Seconds From Disaster - S01E07 - Meltdown In Chernobyl

The Chernobyl disaster was a well-known nuclear accident of catastrophic proportions that occurred on 26 April 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, part of the Soviet Union). It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and is the only level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale. The disaster occurred on 26 April 1986, 1:23 AM, at reactor number four at the Chernobyl plant, near the town of Pripyat, during an unauthorized systems test. A sudden power output surge took place, and when an attempt was made at an emergency shutdown, a more extreme spike in power output occurred which led to the rupture of a reactor vessel as well as a series of explosions. This event exposed the graphite moderator components of the reactor to air and they ignited; the resulting fire sent a plume of radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive area, including Pripyat. The plume drifted over large parts of the western Soviet Union, and much of Europe. As of December 2000, 350400 people had been evacuated and resettled from the most severely contaminated areas of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. According to official post-Soviet data, up to 70% of the fallout landed in Belarus.

Chernobyl's Radioactive Wolves

There have been massive increases in large carnivores in the nuclear wasteland around Chernobyl creating a complete ecosystem and one of Europe's largest wildlife sanctuaries -- and yet it's radioactive. Where humans can't live, nature is rebounding and somewhere in this vast nuclear wilderness, there are packs of radioactive wolves, living in an archaic structure that has vanished from other parts of Europe. Here they can thrive, here they can live like real wolves in large packs as they used to. Before 1986, the zone was heavily farmed and populated, and wolves were scarce. In less than 25 years there are an estimated 300+ wolves making the most of this deceptively beautiful landscape. But are these they mutants? Have they been affected by nuclear contamination after the 1986 explosion which released 100 times more radio-nuclides than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined?

Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster - Surviving Disaster (BBC Documentary series) - Part 1

The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster from the BBC documentary series, Surviving Disaster. This episode follows the accident as told by Valeri Legasov (played by Adrian Edmondson, in one of his more serious roles), the Russian scientist who was a key member of the Soviet government commission formed to investigate the causes of the catastrophe and to plan the mitigation of its consequences. This is quite a chilling tale of events. Some of the documentary was filmed on location in the abandoned town of Pripyat and inside one of the remaining 3 (now closed) nuclear reactors located at Chernobyl.

25 years have passed since the Chernobyl disaster, but people still remember the tragedy, especially those who lived in the nearby city of Pripyat. The town was not immediately evacuated after the incident, and the general population of the Soviet Union was not informed of the disaster until a few days later. The evacuation began at 14:00 on April 27. To speed things up, residents were told to only take the bare necessities, as the authorities said it would only last about three days. As a result, most of the residents left behind their personal belongings, which are still there to this day. RT's correspondent Aleksey Yaroshevsky has visited the ghost town. Inside Chernobyl

a video clip of inside the exploded reactor. Thanks to hboy007 for his translation which reads as follows: inside the Sarcophagus the radiation levels are as high as 3400 Roentgen per hour [1 R = 2.58 * 10^-4 C/kg]. The working time of the engineers is determined by the radioactivity they are exposed to. When the dosimeter each of them carries starts to beep alarmingly, they need to leave the reactor immediately. Sergeij K. who recorded this footage usually stays a little longer. The white dots that can bee seen on the pictures that look like snow are also caused by the radiation which the digital cameras are quite prone to. The clock in this control room stopped at the exact time the incident took place: 1:23 am, april 26th, 1986 Despite the strongly limited time, work is done without hurry to avoid mistakes. The mounting teams know exactly where the other ones interrupted their repairing right there. Inside the exploded reactor block, additional staircases were installed to reach most of the locations but this isn't possible. Totally, only one third of the entire reactor block has been explored. The sectors have names and numbers which the workers shout out to one another. Every now and then men can be heard wading through water. Rain and melting water are the biggest enemy of the Sarcophagus. These caused gradual decay during the past 20 years. Sergeij likes to compare the inside of the Sarcophagus to a mine field. Each step can decide upon what radiation dose one is ...

Japan's Chernobyl? Radiation pressure fears at Fukushima plant

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com Japan is dealing with the aftermath of a massive tsunami. The official number killed is now 375. That's a figure which even the most optimistic estimates suggest will rise dramatically. The huge wave was caused by the biggest earthquake in the country's history. Japan has now asked the UN to send rescue teams to help deal with the disaster. Another earthquake has also hit central Japan in the past hours, although there are no reports of damage from this latest aftershock. An emergency situation has been declared at the Fukushima nuclear plant in the north east, after it was damaged. The pressure inside the reactor is rising, raising fears of a radiation leak. But Japan's nuclear safety agency says to reduce the pressure, radioactive vapor may be released, posing no risk to humans or the environment.

Chernobyl & Pripyat 2007

We've noticed that people don't have any idea what (or where) we're talking about when we mention that we recently traveled to Chernobyl & Pripyat. Pripyat is a completely modern abandoned city about 2km from Chernobyl, inside of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, in Ukraine. Over 20 years ago (26 April, 1986), there was an accident in one of the nuclear reactors there that became one of the worst technological disasters in history. We got some really fantastic footage of both cities as well as the reactor. When we put the film together, we thought it would be helpful to include some information about what happened. Here's the final product. This footage of Chernobyl and Pripyat was filmed on August 7, 2007 by Jason Strain. Narration is by Laura Corliss. Music by Brokenkites. Japanese government is considering the construction of a containment shell at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant. It would be aimed at averting further radiation leaks in a crisis that is still described as 'grave'. The plan would involve the three most badly damaged reactors being covered with hi-tech material. The level of radiation measured in sea water near the site, is now said to be around three and a half thousand times higher than normal. Workers have been unsuccessfully trying to restore the cooling system at the facility, in what is now the worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl. This episode won an Emmy. It covers the sarcophagus built to contain the remains of the destroyed reactor and the work of the Russian scientists, staff and soldiers who risked and continue to risk their lives in the clean-up operation. "This file was digitised from a VHS recording of the program. The picture quality is fair, however, the sound track has some occasional static, especially towards the beginning. I think this is the 1996 updated version of the original 1991 program and includes an extra 10 minutes of interviews with several of the original scientists. It is shorter than the 60 minutes described on the BBC website and may have been edited."

In remote villages of the Ukraine, contaminated food is part of daily life. There is no choice. After the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the Ukrainian government regularly monitored the food and soil of the affected areas, this monitoring discontinued in 2009. In 2011, Greenpeace visited the Ukraine to carry out independent research. In one village alone, the Caesium-137 content of milk was 1.2-16.3 times above the allowed limit for children.

Chernobyl Disaster

On April 26, 1986, Reactor #4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the town of Pripyat, Ukraine exploded. The explosion took place around midnight while the neighboring town of Pripyat slept. 4 workers were killed instantly. Four days later, the residents of Pripyat were ordered to evacuate. The residents never returned and the town still remains uninhabited to this day. In 2003, the United Nations Development Programme launched a project called the Chernobyl Recovery and Development Programme (CRDP) for the recovery of the affected areas. The program launched its activities based on the Human Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident report recommendations and was initiated in February 2002. The main goal of the CRDPs activities is supporting the Government of Ukraine to mitigate long-term social, economic and ecological consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, among others. CRDP works in the four most Chernobyl-affected areas in Ukraine: Kyivska, Zhytomyrska, Chernihivska and Rivnenska. The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. It is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history and the only level 7 instance on the International Nuclear Event Scale. It resulted in a severe release of radioactivity into the environment following a massive power excursion which destroyed the reactor. Japan has upgraded the severity rating at the paralyzed Fukushima nuclear plant to seven, a level only ever previously assigned to the Chernobyl disaster. Officials say it's been raised, because high radiation has been recorded in the air, ocean and tap water. But Japan's nuclear safety agency is still reluctant to compare the dangers to what happened at Chernobyl, saying the radiation leak is still smaller.
