contralto, Assyrian general. Abra, soprano, Juditha's handmaid. Ozias, contralto, high priest of Bethulia.

Handel, GF - Handel Festival, Halle: 50th Anniversary of the Handel Festival - Part 1

Baroque Composers Documentaries Playlist: www.youtube.com The Handel Festival- Halle: a short piece on the 50th Anniversary of the Handel Festival: Part 1. THF is an international music festival in Central Germany, at authentic venues in the city of George Frideric Handel's birth. The Handel Festival has been held in Halle since 1922. It all began with new productions of Handel's operas and these still form the backbone of the festival programme of today. The Handel Festival Orchestra Halle first distinguished itself as a Braoque ensemble performing on period instruments for the very special task of accompanying Handel operas in Halle in 1993. The Handel Festival stands for tradition both in the performance of Handel's works, as well as for innovation and crossover. It consistently offers its international audience new pieces, rediscoveries and a variety of interpretation styles, most of them in historical Handel venues, such as the cathedral, the Marktkirche, Handel House, or the historical Goethe-Theater in nearby Bad Lauchstädt. The central and starting point of the Festival is the birthplace of our Baroque Master. Since 1948 the city's music museum is accommodated in the house with it's Handel exhibition, the regional music history exhibition and the collection of music instruments. Furthermore, on the occasion of current musical issues, an amplitude of special exhibitions, concerts and events takes place. The Handel House moreover harbours the office of the ...

Preview: Vivaldi - Juditha Triumphans
