Malcolm X Rare Canadian CBC TV Show 1965 Part 1

He was revered. He was despised. Some saw him as a guardian of civil rights, a force of empowerment and self-respect for blacks in America. Others branded him a provocateur, a racial supremacist and a menace. His words, incisive and unforgiving had the capacity to unite -- and divide. A split from the Nation of Islam eventually tempered his tone as seen by this appearance on CBC's Front Page Challenge Jan. 5, 1965. Did you know? - Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Neb., he eventually dropped his surname and replaced it with X, symbolizing the rejection of his "slave name." He said he chose "X" because, "To take one's 'X' is to take on a certain mystery, a certain possibility of power in the eyes of one's peers and one's enemies...The 'X' announced what you had been and what you had become: ex-smoker, ex-drinker, ex-Christian, ex-slave."

CBC TV - Take 30 (Program) - McLuhan predicts 'world connectivity' 1965

The Story: We waste too much time racing from home to office, says Marshall McLuhan, an English professor at the University of Toronto who's becoming known internationally for his study on the effects of media. Society's obsession with files and folders forces office workers to make the daily commute from the suburbs to downtown. McLuhan says the stockbroker is the smart one. He learned some time ago that most business may be conducted from anywhere if done by phone. McLuhan's prescient knowledge: In the future, people will no longer only gather in classrooms to learn but will also be moved by "electronic circuitry." Did You Know?: • McLuhan's prediction of a world connected by electronic circuits came true in 1995 when people around the globe began using the Internet, a secret computer network developed by the US Defense Department in the 1970s. A report about the resurgence of McLuhan's ideas with the advent of the Web may be seen in Clip 10. • After completing a Masters of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba (1934) and a literature degree at Cambridge University (1936), McLuhan was unable to find work at a Canadian university. He left for the United States in 1936, accepting a position at the University of Wisconsin and a year later moved to the University of St. Louis. • In 1939 McLuhan started his MA at Cambridge and by 1943 he completed his PhD in literature. • McLuhan originally considered studying engineering but decided against it when he excelled in ...

CBC TV - Explorations (Program) - The World is a global village 1960

The Story: The book is no longer "king," says Marshall McLuhan, a professor at the University of Toronto's St. Michael's College. McLuhan studies the effects of mass media on behaviour and thought. In this CBC report on the teenager, he discusses how our youth facilitate the global shift from print to electronic media. Television has transformed the world into an interconnected tribe he calls a "global village." There's an earthquake and no matter where we live, we all get the message. And today's teenager, the future villager, who feels especially at home with our new gadgets — the telephone, the television — will bring our tribe even closer together. Did You Know?: • At the time of this interview McLuhan was working on The Gutenberg Galaxy, in which the idiom "global village" first appeared. It was his most prominent book next to Understanding Media (1964). • McLuhan warned that the future global village would be wrought with violence. He figured the electronic process would force people to "re-tribalize," placing excessive stress on individuals and traditional identities. • He wrote a draft of The Gutenberg Galaxy in less than a month and the book was published shortly after in 1962. It examines the effects of the printing press on thought and space. McLuhan maintained it lessened the need for manuscripts, put monks and scribes out of work and developed a correct spelling usage. • His first book, The Mechanical Bride , published in 1951, maintained that advertisers ...

Bill Reiter - CBC TV Profile 1988 - 'Pacific Report: Having A Riot'

Marleen Trotter and the CBC British Columbia crew did this very much appreciated profile of BR in 1988 when he was forty-five years old. One of the profile's hi-lites is a not often seen 1985 clip from the late-nite Johnny Carson show. Johnny shows his appreciative audience that year's International Broadcasting Award television finalist spots. Also seen (briefly) are the elusive master sound engineer Dick Abbott (at the Little Mountain Sound - Umbertino's session) and Dr. Bundolo's Pandemonium Medicine Show Producer Don Kowalchuk. 'Donko' herds the cast and crew of CBC radio's 'Chez Gattuso' for the Peter Gzowski show. 'Beachcombers' was sold to a phenomenal number of countries and translated into numerous tongues. Along with this episode called "Cliff Hanger", Bill appeared as a principal performer in three other episodes of the long-running series. Bill Reiter and Robert Clothier also performed together in many CBC radio dramas during the 1970's and 80's - often under the direction of the well-known Dr. Bundolo Producer Don Kowalchuk.

Vancouver Hockey Riot (CBC TV Coverage) June 15, 2011

Here's a 14-minute chunk of CBC-TV coverage of the post-Stanley Cup hockey riot in Vancouver, BC (Canada) on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The previous 1994 Vancouver Canucks hockey riot notwithstanding, the footage reminds this Seattleite of the 1999 WTO riots in Seattle. That's probably because many of the re-creations of those riots for the 2007 Hollywood film "Battle in Seattle" (en.wikipedia.org were ACTUALLY FILMED IN VANCOUVER IN SOME OF THE SAME PLACES WHERE THE HOCKEY HOOLIGANS RIOTED!!!! Sigh. It's only a game. Right? TECHNICAL NOTE: This video was shot with a handheld Kodak zi8 camera as I sat aghast in front of the TV.
