US vs China: Who rules the roost?

As the gathering of the Pacific Rim's political and economic heavyweights winds down in Hawaii, it's the latest rift between the globe's two centres of financial influence which is dominating. The US has been criticising China for its trade and currency practices. This year the US and China continued to outline competing economic programs. Hu Jintao insisted on more influence for Beijing as a growing power, while Obama zeroed in on China's trading decisions. RT's Oksana Boyko explains the differences that have piled up between the two. Follow us on twitter.com and www.facebook.com Rescue workers began a clear-up operation on Sunday in Hangzhou, eastern China, a day after two high-speed trains collided, killing at least 35 people and injuring 191 others, state media reported. On Saturday, the bullet train crashed into another high-speed train that had stalled after being struck by lightning, causing four carriages to fall off a viaduct. It was the first derailment on China's high-speed rail network since the country launched bullet trains in 2007 with a top speed of 155 miles (250 kilometres) per hour.

This is China

China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is the source of such major inventions as what the British scholar and biochemist Joseph Needham called the "four great inventions of Ancient China": paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. Historically China's cultural sphere has been very influential in East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing system being adopted, to varying degrees, by its neighbors Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. ======== Beijingboy1985's E-mail: hsiaowei.sun@gmail.com

Gordon Chang: The Reasons For China's Imminent Bust

This podcast was presented on November 18, 2011 The global dominant narrative about China is wrong, claims Gordon Chang. Don't expect it to be the 'pocketbook of last resort' that will rescue world markets from their current malaise. And don't expect its remarkable economic growth to continue. In fact, expect a "hard landing" for China - and soon. Forbes.com columnist and international lawyer Gordon Chang has spent much of his time since the early 1980s working and living in China. His primary knowledge of the country and his relationships there give him a superior understanding to how its economy is actually faring. And what he sees today doesn't inspire confidence. We are seeing the first real signs of slowdown in China's economic growth looking at the year-over-year numbers for the past several months. Car sales have decreased nearly 5% since last year, and property values are beginning to plummet in key markets (30% in October alone in Shanghai). Gordon sees these as the inevitable harbingers of a coming collapse in China due to excessive stimulus policies the government undertook starting in 2009. The bubbles and malinvestment created by this stimulus have not been addressed, and increasing weakness and transitions inside the political system are making it less likely they will be before market forces intervene.

China's Capitalist Revolution - BBC (6.2009)

www.bbc.co.uk ProducerRobert Coldstream Executive ProducerNick Fraser. Aired: June 20, 2009, July 25, 2009 When Chairman Mao died in 1976, he left China in chaos and poverty. He was succeeded by Deng Xiaoping, who overturned Maoism and taught the Chinese to love capitalism, creating special investment zones for the West. But Deng's crash course in capitalism went wrong when inflation grew and workers lost jobs. By 1989, China faced disaster. Now, 20 years after the tragic events in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, this programme reveals an interpretation of the motives of the demonstrators that may well overturn the conventional view in the West. The demonstrators did not begin by demanding democracy. Corruption, inflation and the hardship caused by economic reforms drove students and workers to confront the government and the army. Students went on hunger strike, and troops killed more than 2000. Deng Xiaoping gave the order to fire, but his ideas prevailed. This film argues that Deng's capitalist revolution created today's China.

Bob Hope brought Mickhail Baryshnikov to China to teach a class at the Peking Ballet School. Needless to say, he was a hit... Working with Mickhail Baryshnikov in China was a privilege and a thrill. He's a very nice guy and here's an interesting story for you from THE LAUGH MAKERS... Longing for a little more adventure, one afternoon Don, Gig and I slipped away from our guide for a couple of hours. In a narrow alley about a mile from the hotel, we discovered a small antique shop, obviously not intended for tourists. The musty interior was piled high with artifacts from estate-sales — rugs, furniture, household utensils, silverware, paintings, photos, lamps, vases, family stamps called chops made of marble or ivory and decorated with dragons, lions, monkeys and other characters from China's ancient mythology. More items made of ivory — chopsticks, statuary, and finely-carved jewelry. Up a narrow flight of stairs was the clothing — kimonos, men's suits, jackets, caps, sandals, shoes — all in a pile that said it hadn't been disturbed in years. Hanging on one wall of the dimly lit mezzanine, almost unnoticed, were old costumes retired from the Peking Opera — multicolored capes, pantaloons, garments weighted down with gold embroidery. Here was a treasure trove that foreigners weren't supposed to find! We felt like Sydney Greenstreet stumbling upon the Maltese Falcon. We made a few purchases and headed back to the hotel. That night over dinner, we mentioned our find to Mikhail ...

Winner of China's Got Talent Final 2010 - Armless Pianist Liu Wei Performed You Are Beautiful

Lost his arms from an accident at age 10, Liu Wei from Beijing never gives up living strong. He managed to do everything with his feet and started to learn to play piano at age 19. His dream is to become a musician. He just turned 23 and he won the China's Got Talent Show on Oct. 10, 2010. In the final, he played piano and sang the song "You Are Beautiful", perhaps his vocal is not the best render of this song, but the power and inspiration of his zest for life won him the final. Bravo! Liu Wei's motto is,"I have two options - I can die as fast as possible, or I can live a brilliant life. And I chose the latter." Congrats to Liu Wei! Liu Wei's quotes: "To me, there are 3 things can not be missed in life - air, water and music." "There are only 2 paths in my life for me - either to die as fast as possible, or to live as brilliant a life as I could." "I don't feel that I am that different from other people. Normally everyone is used to do everything with one's hands so your hands are more flexible. There is no rule saying that you can't do things with your feet." "A man should be responsible to his dreams. My dream is to become a great musician." "I know if I want to do it better than other people, I have to put in more efforts" On the note he wrote on the paper in this clip, it says'" Walk on, at least I have a pair of perfect legs." His mother said in the clip,"Sometimes his legs would cramp, he couldn't put any strength on them. He has worked harder than normal people."

Since being unearthed in 1974, experts have attempted to resolve an enduring enigma about one of archaeology's greatest finds. Now, with the help of 21st century technology, the once mighty army with its life size warriors rises from the dust of two millennia. The Terracotta Army (literally "soldier and horse funerary statues") or the "Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses", is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The figures, dating from 210 BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province, near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor.
