Here is an inexpensive way to entertain and exercise your felines. Outdoor cats would explore, sniff, examine, and poke around in holes and places for food all day. Treat boxes are a great way to give mental and physical exercise to indoor cats. Cut holes slightly bigger then the paw in any box and add yummy treats. For less food motivated cats, try this on an empty stomach, and use super yummy treats. Place a few treats right on the edge of the holes to help them along. Later, you can even substitute some of their normal dry kibble instead, or feed entire meals from the box. You can use canisters, egg cartons, yogurt containers, or tennis ball tubes. Our crew eats a raw diet, so for treats I take cooked chicken chopped into teeny pieces, dry it out in the oven (lowest temp setting for an hour or two, oven door cracked), and those are the treats they usually get in the boxes. I have also used bonita flakes (messy), and freeze dried chicken liver. If your cats are watching their weight, be sure to reduce meal sizes according to number of treats/dry food used. Use caution when cutting into containers, and always supervise the cats during use.
