Chicago Navy Pier (Part 3), Illinois, USA

www.nomadicsamuel.com Navy Pier is a 3300-foot (1010 m) long pier on the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. It is located in the Streeterville neighborhood of the Near North Side community area. The pier was built in 1916 at a cost of $4.5 million, equivalent to $90.5 million today. It was a part of the Plan of Chicago developed by architect and city planner Daniel Burnham and his associates. As Municipal Pier #2 (Municipal Pier #1 was never built), Navy Pier was planned and built to serve as a mixed-purpose piece of public infrastructure. Its primary purpose was as a cargo facility for lake freighters, and warehouses were built up and down the pier. However, the pier was also designed to provide docking space for passenger excursion steamers, and in the pre-air conditioning era parts of the pier, especially its outermost tip, were designed to serve as cool places for public gathering and entertainment. The pier even had its own streetcar. Today, Navy Pier is Chicago's number one tourist attraction.[2] Navy Pier attractions include sightseeing tours from companies such as Seadog I, II, IV, and Extreme, Shoreline Sightseeing cruises and Water Taxi service, and the Tall Ship Windy. There are also dinner cruises by Entertainment Cruises, on their ships the Spirit of Chicago, The Odyssey II, and the Mystic Blue. Other attractions include rides like the Ferris Wheel along with many seasonal festivals for Halloween and Christmas. The pier has fireworks on Wednesday and ...

With Illinois Jobs Now!, we can fund important projects that will help revitalize our economy while laying a foundation for future growth. Brookfield Zoo opened in 1934, and much of the infrastructure dates back to the same era. The repairs and upgrades will create more than 370 construction jobs. It will also help the zoo prevent layoffs, exhibit closures and the elimination of award-winning conservation education programs. Chinatown Los Angeles

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Chinatown Los Angeles in this episode of "California Travel Tips." When you think of Chinatown, colorful paper lanterns, delightful dim sum and fierce Chinese dragons may come to mind. The truth is, Chinatown Los Angeles has all of that and more. Established in 1938, LA's New Chinatown along Broadway and Hill streets, makes a fun and exotic day trip. Chinatown history dates back to 1852, when the Chinese arrived in Los Angeles. Located on the site of Union Station, Old Chinatown fell into disrepair during the mid 1910s, and it was demolished. Today, Chinatown LA is home to more than 15000 Asian residents, who live, play and worship here every day. The Taoist temple on Yale Street is one of the largest and the most beautiful in Southern California. Here, worshippers pray to the goddess of the seas, lighting incense and offering up fruit and vegetables, which are used to feed the poor. During Chinese New Year, oranges are offered at this temple's altar for good luck and fortune. The celebration continues with crackling fireworks and a festive Chinese New Year parade with colorful dragons, flags and dancers along North Broadway. The event draws more than 50000 spectators a year. One of the best things about Chinatown in LA is the performances by the Shaolin monks from the Henan province of China. These incredibly talented kung fu masters perform the first and third Sunday of each month in Central ...

NO JUSTICE, NO SWEETS.wmv

Three hundred seventy five young adults from around the world paid between $3000 and $6000 to come to the US for three months to work, learn English and experience this country's culture. What they experienced instead was crass exploitation of their labor. What they learned was how to fight back - with a sit-in and strike. The students from Turkey, China, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Romania, Mongolia, Moldova, Poland and Ghana signed up for the J-1 visa program expecting to work at hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions for a couple of summer months, followed by the chance to tour the US - a fun way to travel and gain cultural experiences while also earning money to help subsidize their trips. They were instead forced to lift 50-pound boxes of Reese's candies, Kit-Kats and Almond Joys from a fast-moving production line, one every minute for eight hours a day, in the graveyard shift for many of them. The students, many from medical and engineering graduate schools, were paid $7.85 - 8.35 an hour and had to live in crowded company housing (two, four or more to a room) for which they were each charged $395 a month - twice the rate for previous workers. After rent and other fees were deducted from their paychecks, guest workers took home as little as $40, too little to pay back their sponsor fees and travel costs. Fight back is Sweet On August 17, the student workers staged the first sit-in against the Hershey Company since 1937. With the help of the National Guestworker ...
