"Mooncake Mania" on Chinese Holiday

ANCHOR: As Chinese around the globe celebrated the Moon Festival this weekend, many found themselves swept up in the search for the perfect mooncake. STORY: For Chinese people around the world it's that time of year again... Every year as the Chinese Moon Festival approaches, from Hong Kong to Shanghai to London--Chinese people around the world are buying boxes of sweet bean paste pastries as gifts for family and friends. They're called mooncakes. And, like the holiday fruitcake in Western culture, the mooncake in Chinese culture is more important for its symbolism and tradition than for its taste. In fact, many of these cakes are said to go uneaten. But that may be changing. As Chinese tastes become more "global," there is an ever-greater variety of mooncake flavors on the market. It's no longer just limited to the traditional lotus seed paste or red bean paste. Now mooncake enthusiasts can enjoy dainty custard-filled cakes, or delicate white sugar powder confections. Flavors like green tea and even shark's fin have come into fashion. And jumping on the trendy mooncake band wagon, ice cream giant Häagen Dazs has created a line of high-end, ice cream-filled mooncakes for those really seeking to make an impression. In these "cakes," the traditional preserved duck egg yolk is replaced by a sphere of mango sorbet. Some mooncake purists are, of course, crying foul--commenting that these days anything round can be called a mooncake. But the cornucopia of new mooncake flavors <b>...</b>

Chinese Muslims Celebrate Eid in Beijing

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com Following the fasting month of Ramadan, Chinese Muslims are celebrating with food the Eid holiday. They've gathered at Beijing's Islamic icon, the Niujie Mosque. On Wednesday, about 5000 Chinese Muslims flocked to the Niujie Mosque in Beijing to celebrate the Eid festival. Their prayers lasted from morning to noon, under tight security and close supervision by Beijing police. Eid marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, where believers abstain from food during the day. [Wei Chunjie, Deputy Director, Niujie Mosque Administration]: "For the month prior to today, we couldn't eat or drink during daylight hours, to experience hunger and suffering, to experience what it's like for the poor to feel hungry, and to know how fortunate our lives are. So today we get to celebrate and get together to pray and give thanks to Allah. So we are very glad," Streets surrounding the mosque are lined with stalls with snacks and delicacies. The Muslim worshipers were mostly of the Hui ethnic group, with some of the Uighur ethnic group. The Chinese Regime has a history of deadly ethnic clashes with Muslim Uighurs in the Xinjiang region. One Beijing resident expresses his disapproval of violence against Muslim believers around the world. Santa's Workshop - Inside China's Slave Labour Toy Factories

Sometimes we have no choice, we work till dawn. When you work all night you become dizzy and your eyes hurt because you can't take any breaks. SANTA'S WORKSHOP takes you to the real world of China's toy factories. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages, and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment. Low labor costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment. The European (and American) buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade?

Learn Chinese: Lesson 2 - Introduction to Tones

Like many Asian languages, Chinese is a tonal language. This means that a word can have various meanings depending on the tone used to pronounce it. There are four tones in Mandarin Chinese which are represented by the four tone marks over the vowels in pinyin. Before you go any further with your learning, Dani gives you a lesson dedicated to understanding and using the tones. It is possible to relate the concept of tones to how you use the tone of your voice in speaking English. For example the tone of your voice will often change when asking a question or giving an order in English! Be sure to try the free exercises for this lesson on our website www.graspchinese.com

Here'll you learn how to grab a taxi and ask the taxi driver to take you to your hotel. You'll also get a chance to learn the remaining pronouns in Mandarin Chinese. You'll learn some more useful verbs such as to go and to arrive. Many taxi drivers in Beijing and China do not speak much English, if any! The best approach is to print out or ask someone to write down the name of your hotel or wherever else you want to go. You should get in the habit of picking up a card from your hotel reception. Luckily in most large hotels in China, breakfast is served as a buffet of both Chinese and Western dishes. So you can usually just pick whatever you'd like without knowing how to say it in Chinese. You will usually order coffee or tea from the waitress. However, it is always useful to know how to order breakfast in Chinese, and you are keen for Dani to teach you as you both enjoy breakfast! Learn Chinese: Lesson 7 - Numbers 1 to 10

Now is a good time to recap the numbers you already know and learn the remaining numbers from one to ten in Mandarin Chinese. This will also enable you to tell the time of day, and arrange to meet someone at a given time. Numbers in Chinese follow a simple and regular system. Once you master numbers 1 to 10, you will be ready to pick up higher numbers very easily. Numbers are a core part of the Chinese outlook on life, and here Dani pauses to explain the attributes of the different numbers. For instance, you will find out why the number 4 is considered unlucky, and the number 8 is considered lucky! Be sure to try the free exercises for this lesson on our website www.graspchinese.com

China Travel Must-see!!! Surviving the Masses in Beijing

People, people everywhere! This is part two of our 2010 China experience. Unwittingly, we began our China trip on one of the busiest Chinese public holidays, the May Labour Day Golden Week. We came to Beijing for the scenic and historic sights but ended up seeing more people than scenery, multitude of tourists and locals. Overall, it was a wonderful and rewarding trip. We return home with lots and lots of pictures, plenty of fond memories and 'life changing' experiences. Just to name a few: Walking for an hour along the jammed highway to reach the Great Wall, and back the same way after dark to the coach; Losing one of the tour members in the crowd inside the forbidden city; Not able to get out of the jam-packed subway train at our stop; Fight for a taxi with five hundred other people; Ordered our food but cannot find a table to sit down; A dozen people looking over my shoulder while I eat my food, ready to grab my seat as soon as they think I am done; and best of all, long line-ups to the toilets only to find out they are all overflowed. Beijing welcomes you!
