Felicidades, a march by Jesús Bañuelos, is considered one of the "hymns" of Mexico's Tierra Caliente del Balsas. Here we hear violinist Juan Reynoso, his son Neyo and Cástulo Benitez playing it at the 2000 Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. The piece is traditionally played at the start of most any performance by a traditional group, whether the event be a wedding, party, christening or anniversary. It would be followed by El Gusto Federál, so if you'd like you can go to any of several performances of that piece posted here at YouTube and hear a slice of the musical life of Tierra Caliente. Harpist, bandleader and composer Juan Bartolo Tavira composed this son Calentano, one of the few sones with words in a primarily instrumental genre. It's entitled La Tortolita, the name of a small bird from Mexico's Tierra Caliente del Balsas, where Michoacán and Guerrero meet. Here violinist Juan Reynoso and his long-time friend Cástulo Benitez sing and play. For much more of the music of Mr. Reynoso, please visit www.SwingCatEnterprises.com for Finale transcriptions, arrangements, CDs and DVDs.

El Tecolotito is the little owl of Mexico's Tierra Caliente del Balsas. Here violinist Juan Reynoso, his son Neyo and Cástulo Benitez play at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in 1999. Note the terrific series of adornos that Juan plays between each vocal verse. This is not improvisation, per se, but a brilliant sequencing on the spot of pre-composed adornos, from which there are hundreds to choose. For more, visit www.SwingCatEnterprises.com. Violinist Juan Reynoso, accompanied by Cástulo Benitez, plays an old waltz entitled Corazón Roto. It was 1999, and the performance took place in Juan's home in Riva Palacio, Michoacán. I studied three hours a day, seven days a week, with Juan, then visited other violinists to study with them as well. Everything was recorded, and I'm now collating my thousands of hours of recordings, pairing them with transcriptions. Dueña de mi Alma, or "Owner of my Soul" is a pasodoble from Mexico's Tierra Caliente del Balsas, where Guerrero and Michoacán states meet. I believe that it was composed by bandleader José Corona, from Huetamo, Michoacán. According to the violinist we hear here, Juan Reynoso, José was a bandleader who "wore his belt very tight." He was known to enforce discipline with a stick. Be that as it may, he wrote some terrific pieces. We hear Juan's son Neyo and Cástulo Benitez backing him on guitars. The performance is from the 2000 Festival of American Fiddle Tunes.
