The corners and bodyside lines are a little more creased; the trim and sparse chrome bits a little more defined. The saw-tooth grille insert is reminiscent of machined industrial equipment. Jeweled taillamps and HID headlights complete the high-tech theme. One thing hasnt changed, thoughthat oversized, tri-pointed star on the grille is still suitable for Flava-Flavs accessory drawer. Under the skin, the M has grown up, too. Engine choices are mostly new or updated, from the bread-and-butter V6 ML350 to the tested ML500, with prices increasing concurrent to horsepower. Weve driven the 268-horse ML350 model (at around $39000 to start), and found it to be smooth if not exactly powerful. Zero-to-sixty acceleration is claimed to be an utterly adequate 8.4 seconds. In other words, its entirely sufficient for the soccer mom stereotype that we often see behind the wheel of these machines. And then theres that V8. The heart of the $48500 ML500, weve enjoyed this same motor in a number of Benzesand even in this second-heaviest of applications (the new R-Class non-minivan is just a smidge stouter), its a beaut. For roughly 40 nights a year, a small patch of blacktop in Downtown Los Angeles becomes the most sought after real estate in Southern California. It's a parking lot across the street from the Staples Center, home of the LA Lakers NBA team, and unless you're a season ticket holder or Kobe Bryant's mother you're not getting in. Or so we thought. We drive by to get a look before the game. There's a half million dollars' worth of cars in the front row alone, and a stone-faced attendant at the gate. Under normal circumstances we would have kept right on going, but we're driving a 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur sedan so we try our luck and turn in. The attendant takes one look at the car, smiles and waves us through the gate like he was expecting us. Test drive of a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 8 with a SUPERCHARGED 6.1 Hemi V8 producing 575 Horsepower from Chicago Cars Direct. Without question, the Jeep is the hottest rod here. Although the two have fairly similar power-to-weight ratios (11.4 pounds per horsepower for the Jeep, 12.3 for the Chevy), the Jeep easily outruns the SS. This thing explodes when you jump on the gas. The four-wheel-drive system routes the majority of the engine's power to the rear wheels while cruising, and a clutch in the center differential can reroute power to the front wheels if the system detects that the rears are losing traction. Hit the gas, and after a barely audible chirp from the rear tires, the Jeep hurtles forward. From rest to 60 mph takes only 4.5 seconds, which is about as quick as a BMW M3 and a second quicker than the SS. The Jeep passes 100 mph in 12.0 seconds, 2.6 seconds sooner than the Chevy. Part of the Jeep's acceleration advantage comes from the quick-shifting transmission. It has a manumatic feature that allows manual gear selection, but the automatic mode worked so well that we mostly relied on it. Upshifts and downshifts are quick and much smoother than the Chevy's. As a smack-you-into-the-seat machine, the Jeep's got a definite edge. It also handles fairly well. We're talking about a 4794-pound sport-ute with a decidedly unsportingly high center of gravity, but it's crisper in the curves than you'd think. As in: "G'day, sport, can I get you a beer?" But as used in the acronym SUV, the term doesn't usually apply that well. Most SUVs are just not that sporty, are they? However, in the case of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, there's an argument to be made for the accuracy of the addendum. First, just in case you're as confused as we were, let's explain that the Range Rover Sport is a shortened and sharpened Land Rover LR3, brought to market to compete with sportier SUVs such as Porsche's Cayenne and BMW's X5. In the course of reinventing this Sport model from the LR3 platform, the transformation resulted in a vehicle that's about two inches shorter than the LR3 and offers much less interior room. Maximum cargo capacity for the Sport is 71 cubic feet compared with 90 for the LR3, and rear-seat space drops from 55 cubic feet to 49. Despite the smaller size, Land Rover managed to add weight. Our tester pounded the road at a porky 5866 pounds, whereas the last LR3 we tested weighed 5686 pounds. That could lead some to believe that this would be a slow and clumsy vehicle, but that's not the case. With its generous mass balanced very nearly evenly on the two axles, the Range Rover Sport conducts itself with remarkable poise.
