WadoRyu Kata: Chinto

Masahiro Maruyama, Wado Ryu Renmei member This video was shot at the JKF 38th Tokyo Karate Athlete Championships 2008. Maruyama place best 16 out of 93 in the High School Boy's Kata division. First 2 rounds he won with this Chinto. Third he lost with Wanshu - see that kata video on KenzenJapan. Maruyama did win 1st place in the 4th Grade Boy's Kata (10yrs old), All-Japan National Elementary Championships 2001! His winning kata was Wanshu, the first time I've seen a Wado kata listed as the winning kata in an open JKF tournament, let alone a JKF Nationals!

Practical Kata Bunkai: Chinto / Gankaku End Spin

www.iainabernethy.co.uk Here is a clip taken from my Bunkai-Jutsu 5 DVD which covers Chinto / Gankaku kata. This particular clip shows the application for the end spin. The preceding motions clear a path for a grip that allows an elbow to the face to be delivered. The enemy's head is then pulled to the side to gain better control before cranking the neck and simultaneously driving the knee into the enemy's inner thigh. The strong follow through (as shown by the spin in the kata) will knock the enemy's leg to one side and cause their body to fall against the neck crank; making this a very dangerous technique. Great care must be taken in practise and, as is explained on the video, the technique needs to be adapted for safety when drilling with a partner. If you are not familiar with this method you should not be practising it unless under the supervision of a suitably qualified and experienced instructor. I hope you enjoy the clip and I'll be back with more soon! All the best, Iain

Chinto Kata | Isshinryu Karate | Steve Miller

*NOTE* [to negative opinions on this kata] I have two different executions when performing my kata; based on whether I'm in the dojo or in competition. In the dojo I do kata in the more strict traditional manner and in competition I do kata as a performance - utilizing more speed and enthusiasm. I believe it's important to stand out from the rest. My instructor taught me to live the kata; not just go through the motions like most karate-ka. Stances are bleh.

We are not instructing you, or encouraging you to do or to believe anything, except to view, enjoy, and think. Never forget that martial arts, like any rigorous course of physical activity, presents the risk of injury, sometimes serious, disabling, or even fatal. Actual techniques should only be practiced in a controlled environment emphasizing safety, under the direct supervision of a Black Belt instructor (in whom you have trust and confidence), and only after you have been cleared by your personal physician. In 1966, Master Tatsuo Shimabuku returned to the United States. It was his second visit, and was particularly notable for his time spent at Master Steve Armstrong's dojo in Tacoma, where films were taken of Shimabuku performing the Isshinryu Kata, as well as demonstrating warm up routines, and self defense. As an aside, I have spent years photographing and videotaping martial artists. Invariably, when I show a film or a photo, someone will criticize the effort, arguing "it could have been done better." "Tell me something I don't know," is the usual response. What I do know is getting the right people to the right place with the right equipment under the right circumstances at the right cost with the right amount of time available, is what it's all about. Of those six essential requirements, we usually end up achieving two. That's known as the discipline of ...

One Minute Bunkai: Chinto (Kyan) #1

One Minute Bunkai: Chinto (Kyan) #1. This series of techniques is a perfect example of Karate's transitions from mid-range to close-quarter range and then followup into throwing. It works perfectly as advertised. But I did not make this up, this was done generations ago, it worked for them then it works now too. Just follow the unwritten rule that it is always best to hit-stun-incapacite-take the fight out of- your opponent before you engage in grappling if at all possible, it just makes life so much easier for Tori (defender). As always, add an eye poke here, a knee there, any chance you get, enhance it if flows naturally. I alway teach it and do it for you always need to have a plus element to add into the mix.

CHINTO KATA- Nesodden, Nov 23 2010: SUPER POWER - Stephen Chan Special

Absolutely my favourite KATA. After taking Gold with it in the Zambia Karate Nationals in 1984, Silver in 1985 (after Paolo Piccinini, my former protégé and later superlative training partner, now in Italy) I graced the Zambian competition Karate scene with it till 1987/ 88. I've always associated this Kata with strong emotions and joy, plus passion for life. It is for me a happy Kata; a Kata of class and beauty. I've done many enlightening reflections on things while training and performing it. I felt it would be an appropriate Kata to perform then while comforting Arne (Yellow Belt man receiving brotherly hug at start and end of video) after a bereavement in the family. Last week I performed Passai Sho Kata for his son, Stian (8 yrs old), because the latter had asked me to perform a senior Black Belt Kata he had never seen before. I dedicate the video to my teacher of many years, Stephen Chan, 9 Dan: www.stephen-chan.com

One Minute Bunkai: Chinto (Kyan) #2

One Minute Bunkai: Chinto (Kyan) #2 is a super effective application for moves 1 and 2 of this Kata, it flows perfectly. Move #2 here is a very different application than what you see in most books and videos. It is extremely dynamic and combines a throw from a locked wrist with a simultaneous and devastation elbow to the chest/ribs, neck or face causing the opponent to fly around your body into the lock/throw. The first time I ever saw this bunkai was from the book "Isshinryu Chinto Kata: Secrets Revealed" by the brilliant pioneer of bunkai Mr. Javier Martinez (I highly recommend it). This bunkai is truly a "hidden" treasure that is not seen until someone points it out to you. This is the perfect example of why we must all look deeply into kata to reveal that which is buried under layers of simplistic and unrealistic explanations that do not represent the move's true intent.
