One of the great rants by Christopher Hitchens was when he participated in a debate in England put on by the Intelligence Squared organization in October 2009. The subject being debated was: The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world. His opponents were a Catholic bishop from Africa (Archbishop John Onaiyekan) and Catholic MP Ann Widdecombe. Supporting him was Stephen Fry. In fact, this rant has been called his best ever on the subject of the Catholic Church. CATHOLIC CHURCH -- The Vatican Secret Archives The Vatican Secret Archives (Latin: Archivum Secretum Vaticanum), located in Vatican City, are the central repository for all of the acts promulgated by the Holy See. They house the Church's and humanity's collective memory since the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ to the present. The Pope, having primal incumbency until death, owns the archives until the next appointed Papal successor. The archives also contain the state papers, correspondence, papal account books, and many other important historical documents accumulated by the Church over the centuries. In the 17th century, under the orders of Pope Paul V, the Secret Archives were separated from the Vatican Library, where scholars had some very limited access to them, and remained absolutely closed to outsiders until 1881, when Pope Leo XIII opened them to researchers, of whom now more than a thousand examine its documents each year. The Vatican Secret Archives have been estimated to contain 52 miles (84 km) of shelving, and there are 35000 volumes in the selective catalogue alone. Anti-Jesuitism played an important part in the Kulturkampf, culminating in the Jesuit Law of 1872, endorsed by Otto von Bismarck which required Jesuits to dissolve their houses in Germany, forbade members from exercising most of their religious functions, and allowed the authorities to deny residency to individual members of the order. The Lenten season begins Wednesday, which can mean only one thing here in Lancaster County. It's time to eat a fasnacht or two. For the 89th year in a row, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia will be baking more than 7000 dozen fasnachts during the Lenten season. It is one of their biggest fundraisers of the year. Tuesday is Fasnacht Day. Tradition holds that on the day before Ash Wednesday, it is good luck to eat the yeast-raised potato pastry. Many cultures have different ways of celebrating Shrove Tuesday.
