Is Pat Thai spelt ผัดไท or ผัดไทย? We seem to receive a different answer from every Thai we ask. Type in either on of these two spellings in your regular search engine and you will come back with an equal amount of hits online. The night market stand here spelt it with the ย on the end--ผัดไทย--which makes us chuckle: wonder if there is a ผัดลาว (Pat Lao) or a ผัดอเมริกัน (Pat American) out there some where???? Either way, If the Thais are not consistent on this point, why they hell should a foreign national be? Well, anyway, the yummy foodstuff we Occidentals romanize as "Pat Thai" is just that: supremely delish! This video is from the night market in downtown Chanthaburi, this open-air stall amidst a spattering of other like establishments. For you über observant watchers out there, you will notice that the noddle the cook uses in this video is actually what the Thais call wóon-sâyn วุ้นเ้ส้น. We ended up getting the Pat Thai though, mainly because we think it is more filling than the wóon-sâyn noodle. The whole dish, including condiments and a tin cup of chilled ice water, came out to 30฿ (so about one dollar US)--not bad for an evening meal. --These videos are all part of the new guidebook we are putting together here at Other Places Publishing for Thailand.
