How an in-dash 6-CD changer works...
My 2007 Nissan Versa's 6 disc changer's mechanism locked up, causing a "mechanism error" message to display on-screen. After dis-assembly, I determined the cause to be lack of lubrication in the transport mechanism. Here is a video showing exactly how this style of CD changer works. The concept is simple; split the stack to allow the spindle motor and laser to play a disc within the stack. Each disc is locked onto a thin steel vertical-rail mounted platform. When a disc is injected or ejected, the entire stack is collapsed (spindle arm retracted) and repositioned to allow the selected platform (1-6) to line up with the load slot. If this doesn't make sense, watch my video! After I made this video, I re-lubricated the entire transport mechanism with white lithium grease, and it works better than new! Good thing, too... these units sell new for over $500, and used prices are still too much!
GNU/Linux CD-changer (second life of a Bull printer)
This video shows the prototype of a GNU/Linux controlled CD changer, whose main goal was to burn standard operating system installation CDs (Debian GNU/Linux ) for the Swiss distributor debian.ch (closed down in 2007). The system was a PC-486/32 MB with an ISA SCSI board, and three SCSI writers and a reader, with a small parallel port board with a Lattice (thanks Julien) doing some register decoding, and three power controllers (for the three motors: rotation, up/down and grip). The motors where from an old Bull printer and a 5.25 floppy disk. The software was written in Perl This was used from from 2001 to 2003 in the production of about 600 CD-Rs.

For this CD player, the problem turned out to be a broken belt between the motor and the wheel that has the gear that opens the drawer. I replaced the belt with a rubber band. This robot was developed by the Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL) at the University of Maryland. The robot was constructed using only Lego pieces and is controlled by Lego Mindstorms NXT brick. The code controlling the NXT was developed using the standard NXT development software. The code controlling the CD Drive (open/close) and copying the data was developed using Java. I did not want to spend $2000 for some robot thingie putting empty disks one after the other in the drive and removing burned ones. So I dig out my good old fischertechnik (sort of LEGO-technik before LEGO thought of that) and build this contraption. Reminds me also of some sort of Rube Goldberg machine but I did not have more pieces to make it more "interesting" to look at.
